Elusive Quality (USA) (Gone West), the sire of Trelawney Stud’s Champion two-year-old Elusive City (USA), notched up his 19th individual stakes winner this weekend.
In his first start at stakes level, four-year-old Courageous King (USA) (Elusive Quality) equaled the course record at California’s Del Mar. Courageous King settled in behind the leaders in the Green Flash Handicap (1000m) and out-sprinted his rivals in the run home stopping the clock in 55.11 seconds.
Other stakes winners sired by Elusive Quality in 2005 include Girl Warrior (USA) and Elusive Diva (USA).
Elusive City became his sire’s first Group One winner in only his third start when taking out the prestigious Prix Morny (1200m) as a two-year-old. Also the winner of his first two starts – the Lingfield EBF Maiden Stakes and the Group Two Richmond Stakes – Elusive City was subsequently disqualified due to a swab irregularity.
Recently returning for his second season at stud in New Zealand, Elusive City’s first foal arrived at Auckland’s Haunui Farm last week – a bay filly from the Thunder Gulch (USA) (Gulch)mare Shades Of Silk (AUS) who is a daughter of Champion two-year-old and multiple Group One-winner Lycra (NZ) (Tights) and is a half sister to Group Three-winner The Man (AUS) (Dehere).

New born foals will become the “norm” in the Southern Hemisphere over the next few months as the breeding season gets into full swing.
There’s nothing more exciting than the arrival of first season foals however, and Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) is now officially off the mark with his first arriving at Haunui Farm on Friday morning. “It’s great to have Elusive City’s first foal on the ground,” said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud. “It’s always an exciting time waiting for the arrival of a stallion’s first crop and we are looking forward to seeing many more of his progeny hitting the ground over the next few months,” he said.
Elusive City’s first foal is a filly and comes from the Thunder Gulch (USA) (Gulch)mare Shades Of Silk (AUS) who is a daughter of Champion two-year-old and multiple Group One-winner Lycra (NZ) (Tights) and is a half sister to Group Three-winner The Man (AUS) (Dehere). “She’s a bay filly, she is very well-muscled, structurally correct and has a very bold outlook,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “It’s a very good effort for the mare’s first foal and bodes well for Elusive City,” he said.
Elusive City, along with his counterpart Van Nistelrooy (USA) (Storm Cat) are now at their southern hemisphere base, Trelawney Stud. Both stallions will be present at the upcoming Stallion Expo to be held at Karaka on the 28th of August and, they will also be part of the Waikato Stallion Parade the following weekend – September 3rd and 4th. “Both stallions have arrived in great condition,” said Taylor “and we’re looking forward to the breeding season ahead,” he said.
In contrast to Elusive City, Van Nistelrooy’s first crop of foals are now yearlings and will be among the stars of the yearling sales series in 2006.
