NOTES TO "ABRACADABRA" BY PETER SCHOENAUER
ABRACADABRA, a magical formula used by the Gnostics of the 2nd century to involve the aid of benevolent spirits to ward off disease and affliction. It is supposed to be derived from, or similar in origin to, abraxas, a word highly significant of the Supreme Power, which was engraved on gem and amulets or was variously worn as a protective charm. Handed down through the Middle Ages, the Abracadabra gradually lost occult significance and its meaning was extended to cover any hocus-pocus. The artist Peter Schoenauer carries to an artistic level with the meaning of good luck in the arts. IN BLUE, IN RED, IN YELLOW, IN GREEN, IN PURPLE The German painter Paul Klee (1879 - 1940) said "The painter should look first into his paint box - before starting..." James Rosenquist, Pop-Artist of the sixties said "The first and foremost, the painter should think..." I have done both. The art in these works is going back to the basics, dividing the spectrum, creating a kaleidoscope in using basic colors contrasting each other.
