Yearling Sales Just Around the Corner
At
this time of year, many businesses are beginning to wind down as the
Christmas season approaches. Stud farms throughout Australasia
however, are still in full swing as the breeding season finishes and
the yearling sales series' are about to begin.
This year, Haunui Farm will
offer more than fifty yearlings in sales rings throughout
New
Zealand and
Australia
The first of theses being colts by
Tale of the Cat (USA)(Storm Cat) and Van Nistelrooy
(USA)(Storm Cat) who will head to the Gold Coast in a couple of
weeks where they will join the draft of Kitchwin Hills to be sold at
the Magic Millions Sale.
With yearlings by proven sires Zabeel (NZ)(Sir
Tristram), Redoute's Choice (Aus)(Danehill), Red Ransom
(USA)(Roberto), Volksraad (GB) (Green Desert), Elusive
Quality (USA) (Gone West), Danzero (Aus) (Danehill),
Danehill Dancer (Ire) (Danehill),
Tale of the Cat, Pentire
(GB) (Be My Guest), Cape Cross (Ire) (Green Desert),
Stravinsky (USA) (Nureyev), Faltaat (USA) (Mr
Prospector), O'Reilly (NZ) Last
Tycoon), Centaine (Aus)
(Century), Carnegie (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), Kaapstad
(NZ) (Sir Tristram),
Helissio (Fr) (Fairy King), Danske (NZ) (Danehill),
Deputy Governor (USA) (Master Willie) and Danasinga
(Aus) (Danehill), exciting young sires Montjeu (Ire)
(Sadler's Wells), Howbaddouwantit (USA) (Rahy), Bertolini
(USA) (Danzig), Black Minnaloushe (USA) (Storm Cat),
Galileo (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), Traditionally (USA)
(Mr Prospector) and Fantastic Light (USA) (Rahy) and first
season sires Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel), Van Nistelrooy
and Golan (Ire) (Spectrum), there is a yearling to meet
all budgets and tastes.
Our Karaka draft features yearlings out of mares such as
Fayreform (NZ) (Tights), Midnight Babe (NZ)
(Kaapstad), Midnight Madam (NZ) (Kaapstad), Rijeka
(NZ) (Sound Reason), Scarlet Runner (NZ) (Kingdom Bay),
The Perfume Garden (NZ)
(Tights) and close relations to
many fine racehorses including Flitter (NZ) (Bluebird),
Activation (NZ) (Zabeel), Coogee Walk (NZ) (Success
Express), Wyndam Special (NZ) (Centaine), Gallic (NZ)
(Zabeel), Raw Instinct (NZ) Housebuster), Homewrecker
(NZ) (Housebuster), The Duke (Aus) (Danehill), Perlin
(NZ) (Carnegie), and Katana (NZ) (Volksraad).
We
believe the measure of our success is not only in the sales ring,
but also on the racetrack. In fact, the race track is where
all of the talking is done and in the last 18 months, Haunui Farm
has produced 11 individual stakes winners including two Group One
winners.
Arguably the highlight of this period was the performance of
four-year-old Railings (Aus) (Zabeel) in taking out the Group
One double of the Metropolitan Handicap and the Caulfield Cup, which
backed up his great 3rd as an autumn three-year-old in
the AJC Derby. Not far behind Railings were the impressive
dual Group One wins of the high quality galloper Perlin (NZ).
The Graeme Rogerson-trained son of
Carnegie won the Doomben Cup in the
Queensland winter and
then led all the way to win the Underwood Stakes at Caulfield in
emphatic style. Haunui Farm will offer a full sister to Perlin at
Karaka -Lot 450 - and a close relation by Van
Nistelrooy - Lot 448.

Railings taking out the G1 Caulfield
Cup
Another Graeme Rogerson trained galloper Activation (NZ)
(Zabeel) showed his immense ability when winning the Group
Three Coongy Handicap (2000m)
impressively. We will offer half brothers to both Railings and
Activation by Van Nistelrooy at the Sydney Easter sale in 2006.
Stakes winning gallopers Opportunity (NZ) (Redoute's
Choice), Pacific Dancer (NZ) (Groom Dancer), Natural Woman
(NZ) (Generous) , Devoted (NZ) (Bigstone), Ebony Honor
(NZ) (Honor Grades) , Raw Instinct (NZ) (Housebuster),
Champion Star (NZ) (Soviet Star), Gallic (NZ) (Zabeel)
and the exciting group one performing Tsarina Belle (NZ)
(Stravinsky) are all recent graduates of Haunui and we are confident
there are many more amongst our 2006 yearling sale draft.

First Yearlings to sell by Don Eduardo
and Van Nistelrooy
2006 will see the first crop of yearlings enter the sales
ring by AJC Derby-winner Don Eduardo.
"The Don" will be represented by 29
yearlings at Karaka in 2006 - five in the Premier Session, 19 in the
Select Session and five in the Festival Session.

Don
Eduardo
"Don Eduardo has all but completed his first season standing
at Haunui and he has received enormous support from breeders," said
Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. "It will be exciting to see his
first crop of yearlings enter the sales ring in 2006 and I'm sure
they will make quite an impression." he said.
Another stallion with Haunui links who will be represented by
his first crop in 2006 is the multiple stakes/group-winning
two-year-old Van Nistelrooy - a US$6.4 million yearling
himself.
Supported with some of the best broodmares in the country in
his first season at stud, that resultant crop will step out en force
at Karaka in January with 30 in the Premier catalogue, 25 in the
Select catalogue and two in Festival making him one of the most well
represented stallions at the sale.
One of the standout Van Nistelrooy yearlings in the Haunui
Draft is Lot 309, a colt out of multiple Group One-winner
Fayreform (NZ)
(Tights).

G1 Glory for
Almutawakel
Almutawakel (GB) (Machiavellian) may have stood only
one season at Haunui Farm but his impact on the New Zealand racing
industry was eminent at Levin last month when Wahid (NZ) and
Izzat (NZ) finished first and third in the G1 Levin Classic
(1600m) respectively.

Wahid
With a number of his progeny showing talent as two-year-olds,
Wahid one of them, this crop has come out at three to frank their
two-year-old form. In the ten days after the Levin Classic,
Almutawakel sired another three individual winners in the form of
Darringdo (NZ), La Calista (NZ) and Mizrahi
(NZ).
"Almutawakel stood at Haunui Farm in partnership with a
number of other studs," said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. "He
has made quite an impact with his only crop of NZ born
three-year-olds," he said. "It was always intended for him to
return to New
Zealand but he suffered an injury
in the Northern Hemisphere which causes a lot of problems for the
horse hence why we haven't been able to bring him back," said
Mark. "This is one of the
major reasons that we joined forces with
Trelawney Stud to secure Elusive
City (USA) (Elusive Quality)," says Mark. "He was an
exceptionally fast horse - a Group One winner at two of the Prix
Morny, a race won by a number of horses who have gone on to very
successful stud careers," he said.
Elusive City's impressive first Southern Hemisphere foals are
on the ground this season and amongst them are these two - a colt
out of Fikra (USA) (Gulch) a filly out of Cia (NZ)
(Sound Reason).

Breeding Season Wraps
Up
With Christmas upon us, the breeding season has all but ended
(to the delight of many!) and we couldn't be happier with the
results.
In
standing his first season at Haunui Farm, Don Eduardo has served a
book of just over 100 mares a wonderful achievement for a third
season sire.
Once again, he has received tremendous support from his
owners, Gooree Park Stud, but just as importantly, it has been the
reception of the horse by not only our existing clients, but the
many other broodmare owners that gives "the Don" a wonderful
opportunity to be a successful sire.
Don Eduardo is joined in the stallion ranks at Haunui by
New Trumps (Ire) (Cadeaux
Genereux). Owned by Hong Kong-based Richard Hui, he stands
privately at Haunui Farm and just a few weeks ago, sired his first
trial winner in the form of Mendent (NZ).
Trained by Chris and Colleen Wood,
this colt ran a very meritorious 6th first up to Chant
(NZ) (Traditionally), beaten three lengths in the Waikato RC
Fairview Ford Stakes.
It
is always our intention to send our mares to the best possible
stallions and in 2005, along with a number of our clients, we sent a
dozen mares to the Hunter Valley to be covered by some of
Australia's leading sires which included the likes of Dehere
(USA) (Deputy Minister), More
Than Ready (USA) (Southern
Halo), Redoute's Choice and Red Ransom.
Along with mares in foal to Zabeel, Pins (Aus)
(Snippets), Stravinsky, Savabeel (NZ) (Zabeel), One
Cool Cat (USA) (Storm Cat), Howbaddouwantit, Don Eduardo, Van
Nistelrooy and Elusive City we have ended the breeding season with
over 85% of the mares bred in foal.
