Two More for Elusive City 30 Jun 2008
Elusive Gift (NZ) (Elusive City) ran out an impressive winner at Hawkesbury on Saturday for trainer David Payne. A $130,000 yearling sale purchase at Karaka 2007, Elusive Gift ran second on debut in February and in her first start this preparation over 1000m, put paid to her rivals by two and a half lengths.

The news in the Northern Hemisphere was just as good with another debut winner for Elusive City with Estoril City (Ire) taking out the Prix de Biganos in France taking his Northern Hemisphere tally of winners to five.

“Elusive City has had a solid past two weeks with two stakes performers in the Northern Hemisphere and now another winner in Australia,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “We’re sure the results will continue to come for Elusive City and with more trials performers in recent weeks, he is starting to gain some momentum,” he said.

Elusive City stands at Haunui Farm in 2008 for a fee of $8,000 + GST.

Bravo Bravo Wins in Hong Kong 23 Jun 2008
New Trumps (Ire) (Caduaex Genereaux) stands privately at Haunui Farm on behalf of his Hong Kong owner Richard Hui. So, whilst the website news has been dominated in recent times by news of Iffraaj’s arrival, and the success of Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel) and Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) winners, “Trumper” was not to be outdone this past weekend with the impressive win of Bravo Bravo (NZ) (New Trumps) in Hong Kong.

Trained by Australian David Hill, Bravo Bravo validated his favourite status by storming home from the rear of the field for an impressive win in a Class 4 event over 1200m taking his tally to two wins and two seconds from just seven starts.

Earlier in the day, first starter Master Elite (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) also produced a scintillating finish from the rear of the field to win on debut with Silver Blaze (NZ) (Don Eduardo) an eye catching third. Silver Blaze is shaping up to be a promising young competitor in Hong Kong finishing in the money in his only three starts.

On the other side of the globe, two-year-old colt Countrywide City (Ire) (Elusive City) kept his sire’s tally of winners ticking over with a debut victory over 1000m.

So, whilst winter racing is settling in in New Zealand, racing in Hong Kong is winding up with trainers undoubtedly looking toward the International races in December where we hope to see the likes of Silver Blaze competing whilst in Europe, the flat season is well and truly underway and the progeny of Elusive City will have every chance to make their presence felt.

G2 Placegetter at Royal Ascot for Elusive City 19 Jun 2008
Connie Mac (Ire) (Elusive City) became the second Northern Hemisphere stakes performer for her sire when she finished a hard fought third in the Group Two Queen Mary Stakes over five furlongs at Royal Ascot on Wednesday.

Quickly out of the gates from barrier one, the filly sat on the speed for the duration of the race with a majority of the field selecting to stay on the stand side of the track. In just her second start after an impressive second at The Curragh two weeks ago, Connie Mac was beaten a neck and a head and looks to be a filly with a big future, especially as she appears to be a tough, strong filly.

Her Group placing comes hot on the heels of Elusive City colt Able Master (Ire) becoming the first stakes performer for his sire in the Northern Hemisphere with a third in the Listed Epsom Woodcote Stakes over six furlongs at Epsom last week.

“It is great to see Elusive City’s Northern Hemisphere two-year-olds starting to hit their straps,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “To have stakes performers at Epsom and now Royal Ascot is testament to the quality of horse that he is leaving and the results are reminiscent of this time last year when Van Nistelrooy’s first Northern Hemisphere crop started to excel and the results in the Southern Hemisphere were quick to follow,” he said. “Here’s hoping Elusive City is set to do the same,” says Mark.

This past week has been a successful one for the young sire with Able Master’s result as well as the impressive win of Discretion (NZ) (Elusive City) at Ellerslie and a stand out trials winner in the form of City Newton (NZ) (Elusive City).

Elusive City stands at Haunui Farm this season for a service fee of $8,000 + GST. For more information, please feel free to contact Shannon Taylor – 0212 855 513.

Discretion Wins for Elusive City 14 Jun 2008
Haunui Farm stallion Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) got some more points on the board today with the impressive win of two-year-old Discretion (NZ) (Elusive City) at Ellerslie earlier in the day.

Lining up over 1200m and jumping from barrier two, Discretion bounced out of the gates quickly for young jockey Daniel Stackhouse and went straight to the lead quickly putting five lengths on the field. Setting a solid clip until around the 600m mark, the colt came back nicely before kicking away again in the straight to win by one and a quarter lengths in a time of 1.13.77.

Trained at Cambridge by Arron Tata, and bred and raced by Jen Campin, Discretion raced twice as an early two-year-old and has had three starts back in this preparation finishing second at Ruakaka in his last start over 1000m at Ruakaka and then breaking through to break his maiden status at Ellerslie today.

Elusive City has had a successful past seven days with Able Master (Ire) (Elusive City) notching up his first blacktype performance in the Northern Hemisphere and impressive filly Connie Mac (Ire) (Elusive City) running second at The Curragh on debut.

Elusive City stands at Haunui in 2008 for a service fee of $8,000 + GST. For more information, please feel free to contact Shannon Taylor – 0212 855 513 or Mark Chitty – 021 663 995.

Elusive City Gets First Stakes Performer in the North 11 Jun 2008
Two-year-old colt Able Master (Ire) (Elusive City) became the first Northern Hemisphere stakes performer for his sire when running third in the Listed Epsom Woodcote Stakes (1200m) this past weekend.

The winner of his first two starts, Able Master was a €15,000 weanling from Elusive City’s first Northern Hemisphere crop.

This weekend also saw the filly Connie Mac (Ire) (Elusive City) debut impressively over 1200m at The Curragh for second. Trained from the small yard of Andrew Oliver, the filly was one of only two fillies in the field, the other being the winner Shimah (USA) (Storm Cat), owned by Sheikh Hamdan al Maktoum.

“Elusive City has already had stakes performing two-year-olds in both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere’s,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “I’ve just returned from Ireland at the end of May and the talk up there about his progeny is very encouraging,” he said. “He’d covered just over 130 mares when we were there out of a full book of 160 which was closed off in March and he served 160 up there last season as well,” says Mark. “Breeders are really getting behind the horse up there, he has sold well at sales in both hemisphere’s with six-figure yearlings in every crop – and not just one or two,” he said.

“Elusive City has had a number of trials winners and performers here in New Zealand that have been put aside for better tracks and now we just have to wait for the results to come which we’re confident they will – look at Van Nistelrooy and what his progeny have done,” said Mark.

Elusive City stands at Haunui Farm in 2008 for a fee of $8,000 + GST.

Success in Singapore for Haunui Grads 9 Jun 2008
Haunui graduates Rooy (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) and Gold Key (NZ) (Shinko King) have carried on the success of horses carrying the HF brand in Singapore in recent times, following in the footsteps of Champion two-year-old and outstanding three-year-old, Onceuponatime (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy).

Rooy scored his first victory this past Saturday after a debuting with a third on the 17th of May. Lining up on both occasions over 1200m, Rooy’s win on Saturday was in a restricted race for two and three-year-olds.

Haunui is home to Rooy’s dam, Gu Li (NZ) (Last Tycoon). Now owned by David Pleasance and Louise Bets, Gu Li is a resident mare at Haunui and has two cracking Don Eduardo’s on the ground – a yearling filly and a weanling colt.

Another Haunui graduate successful in Singapore recently was Gold Key who made it two wins from two starts when winning over 1400m on the 1st of June.

Haunui Broodmare Band Recieves International Boost 4 Jun 2008
Haunui Farm’s broodmare band received an international boost this past weekend with the win of three-year-old filly Modern Look (GB) (Zamindar) in the Group Two Prix Sandringham at Chantilly on Saturday. This win was added to her last start fourth in the French equivalent of the Oaks and a Group Three win as a two-year-old.

Out of Prophecy (Ire) (Warning), Modern Look is a half sister to Destined (GB) (Danehill), who is owned in partnership by Haunui Farm and client Cathy Franich under her Frantic Bloodstock banner. Destined was the first mare to foal at Haunui in 2007 – a colt by Galileo (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) – who is currently a weanling and she is due to foal to Zabeel (NZ) (Sir Tristram) this coming Spring.

“We have been watching this filly closely as she had such a good two-year-old season,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “It is great to see that she has come up again at three and we are more than happy to have her half sister here at Haunui,” he said. “The international buying bench has become so important at Australasian sales in recent years so to have mares with truly international pedigrees is becoming more and more important,” says Mark.

Destined will be covered by Haunui Farm’s new stallion Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic) this coming season.

Haunui Hold Strong Hand in Oaks & Derby 30 May 2008
Haunui Farm graduates Valpolicella (NZ) (Red Ransom) and Mission Critical (Aus) (Fantastic Light) will both line up as highly fancied runners in the Group One Queensland Oaks and Group One Queensland Derby respectively.

Valpolicella will line up tomorrow in the A$400,000 Queensland Oaks one of the favourites for the event having beaten consequent AJC Derby-winner Nom De Jeu (NZ) (Montjeu) in her last New Zealand start before heading to Queensland. Two solid lead up races in Australia prior to the Oaks, have heralded a fourth in the Listed Gold Coast Bracelet (1800m) and a third in the Group Three Doomben Roses (2020m) just 1.2 lengths from the winner.

Trainer Roger James has reported this week that Valpolicella’s work has been better than ever with the filly bucking and squealing after coming off the track on Monday. “We are where we want to be heading into the race she has been set for,” said Roger. “She has been working well, she is feeling well so we’ve done everything we can,” he said.

On Saturday week, Mission Critical will line up as one of the favourites for the Queensland Derby after a strong win in the Group Three BTC Rough Habit Plate (2020m) last week. His trainers Mike and Paul Moroney have been having a stellar run of late and hopefully this continues in the last major three-year-old event on the Australasia calendar.

Mission Critical added his name to the Haunui Honours Board earlier this year with victory over the older horses on the Group One Waikato International Stakes (2000m).

Don Eduardo Quinella at Awapuni 30 May 2008
It was a successful day on the track for Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel) at Awapuni yesterday with his two fillies Cadonna (NZ) and All In Black (NZ) finishing first and second in the fillies and mares event over 1600m.

Cadonna, trained by her part owner and breeder, Mark Oulaghan, was lining up for just her third race day appearance after a debut third on the 25th of April. Ridden by experienced jockey Hayden Tinsley, she was bounced out of the gate quickly to vie for the lead in the early stages before being eased to get some cover just outside the lead.

Swinging into the turn, Tinsley moved Cadonna into some space and from there the race was never in doubt, the only challenge coming from the other Don Eduardo filly in the field in the form of the John Wheeler-trained All In Grace who wound up late, finishing strongly to finish second.

Success on the trials track came earlier in the day with two-year-old fillyTequilla (NZ) (Don Eduardo) winning impressively for the Autridge-Hawtin training partnership. A daughter of Smooch (NZ) (Rory’s Jester), this filly has an outstanding pedigree and according to co-trainer Stephen Autridge will be a nice filly come the Spring. “We trialled her about five weeks ago and then gave her a bit of a break,” he said. “She trialled on good ground yesterday when she won but it’s hard to know what the tracks will be like in a couple of weeks time so it’s hard to make any plans,” he said. “She’ll be a nice filly come the spring.”

Another two-year-old filly from the Autridge-Hawtin stable to trial nicely was a filly out of Jo Valachi (NZ) (The Jogger) who finished second in her heat. “That was her first trial and she’ll be another nice filly for the Spring,” he said. “One thing I’ll say is that they definitely show a lot more speed that you would expect them to,” commented Stephen, and he’s not the first to make this statement with John Sargent also making the same comment when spoken to in the early stages of Il Divo’s career.

Don Eduardo stands at Haunui Farm in 2008 for a service fee of $10,000 + GST. For more information, please feel free to contact Shannon Taylor – 0212 855 513 or Mark Chitty – 021 663 995.

A Double for Don Eduardo 22 May 2008
It was a successful day at Counties yesterday for resident Haunui stallion Don Eduardo with two of his fillies, Jessardo (NZ) and Zirconia Lover (NZ) winning in impressive fashion.

Jessardo, ridden by Tasha Collett for father Richard, got her sire off the mark early in the day with victory over 1200m in the third event on the card.

Jumping nicely and then settled toward the end of the field, both horse and rider had a wall of horses in front of them turning for home and it wasn’t until the last 100m when the filly got some racing room, that she powered home under a hands and heels ride to win comfortably by three-quarters of a length.

The last race of the day saw another Don Eduardo filly assert her authority over her counterparts, this time over 1600m. Zirconia Lover, trained by Mike and Paul Moroney, was settled handy to the pace in the 17 horse field by jockey Michael Coleman and challenged race favourite Monument (NZ) Monolith) on the turn. From then on, it was a ding-dong battle between the two with Zirconia Lover surging ahead in the shadows of the post.

Don Eduardo has been represented by three stakes performers in his first crop through the deeds of Dashing Donna (NZ), Il Divo (NZ) and Vickezzchardonnay (NZ). He has now had 16 individual winners from his first crop. Don Eduardo stands at Haunui Farm in 2008 for a service fee of $10,000 + GST.

More Success for Don McLaren 5 May 2008
Haunui Farm-client Don McLaren had another successful weekend on the track with Kosi Bay (NZ) (Spinning World), a filly he bred, victorious in the Group Two Emancipation Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Out of Calvinia (Aus) (Varick), Kosi Bay was sold through Haunui’s 2003 Inglis Easter Yearling Draft and was purchased for $130,000 by legendary trainer Bart Cummings. She has proved to be a consistent stakes performer on the track, her first black type success coming in the Listed Epona Stakes (1900m) in the Autumn of 2006 and since then, she has placed third in the Listed JRA Plate (2000m), third in the Group One VRC Meyer Classic (1600m), third in the STC Canterbury Stakes (1300m), and second in the Emancipation Stakes last year.

Kosi Bay is a half sister to the Group One winner Calveen (NZ) (Canny Lad) who was raced by Don and who has been retired to his select broodmare band. Don will race her first foal, a filly by Rock Of Gibraltar (Ire) (Danehill) and is awaiting the arrival of her second foal by Encosta De Lago this spring.

Further success came in the South Island when Anzali (NZ) (Zabeel), carrying Don's colours, finished third in the Listed Warstep Stakes (2000m). Trained by Mark Walker, Anzali was bred and is owned by Don, being out of the stakes winner and Group One-performer Danasia (Aus) (Danehill).

“It is always nice to see our clients getting success and Don has certainly put a lot into the industry,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “Kosi Bay has certainly turned out to be a consistent performer both she and Calveen have added to this pedigree remarkably,” he said. “Don’s Rock Of Gibraltar filly out of Calveen is an outstanding type and he should have a lot of fun racing her over the next few seasons,” he said.

Don has been a long time client of Haunui and after reducing his broodmare band a number of years ago, has purchased a number of mares in partnership with Haunui Farm.

The Haunui-McLaren partnership was added to this weekend through the purchase of Raining Monarch (Aus) (Royal Academy) at the Inglis Broodmare Sale for $310,000. A daughter of Rainscene (Aus) (Scenic), Raining Monarch is a half sister to Galapagos Girl (Aus) (Dehere), Procrastinate (Aus) (Jade Hunter) – the dam of Laisserfaire (Aus) (Danehill), Foreplay (Aus) (Danehill) and Personify (Aus) (Galileo) – and Kampaign (NZ) (Kampalo). “This is a great family to get into and with the market as strong as it is, we were pleased to be able to secure Raining Monarch,” said Mark.

Another stakes performer for Don Eduardo 5 May 2008
Talented three-year-old filly Vickezzchardonnay (NZ) (Don Eduardo) became her sire’s third stakes performer with a hard fought second in the Listed New Zealand Bloodstock Warstep Stakes (2000m).

LEFT: DON EDUARDO

Vickezzchardonnay jumped well and was settled in mid-field by jockey Hayden Tinsley making up some good ground down the back straight to sit in just behind the leader coming to the home turn. A race run in testing conditions, a number of runners made their runs wider out on the track however Tinsley and Vickezzchardonnay remained closer to the inside and looked the winners until Belmont Cat (NZ) (Felix The Cat) emerged from the pack, relishing the very wet conditions.

Trained by Murray Baker, Vickezzchardonnay has been a consistent filly this campaign coming close on a number of occasions. She ran an impressive third in the Ellerslie Oaks (2100m) as a lead up into the New Zealand Oaks where she finished a close fifth and in her three starts since, she has finished second.

Saturday also saw another winner for Don Eduardo across the Tasman with Gooree Park Stud’s homebred Tio Juan (NZ) (Don Eduardo) scoring impressively over a mile at Newcastle. Trained by Gai Waterhouse, Tio Juan has started on only four occasions with two seconds, a fifth and now a win to his credit. “Hopefully with this win under his belt, we can move him into the city for a few nice races,” said Andrew Baddock of Gooree Park Stud.

“There are plenty of people keeping an eye on the Don Eduardo’s,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “He has left some very smart types and buyers have certainly been more than happy to pay good money for them,” said Mark. “He has sold six figure yearlings from three yearling crops so far and at a $10,000 service fee, that represents very good value,” says Mark. “There are not many stallions in that service fee bracket that can leave those types of yearlings,” he said.

Don Eduardo has six weanlings in the upcoming New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling and Broodmare Sale. He stands at Haunui Farm in 2008 for a service fee of $10,000 + GST.

Better luck next time 30 Apr 2008
Below is an article written by Peter Falconer that appeared in the April 11th issue of The Informant. We thought it made for good reading and would like to thank The Informant for allowing us to post it on our website.

Better luck next time - by Peter Falconer

There are few bigger hard luck stories in Australian thoroughbred breeding than that relating to the form top-class European racehorse and sire Zafonic (USA).

LEFT: Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic) - coming to Haunui in 2008

One of the most acclaimed colts of the past 50-odd years of international racing, Zafonic was a 2 and 3-year-old of rare ability, capturing the celebrated Newmarket double of the Dewhurst Stakes (Gr. 1) and 2000 Guineas (Gr. 1) as few before him, and even fewer since.

The prized possession of Prince Khalid Abdullah, once the thoroughbred world’s most successful breeder-owners, Zafonic quickly established himself as an outrageously pre-potent stallion on his retirement to Juddmonte Farms.

Group winner was followed by Group winner. The world was the Gone West stallion’s proverbial oyster. Little could anyone have imagined what was next to follow.

Miraculously secured by John Messara to serve as a shuttle stallion at Arrowfield Stud during the southern hemisphere breeding season of 2002, the exercise resulted in complete and utter disaster.

Within days of covering his first Australian broodmares, Zafonic suffered a fatal paddock accident and was lost to the thoroughbred world far too prematurely.

The sum total of Zafonic’s ill-fated venture Down Under was just four fillies, now 4-year-olds, two of which have at least broken their maiden status on the racetrack, though at circuits far removed form British racing’s headquarters.

Hopefully New Zealand’s experience with the breed ultimately proves to be considerable more fruitful.

Following the aborted first intended season of Iffraaj (GB) in New Zealand last year, the high-class son of Zafonic is set to make his belated debut Down Under when taking his place on the Haunui Farm stallion roster this coming southern hemisphere breeding season.

Clients of the Auckland stud farm have a genuine treat in store.
A strapping bay entire as handsome as handsome can be, Iffraaj competed with great distinction from 2 to 5-years of age and managed just about everything that is possible on the racetrack other than victory in Group 1 company.

He could not have come any closer to one though.

Watch a replay of the 2006 July Cup (Gr. 1) over Newmarket’s hallowed six-furlong course and the horse charging past the likes of Takeover Target and Falkirk into second position is Haunui Farm’s visitor later this year.

Iffraaj’s seven career wins from just 13 career outings witnessed him most effective at the specialist sprint distance of 7 furlongs, the journey over which he posted no fewer than three Group 2 victories.

That fact notwithstanding, Iffraaj is probably best summed-up as arguably the best European galloper of the past couple of decades not to have won at the highest level.

One only hopes that Zafonic’s son meets with better luck than his forebear during an inaugural local stud season in service.

Iffraaj on his way to Haunui in 2008 30 Apr 2008
After announcing last season that dual Group Two-winner and Group One performer Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic) would be joining the Haunui stallion roster, the outbreak of Equine Influenza put a halt to his arrival in New Zealand. Limited to a book of 120 mares, Iffraaj was set to cover his full quota in New Zealand in 2007 and Haunui Farm are pleased to announce that he will get to do so in 2008.

“We received a fantastic response from breeders when we announced Iffraaj last year and it was certainly very disappointing not to have been able to get him to New Zealand due to the outbreak of EI in Australia where he was quarantined,” said Mark. “He is on his way to Haunui in 2008 and is an exciting stallion to have on our roster being such a highly credentialed race horse and, a close relation to Cape Cross who has been such a great success in the Southern Hemisphere,” said Mark.

By the ill-fated Zafonic (USA) (Gone West), one of the most highly acclaimed colts of the last half century, Iffraaj is out of Pastorale (GB) (Nureyev), a half sister to Cape Cross and to the dam of Group One-winner and successful sire Diktat (GB) (Warning) and, is herself a daughter of Champion two-year-old Park Appeal (GB) (Ahonoora).

A multiple Group Two-winner including the Park Stakes two years running and, the Lennox Stakes, Iffraaj was beaten just a whisker in the time honoured Group One Darley July Cup over 6f. An outstanding sprinter on turf, Iffraaj was a race horse held in the highest regard in the Northern Hemisphere and earned this reputation as a four and five-year-old after injury curtailed his entire three-year-old season. “He was obviously highly thought of by his connections being such a well-bred colt and being allowed to race on at four and five,” says Mark. “It also says a lot for the horse’s aptitude and temperament to race at the highest level as an older horse,” he said.

With a Timeform rating of 127 and an International Classification of 128 upon retirement, Iffraaj was rated above numerous international performers including Electrocutionist – three-time Group One-winner including the Dubai World Cup - Takeover Target – four-time Group One-winner and Champion Australian Sprinter - Les Arcs – two-time Group One-winner including the July Cup - Ad Valorem – two-time Group One-winner including the Middle Park Stakes and Queen Anne Stakes - and Ouija Board – seven-time Group One winner and Champion European Mare.

Standing his first season at stud in 2007 at Kildangan in Ireland, Iffraaj served a full book or mares and is on his way to covering another full book in 2008. His first foals have created a strong impression among breeders in the Northern Hemisphere with Michael Dalton stating his colt out of Dance Clear (Ire) (Marju) “is the nicest we have on the farm this year. He has lots of scope and is very well put together,” he said.

“The foal reports we have received are very encouraging and Iffraaj seems to be stamping his progeny,” said Mark. “They are all bays with very little white, are correct, have good bone, natural muscle and a good hip and I look forward to seeing a number of them when I visit Kildangan in a fortnights time,” he said.

Iffraaj will stand at Haunui Farm in 2008 for a service fee of NZ$12,000 + GST and with the support of partners Ardsley Stud, Chequers Stud, Fairdale Stud, Millfield Stud, Monovale Farm, Soliloquy Lodge, Trelawney Stud and, Paul and Mary Kenny and Jen Campin will be given a great opportunity. “Given that Cape Cross is resting from shuttle duties this year, Iffraaj represents a great opportunity for breeders to utilise a stallion who most importantly proved himself on the racetrack, represents a pedigree that has been so successful in the Southern Hemisphere and, is from the proven Mr Prospector sire line which has been so successful” says Mark.

Stakes Performer for Elusive City 28 Apr 2008
Talented filly Metropolitan (NZ) (Elusive City) put in a bold performance at Avondale on ANZAC Day to notch up her first stakes performance and importantly, the first stakes performance for her sire Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) when finishing third in the New Zealand Bloodstock 2YO Fillies Stakes (1200m).

Trained by Keith and Brendon Hawtin and, Stephen Autridge, Metropolitan ran third in her first start at the end of March and went one better in her next attempt over 1100m in April. Stepping up in class on Friday, the filly didn’t disappoint and looks to have a promising future ahead as she gets over a little more ground.

Elusive City made a flying start to his stallion career in the Northern Hemisphere with his first starter Man River (Ire) winning on debut in France. Currently standing his fourth season in Ireland, Elusive City’s book was closed at the end of February after once again receiving enormous support from Irish breeders. “He is immensely popular in Ireland serving full books both this season and last,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “It would be great if we could get those results in New Zealand and I think they will come as more and more of his progeny step out on to the track,” says Mark. “He served 91 mares here last season and we’re looking forward to another good book in 2009,” he said.

“I’ve just returned from Sydney where I caught up with Mark Pilkington. They have four Elusive City’s in the David Hayes stable – three two-year-olds and a yearling – and they rate them all highly,” said Mark. “They have labelled Aqaleem a stakes horse which is very exciting and there looks to be a number of exciting prospects in New Zealand based on recent trials performances that have all been put aside for the Autumn,” said Mark. “So, we’re already looking forward to the end of winter!”

Valpolicella off to Brisbane 28 Apr 2008
Three-year-old filly Valpolicella (NZ) (Red Ransom) will finally get her chance at the big time when she boards the plane to Brisbane tomorrow for a tilt at the Group One Queensland Oaks.

The winner of the Group Three Manawatu Classic (2000m) at her last start, beating subsequent AJC Derby-winner Nom Du Jeu (NZ) (Montjeu), she galloped impressively between races last week at Matamata with trainer Roger James putting the stamp of approval on her trip to Queensland.

“All going well she will finally get her chance at Group One level as a three-year-old,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “Hopefully she has had her share of little set-backs and she can have a smooth preparation for the Oaks,” he said.

Valpolicella isn’t the only member of the Haunui racing team to have been performing over the last few weeks. The John Sargent stable has produced two impressive Haunui runners in recent times, El Chico (NZ) (Stravinsky) who ran second over 1200m on the 9th of April and Zabaat (NZ) (Faltaat), a half brother to Group One-winner Art Success (NZ) (Pentire) who after a spell, returned to the track for his third start doing everything right to win over 1200m at Matamata on the 23rd of April.

“Sarg is very happy with both of these horses and it is just a matter of seeing how the tracks hold up over the next few weeks as to where they go next,” says Mark. “Either way, it’s good to see the colours to the fore and they are two horses to watch out for,” he said.

Sales Success in Sydney 28 Apr 2008
The Inglis Easter Yearling Sale was once again a resounding success with yet again more multi-million dollar yearlings being sold through the ring. With 502 yearlings catalogued for the first session of the sale, with a sale average of A$376,342 was achieved – impressive to say the least.

Haunui offered three yearlings in the main session of the sale, all of which proved popular with buyers prior to the sale and the results in the sale ring didn’t disappoint.

LEFT: Lot 93 br f Dehere - Eire Hostess, sold for $370,000

The first yearling offered by Haunui was Lot 44, the colt by Redoute’s Choice (Aus) (Danehill) out of dual Group One-winner Coogee Walk (NZ) (Success Express). Purchased by Anthony Cummings for $550,000, it was a great result for breeder Marie Leicester as the colt was bred on a free return to Redoute’s Choice prior to his large service fee increase. “He has gone to a very good judge and a trainer who can produce Group One horses,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “It would be great to see this colt go on and perform at the highest level and there’s no doubt Anthony can do that,” he said.

The two fillies of the Haunui draft provided the highlights of the sale with Lot 93, the Dehere (USA) (Deputy Minister) filly out of two-year-old stakes winner Eire Hostess (NZ) (O’Reilly) fetching $370,000 to the bid of Dean Hawthorne for his major client Jonathan Munz. The second surprise came on day two of the sale when Lot 218, the Stravinsky (USA) (Nureyev) filly out of Luna Scene (NZ) (Langfuhr) went through the ring. A filly that really hit her straps on the sale ground, she was purchased by International Bloodstock Agent Adrian Nicol under the BBA Ireland banner for $450,000.

“The two fillies provided a nice surprise,” said Mark. “They had both been very popular and the trip to Australia and the pressure of parading each and every day just really made the Stravinsky filly,” said Mark. “Both sold well above expectations and both will get every opportunity to go on to bigger things which is all you can ask for especially for young mares,” said Mark. “The main sale was just outstanding and it just seems to get better and better,” he said. “The atmosphere is fantastic!”

The second session of the sale saw a marked drop in momentum with a distinct decrease in the quality of the catalogue however, the four yearlings offered by Haunui still achieved pleasing results. Lot 590, the Pins (Aus) (Snippets) filly out of Trebuchet (NZ) (Bigstone) was purchased by Anthony Cummings for $90,000, Lot 658, the Danzero (Aus) (Danehill) filly out of Diva Belle (NZ) (Carnegie) was purchased by Vin Cox Bloodstock for $85,000 whilst Anthony Cummings also signed for Lot 676, the Fastnet Rock (Aus) (Danehill) filly out of Fleet Marguerite (USA) (Gulch), paying $70,000.

Haunui’s three yearlings in the first session sold for an average of $456,666 whilst in the second session, the three yearlings sold accounted for an average of $81,666.

“Unfortunately the colt by One Cool Cat didn’t quite meet his mark but he wasn’t too far away from the reserve,” said Mark. “He will be retained by his owner for racing in Australia and by all accounts, they should have a bit of fun with him,” he said. “The second session was definitely a little more challenging than we initially thought it might be but we are very happy with the results we achieved and overall, we had a great sale,” said Mark.

First Starter, First Winner in the Northern Hemisphere for Elusive City 9 Apr 2008
Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) got his stallion career off to the best possible start in the Northern Hemisphere on Monday with his first starter taking the honours in the two-year-old event at Maisons-Laffitte in Paris.

Man River (Fr) (Elusive City, an early two-year-old runner from the Alain de Royer Dupre stable, won over 900m, fighting it out to the line to win by a nose with a further two-and-a-half lengths back to third place to get his sire off the mark in the Northern Hemisphere as the flat racing season starts to get underway.

“Monday’s winner was a great start up here,” said Irish bloodstock agent Hubie de Burgh, who played an integral part in securing Elusive City as a stallion prospect. “It is very unusual for Alain de Royer Dupre to have a two-year-old runner so early in the season but he has said that this horse has a lot of natural speed and his main goal will be the Group One Prix Morny later in the year – the same race that Elusive City won,” he said. “There are very encouraging reports out of some of the big stables in England about Elusive City’s two-year-olds and when we start to get better ground, a few of these horses will appear on the track,” said Hubie.

Retired to stud in 2004, Elusive City stood his first season at stud in the Southern Hemisphere at Trelawney Stud shuttling from there to Huma Park Stud in Ireland. Owned in the Southern Hemisphere by a partnership which includes Cambridge Stud, Fairdale Stud, Haunui Farm and Trelawney Stud, in his third season, Elusive City transferred to Haunui Farm in the Southern Hemisphere and also made a change in the Northern Hemisphere to stand at the Irish National Stud.

Elusive City’s first crop of foals were well received around the globe. His top price in the South was $170,000 paid by Mark Pilkington for a colt at the Magic Millions Sale whilst Roger James paid the same amount for a filly at Karaka, whilst in the North his yearlings fetched up to €220,000, Man River being his top seller. Karaka 2008 saw three more six figure yearlings for Elusive City – all fillies - and it would be expected that this season’s Northern Hemisphere yearlings will sell just as well later in the year.

From his first Southern Hemisphere crop, Elusive City has produced the impressive winner Aqaleem (NZ). Trained by David Hayes, he ran third on debut at Morphetville over 1050m, ran second at 1200m at Caulfield in his next start and subsequently won in impressive fashion at Moonee Valley in start number three, again over the 1200m distance.

The last six weeks have seen a number of trials winners and performers by Elusive City, the latest winner a colt out of Gordon’s (NZ) (Kaapstad) at Cambridge yesterday from the stable of Lance Noble. “The comments in the Southern Hemisphere very much reflect those in the North,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “Trainers are very happy with the Elusive City’s and hopefully we can look forward to a successful autumn,” he said.

Debut Winner for "The Don" 2 Apr 2008
Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel) recorded another impressive winner in Australia today.

Moti (NZ) (Don Eduardo), on debut for the Gai Waterhouse stable, fought strongly to the line in her first start winning impressively over 1200m at Newcastle.

Bred by Gooree Park Stud, Moti races in the all familiar black and red striped colours worn by her sire. "It was great to get a first up win," said Andrew Baddock of Gooree Park Stud. "She looks to be a filly with a fair amount of ability and hopefully she will be able to mix it at City level in her next start," he said.

Out of It's Spring Again (Aus) (Last Tycoon), this filly's half sister was purchased by Paul Beamish for $190,000 at Karaka 2007 and is currently in the stable of Lisa Latta.

This weekend, will see smart filly Dashing Donna (NZ) (Don Eduardo) lining up against Mufhasa (NZ) (Pentire) at Te Aroha over 1400m while across the Tasman, Don Eduardo will be represented by Najib (NZ) at Caulfield and Tio Juan (NZ) at Newcastle.

Valpolicella Victorious in Manawatu Classic 31 Mar 2008
Valpolicella (NZ) (Red Ransom) proved what we all knew on Saturday, that she is in fact a class act, with a decisive win in the Group Three Manawatu Classic (2000m).

The winner of the Listed Champagne Stakes (1600m) in her last start at two, a tilt at the Group One New Zealand Oaks was on the agenda as a three-year-old however, after taking a little more time to fill out her frame and, two minor set-backs, the decision was made to forgo the New Zealand Oaks but Saturday’s performance might just be enough to see the filly board a plane in the winter and head to Queensland where she might finally get her chance to line up in an Oaks field.

“It was a great thrill to see her win the way she did on Saturday,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “This whole preparation has been a little frustrating with a few small hiccups but Roger James has done a great job and has always had faith in the filly,” said Mark. “She beat a high quality field on Saturday and proved that she is right up there as we have thought all along,” he said.

Valpolicella is a seventh generation winner from the Haunui Farm foundation family. Her dam Riesling (NZ) (Last Tycoon) has a Zabeel (NZ) (Sir Tristram) weanling filly on the ground and is due to foal to Zabeel again in 2008. “This family has been remarkable and continues to produce group horses almost every season,” said Mark.

Dashing Donna and Silver Blaze - Weekend Winners for Don Eduardo 27 Mar 2008
Dashing Donna (NZ) (Don Eduardo) looks to be on track for her tilt at the Group One Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) with an easy victory over 1400m at Tauranga last Saturday.

Stakes placed as a two-year-old, Dashing Donna was sold by her breeder and trainer, Nigel Auret to Hong Kong-based Dominic Li. Transferred to the stable of Donna and Dean Logan and Chris Gibbs, the filly has lined up on six occasions with three wins, two seconds and a third to her credit.

“She’s not very big but she is a very tough filly and she turns into a different horse as soon as the gates open,” says co-trainer Donna Logan.

Don Eduardo has also made an impact in Hong Kong with his latest winner the grey Silver Blaze. With an Auckland Cup-winner in his pedigree and being by an AJC Derby-winner, Silver Blaze showed a slick turn of foot over 1000m to win on debut for trainer Dennis Yip.

Bred by Ron Fokerd, Silver Blaze was a $120,000 Ready to Run Sale where he was purchased by Willie Leung under his Magus Equine banner.

This Saturday, Don Eduardo will be represented by three-year-old filly Divine Rebel (NZ) in the Group Three Manawatu Classic (2000m) where she will take on the colts and geldings in one of the final major three-year-old events of the season.

Valpolicella in Manawatu Classic 27 Mar 2008
With an impressive win at Te Rapa on the 18th of March, Haunui filly Valpolicella (NZ) (Red Ransom) will line up to contest the Group Three Manawatu Classic (2000m) on Saturday.

Valpolicella’s three-year-old campaign hasn’t been all plain sailing with her initial campaign planned around a tilt at the New Zealand Oaks. A pulled muscle on Christmas Day and a stone bruise leading into a crucial start at Ellerslie on Auckland Cup Day meant that the Oaks was by-passed however, her return to winning form at Te Rapa with an impressive one-and-a-half length victory sees her take her place in the 16 horse field at Palmerston North on Saturday.

“After finishing her two-year-old season on such a high, this campaign has certainly been a little frustrating,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “But Roger has always had every confidence in the filly and hopefully on Saturday she can show what a good filly she is,” said Mark. “It will be an interesting race with the likes of Derby runners Nom Du Jeu and Pierre Joseph in the field,” he said. “Hopefully Poli can put her best foot forward and we can get the result we’re after,” said Mark.

All going well, a Queensland Campaign could well be on the agenda for Valpolicella. “This season was all about the New Zealand Oaks but with the few niggles the filly has had, she hasn’t had too much racing so a tilt at the Queensland Oaks could definitely be in the pipeline,” said Mark.

Easter Yearling Preview 27 Mar 2008
Normally, at this time of year, the Haunui team would be in full swing selling yearlings at the Sydney Easter Yearling Sale however, with the outbreak of Equine Influenza, the Easter Sale has been put back to April and on the 13th, Haunui’s draft of eight yearlings will head across the Tasman to go under the hammer at Newmarket.

Headlining the draft is Lot 44, a Redoute’s Choice (Aus) (Danehill) colt out of the Group One-winner Coogee Walk (NZ) (Success Express). Bred by Marie Leicester, he has grown into an outstanding individual and will undoubtedly be on many buyers’ lists.

Two fillies round out Haunui’s three in Part One of the sale. Lot 93 is an almost black filly by Dehere (USA) (Deputy Minister) out of the stakes winner Eire Hostess (NZ) (O’Reilly). Powerfully built, this filly is a first foal and is from the family of AJC Derby-winner Headturner (Aus) (Anabaa).

Lot 218 is a chestnut filly by Stravinsky (USA) (Nureyev) out of Luna Scene (NZ) (Langfuhr), a half sister to stakeswinner Andrella (Aus) (Dehere) and from the family of five-time Group One-winner Planet Ruler (Aus) (Kaoru Star).

Haunui will be represented by five yearlings in Part Two of the sale taking place on Thursday 24th of April. Lot 503, a One Cool Cat (USA) (Storm Cat) colt out of Java Moon (USA) (Thunder Gulch) will be first Lot through the ring on this day of selling. A colt with an international pedigree, the likes of Champion Older Horse Doyen and, Champion Three-Year-Old filly Miss Finland are featured on his page.

Lot 590 is a Pins (Aus) (Snippets) filly, the fourth foal out of Trebuchet (NZ) (Bigstone). She is a half sister to two winners and the promising two-year-old Storm the Castle (NZ) (Elusive City). With the success that the progeny of Pins have had on racetracks in both New Zealand and Australia these past two seasons, his progeny have been well sought after in yearling sale rings, Sydney will be no different.

The last of the colts in the Haunui draft to go through the ring will be Lot 604. Also by One Cool Cat, he is out of Zafonique (NZ) (Bigstone), a full sister to Group Two-winner Lady Mulan (NZ).

Lot 658 is a Danzero (Aus) (Danehill) filly out of Diva Belle (NZ) (Carnegie), a daughter of the outstanding race mare Tri Belle (NZ) (Sir Tristram) whilst Lot 676 rounds out the Haunui draft, a filly by Fastnet Rock (Aus) (Danehill) out of Fleet Marguerite (USA) (Gulch). This filly is a half sister to Waikato Guineas-winner Blimey O’Reilly (NZ) (O’Reilly) and to stakes performer Strategy (Aus) (Danehill).

Haunui Graduate Wins on Debut 27 Mar 2008
Haunui Farm graduate Amazing Red (NZ) (Red Ransom) got his racing career off to a great start with a one and three-quarter length victory in the 1150m two-year-old event at Paeroa yesterday.

Bred by Don and Rochelle McLaren, Amazing Red is the third foal out of the imported stakes winner American Cash (USA) (American Chance). Sold from the 2007 Haunui yearling draft, Amazing Red was purchased by David Ellis for $75,000.

Group Three Success for Onceuponatime 3 Mar 2008
Haunui graduate Onceuponatime (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) erased the frustrations of three close seconds in Group races with a convincing victory in the $200,000 SIN-G3 Singapore Guineas (1600m) on Friday night.

After showing a tendency to lay in during the all important final stages of his races, trainer David Hill added the winkers to Onceuponatime this start in a move that proved successful to say the least.

Settled toward the rear of the field by jockey Danny Beasley, Onceuponatime was taken to the outside in the run home hitting the lead at the 200m mark and quickly put paid to his rivals running out a very comfortable winner. “His acceleration is enormous,” said Danny Beasley after the race.

After the race, trainer David Hill hinted that Onceuponatime would get a tilt at the Group One Singapore Airlines International Cup (2000m) that will be run in May but stated that his main aim remains the Singapore Derby next year.

“Onceuponatime looks to be a very serious racehorse,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “He is obviously one of the best, if not the best, of his age group in Singapore and he has already shown he is competitive against the older horses – he’s beaten them,” he said. “Onceuponatime has done a lot for his sire, Van Nistelrooy, a horse that we were involved in bringing to New Zealand and he is certainly going a long way to making the mare as well,” said Mark.

Onceuponatime was bred by Haunui Farm and Jim Otway and was sold at the 2006 NZB Ready-to-Run Sale for $60,000. The fourth foal out of the Group Two- winner Scarlet Runner (NZ) (Kingdom Bay), he has a weanling half sister by Pins (Aus) (Snippets) and the mare is currently in foal to Haunui resident stallion Don Eduardo.

First Winner for Elusive City 25 Feb 2008
Aqaleem (NZ) (Elusive City) notched up the first victory for his sire, Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) with a three-and-a-half length win over 1300m at Bendigo on Sunday.

Trained by David Hayes, the two-year-old colt was a $150,000 purchase by international bloodstock agent Angus Gold for Shadwell Australia. Bred and sold by Trelawney Stud, Aqaleem is a out of Carmel Valley (Aus) (Last Tycoon) and is a half brother to Group One-winner Hill Of Grace (NZ) (Zabeel).

“It is fantastic to get Elusive City’s first winner on the board,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “To get a result in Australia is very pleasing and it’s also apt that Trelawney Stud should be the breeders of his first winner,” said Mark.

Elusive City, the Champion 2YO of Europe of his year and winner of the Group One Prix Morny, is owned in the southern hemisphere by a partnership which includes Cambridge Stud, Fairdale Stud, Haunui Farm and Trelawney Stud. He stood his first two seasons at Trelawney Stud and in 2006, was transferred to stand at Haunui Farm.

Elusive City’s first crop of yearlings were highly sought after in 2007 with ten selling for over $100,000 and a top price of $170,000 both in New Zealand and Australia whilst his second crop featured three six figure yearlings – all fillies. “The impact he made in the sale ring last year was quite remarkable,” said Mark. “The major factor coming through from buyers was that he “typed” his yearlings and in the yearling market, that can be quite significant,” he said. “His first crop obviously made an impression as buyers were all prepared to view his yearlings and the results speak for themselves,” he said. “He has a number of horses due to trial and race over the next few months and we’re looking forward to more results like this – Aqaleem is just the start,” said Mark.

Elusive City covered 90 mares at Haunui Farm last season and has returned to the Irish National Stud to begin his fourth Northern Hemisphere season.

Dashing Donna Impresses 18 Feb 2008
Dashing Donna (NZ) (Don Eduardo) gave her new owner Dominic Li something to smile about at Ellerslie on Saturday with a convincing performance over 1200m.

The winner of her first start by five-and-a-quarter lengths, Dashing Donna backed this up with a second in the Listed Carters-Gib Stakes (1400m) at Wanganui less than ten days later and was subsequently sold by her breeder and trainer Nigel Auret.

Transferred to the Logan and Gibbs stable, Dashing Donna returned to the track at Te Rapa in early February producing a gutsy effort to finish second over 1200m. Jumping quickly out of the gates on that occasion, she was caught wide for the entire trip running home strongly to get beaten only a nose. “I didn’t know what to expect from her,” said co-trainer Donna Logan. “She is such a relaxed filly at home and in her work, it’s a bit hard to get a line on her,” she said.

On that back of that performance, Dashing Donna started favourite at Ellerslie on Saturday and didn’t disappoint. Again quick out of the gates, jockey Leith Innes was able to get across the field from a wide draw and sit one off the fence in third position for most of the race. Making a run after straightening, Dashing Donna went to the lead at the 150m and the race was never in doubt. “She did it easily,” said jockey Leith Innes to connections after the race.

Dashing Donna will more than likely line up over the Auckland Cup Week Carnival and will then head toward the Group One Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1600m) adding her name to the list of big-race contenders from the first crop of her sire, Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel).

Don Eduardo already has a Derby favourite in the form of Il Divo (NZ) whilst Divine Rebel (NZ) (Don Eduardo) will head toward the New Zealand Oaks and on the other side of the Tasman, Najib (Aus) (Don Eduardo) is on the AJC Derby trail, the same race won by his father some six years ago.

Serious Oaks Prospect for Don Eduardo 15 Feb 2008
With Il Divo (NZ) (Don Eduardo) headed for the Mercedes Derby and Najib (Aus) (Don Eduardo) headed for the AJC Derby, Haunui stallion Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel) is also set to be represented in the New Zealand Oaks by the Mike and Paul Moroney-trained Divine Rebel (NZ).

An impressive winner at Ellerslie’s Twilight meeting on Wednesday after three seconds in-a-row, Divine Rebel finished a comfortable length ahead of her closest rival over the 2100m but according to co-trainer Paul Moroney, the filly still has a lot to learn on the track.

“It was certainly a nice win but you could see when she hit the lead, she didn’t really know what to do,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “Paul is very happy with her and she is heading to the Oaks which is very exciting for Don Eduardo,” he said. “His progeny are really starting to hit their straps so hopefully one of his progeny will be able to emulate his feat in winning a classic,” says Mark.

Saturday will see Don Eduardo represented by three runners at Ellerslie in the form of Diplomatic, Dashing Donna and Il Divo who will start as one of the favourites in the feature event on the card, the Group Two Championship Stakes (2100m).

Diplomatic can hopefully get the day off to a good start for his sire lining up in the second event on the Ellerslie card over a mile. Trained by Bruce Wallace, Diplomatic ran a very impressive third behind Dame Erin (NZ) (Minardi) and Divine Rebel two starts back after jumping and going to the lead, and fighting on strongly in the run home.

Dashing Donna, now racing from the Logan and Gibbs stable, returned to the track two weeks ago with a gutsy performance over 1200m at Te Rapa. With that being her first start since early September, she will undoubtedly have taken a lot of improvement out of it and with top jockey Leith Innes once again engaged to ride, the black filly will be right in the mix at the end of the 1200m trip.

Il Divo was earmarked by his trainer John Sargent as a Derby contender from day one and tomorrow is just another step in that direction and will be his final lead up to the main event. Very narrowly beaten in the Group Three Waikato Guineas (2000m) at Te Rapa two weeks ago, Il Divo also ran second in the Group Two Great Northern Guineas at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. To win the Mercedes Derby, a horse needs to be able to handle the Ellerslie track and with a win and two very close seconds under his belt at Ellerslie, Il Divo has the jump of many of his rivals in that department.

Another Close One for Onceuponatime 11 Feb 2008
Onceuponatime (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) is proving himself to be a very tough competitor in Singapore beaten into second by yet another narrow margin at Kranji on Friday night.

Drawn barrier one in the SIN-G3 Three Rings Trophy (1400m), Onceuponatime settled at the rear of the field and had to make his way to the outside turning for home. Ridden hands and heels to the 200m by jockey Danny Beasley, Onceuponatime hit the lead at the 100m mark only to be beaten a nose by race favourite Top Spin (Aus) (Arena) who hugged the rails in the run home saving what proved to be valuable ground in the tight finish.

Onceuponatime’s last three starts have all been in stakes company and on Friday, he was once again pitted against the older horses over the 1400m trip. Crowned Champion Juvenile of Singapore last season, he has definitely franked that form in the current season and looks set to become one of Singapore’s leading lights.

Bred by Haunui Farm and Jim Otway, Onceuponatime is out of the Group Two-winner Scarlet Runner (NZ) (Kingdom Bay). Sold by Haunui at the 2006 Ready-to-Run Sale, he was purchased by Singapore trainer David Hill for $60,000. The David Hill stable will have another Van Nistelrooy colt join the ranks in the near future after one of David’s clients Dr Omie Rangabashyam paid $200,000 for a Van Nistelrooy colt out of Haunui’s 2008 Select Yearling Draft.

Group One Glory for Haunui Graduate 11 Feb 2008
Yet another Group One winner can be added to the Haunui Graduates table with the victory of Mission Critical (Aus) (Fantastic Light) in the Group One WRC Whakanui Internationla Stakes (2000m) at Te Rapa on Saturday leaving six- time Group One-winner Sir Slick (NZ) (Volksraad) in his wake.

Bred by Darley, Australia, Mission Critical was sent to New Zealand as a youngster to undertake his yearling preparation at Haunui Farm and was sold on behalf of Darley, Australia at the 2006 Karaka Premier Sale.

Purchased by Paul Moroney for $75,000, Mission Critical was already stakes placed before Saturday, finishing second in the Group Three WRC Wellington Stakes (1600m). With Saturday’s performance, his odds have shortened remarkably for the Group One Mercedes Derby (2400m) to be held at Ellerslie on the 1st of March and undoubtedly, he has staked his claim to be a leading contender.

Mission Critical’s win on Saturday made him Group One Graduate number eight for Haunui Farm over the last three years joining the likes of Mikki Street (NZ) (Cape Cross), Gallic (NZ) (Zabeel), Art Success (NZ) (Pentire), Perlin (NZ) (Carnegie), Railings (Aus) (Zabeel), Calveen (NZ) (Canny Lad) and My Royal Captain (NZ) (Zabeel).

Mission Critical Adds Name to Stakes Performers Tally 22 Jan 2008
Haunui Farm graduate Mission Critical (Aus) (Fantastic Light) gave every indication he is on the right track for a tilt at the Group One Mercedes Derby (2400m) on the 1st of March with a solid performance in the Group Three Wellington Stakes (1600m) on Saturday.

Setting the pace, Mission Critical fought strongly to finish second behind Alamosa (NZ) (O’Reilly). After running fifth and fourth in the Group Two Avondale Guineas (1600m) and Group Two Great Northern Guineas (1600m) respectively, Mission Critical has proved he is among this season’s leading three-year-olds and the extra 800m of the Derby trip look certain to be right up his ally.

Trained by Mike and Paul Moroney, Mission Critical was purchased by Paul Moroney for $75,000 from Haunui’s Premier Draft. He was sold by Haunui on behalf of Darley, Australia.

In Singapore, Onceuponatime (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) continued his rise up the ranks with a second placing in the SIN-G3 Three-Year-Old Sprint (1200m) this past Saturday.

As a two-year-old, Onceuponatime claimed the status of Champion Juvenile with victory in the SIN-G3 Magic Millions Juvenile Championship (1200m) and followed this up in the new season with two victories against the older horses in his first two starts.

In his last start, Onceuponatime was beaten just a nose in the SIN-G3 Stewards’ Cup (1400m) by Big Maverick (NZ) (O’Reilly) after an interrupted run up the straight and went down by yet another narrow margin when beaten a neck by Oneninetyfive (Aus) (Blevic) this weekend.

Onceuponatime is a graduate of Haunui’s 2006 Ready-to-Run Draft where he was purchased by trainer David Hill for $60,000.

Over the last three years, 27 Haunui graduates have performed at black type level including seven Group One winners.

Haunui Well Represented in Black Type Racing 17 Jan 2008
This weekend will see three Haunui graduates line up in stakes races around New Zealand – two at Trentham and one at Gore.

Mission Critical (Aus) (Fantastic Light) will line up in Saturday’s Wellington Stakes (1600m) and going on recent form, should be right in the money at the end of the Group Three event. Trained by Michael and Paul Moroney, Mission Critical has put in two impressive performances at black type level in the last six weeks finishing fifth in the Group Two Avondale Guineas (1600m) and fourth in the Group Two Great Northern Guineas (2100m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day.

Sold from Haunui’s 2006 Premier Draft on behalf of Darley, Australia, Mission Critical was purchased by Paul Moroney for $75,000 and is one of two graduates from that sale purchased by Paul to be headed toward the Mercedes Derby, the other being One For The Money (NZ) (Pentire).

Another Haunui graduate aiming for a possible tilt at the Mercedes Derby is The Beastunleashed (NZ) (O’Reilly) who will tackle the Listed Gore Guineas (1355m) also to be run on Saturday.

An impressive winner in his first start, The Beastunleashed was bred by Marie Leicester and was purchased by Peter Williams for $80,000 again from our 2006 Premier Draft.

Solo Flight (NZ) (Stravinsky), a graduate of Haunui’s 2007 Premier draft will take her place in the field for the Ford Wakefield Challenge Stakes (1200m) at Trentham on Saturday to hopefully cement her spot in the field for New Zealand’s richest race, the Karaka Million (1200m), for which she is currently lying twelfth in the order of entry.

Solo Flight was purchased by Graeme Rogerson and Denise Howell’s Dormello Stud for $240,000 and is trained by Graeme Rogerson and Garry Newham. Haunui will offer a half sister to Solo Flight by Savabeel (NZ) (Zabeel) at the Karaka Premier Sale which will get underway in ten days time.

The last three years have once again seen Haunui graduates rise to the top with 26 stakes performers, among them, seven Group One winners. “It is certainly nice to sit down and do the stats and get these results,” says Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “This weekend there’s a good chance that another graduate could be added to our stakes performers list and that would be fantastic,” he said. “It would be great to add all three but that might be asking a bit too much!”

Lodovico Impressive on New Year's Day 3 Jan 2008
Lodovico (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) started the New Year in a similar fashion to how he ended 2007 with an impressive win at Hawke’s Bay on the 1st of January.

Piloted by Hayden Tinsley, Lodovico was caught wide early in the running but was eventually settled in behind the pacemaker Envee (NZ) (Green Perfume) for the 1600m journey. On the turn, he was quickly off the running rail and ridden hands and heals went up to eyeball the leader. After balancing, Tinsley gave Lodovico one crack of the whip behind the saddle and the big bay went to the lead easily, eventually eased down to win by a length.

Out of the Last Tycoon-mare Locomottee (NZ), Lodovico was bred by Haunui Farm and Marie Leicester and was sold from Haunui’s 2006 Select Draft. Purchased by Scott Richardson Bloodstock for $50,000, he is trained by Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott out of Wexford Stables and by all accounts, could be a possible Mercedes Derby contender come March.

In other sales news, Eagle Rock (NZ) (Galileo), another graduate of Haunui’s 2006 yearling draft, notched up his second win in Sydney on New Year’s Day, victorious over a mile at Royal Randwick for his trainer David Payne.

Out of the stakes winning imported mare American Cash (USA) (American Chance), Eagle Rock was bred by Don and Rochelle McLaren and was sold from Haunui’s Premier draft of 2006. He was purchased by Dominion Bloodstock for $100,000.

This year, Haunui will offer a half brother to Eagle Rock by One Cool Cat (USA) (Storm Cat) – Lot 479 in the Premier Session.

Haunui Yearlings On-line 3 Jan 2008
Haunui's 2008 Yearling Draft is now available for viewing on-line. Pedigree's and photos have been uploaded with video footage due to be uploaded in the next few days.

On farm inspections of our yearlings are welcome so please feel free to contact Mark - 021 663 995 - or Shannon - 0212 855 513 - if you would like to book a yearling parade prior to the sales at Karaka.

The Beastunleashed Off to a Good Start 31 Dec 2007
Three-year-old The Beastunleashed (NZ) (O’Reilly) got his racing career off to the right start last week winning on debut over 1200m at Otago on Boxing Day.

The first foal out of Dazzling Walk (NZ) (Zabeel), The Beast Unleashed was bred by long-time Haunui client Marie Leicester and was sold through the Haunui Premier draft at Karaka in 2006 for $80,000 to the bid of Peter Williams.

Dazzling Walk has a Black Minnaloushe (USA) filly at foot and is in foal to One Cool Cat (USA) (Storm Cat).

Marie will once again sell a select draft of yearlings in 2008 including a Stravinsky (USA) (Nureyev) colt out of Empress Belle (NZ) (Sir Tristram who will be offered at Karaka. A half brother to stakes performers Desert Rain (NZ) (Honor Grades), Tsarina Belle (NZ) (Stravinsky) and Housemaster (NZ) (Housebuster), he will undoubtedly attract his share of attention on the sales complex in late January.

Other yearlings to be sold by Marie in 2008 include a colt by Redoute’s Choice (Aus) (Danehill) out of multiple Group One-winner Coogee Walk (NZ) (Success Express), a Danzero (Aus) (Danehill) filly out of Diva Belle (NZ) (Carnegie) and a More Than Ready (USA) (Southern Halo) colt out of Liberty Walk (NZ) (Zabeel).

From The Spot Another Winner for Van Nistelrooy 29 Dec 2007
Boxing Day saw another impressive winner added to the tally of exciting young stallion Van Nistelrooy (USA) (Storm Cat).

From The Spot (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) put in a barnstorming run down the outside at Awapuni to nab victory in the shadows of the post breaking through for his maiden victory after coming close on three occasions.

Bred by Haunui Farm and client Christine Ramsay, From The Spot is the second foal out of La Buster (NZ) (Housebuster) representing the family of Fun On The Run (NZ) (Racing Is Fun), Tall Poppy (NZ) (Kaapstad) and Frenetic (NZ) (Truly Vain).

La Buster will be represented at Karaka 2008 by a colt by Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel).

Onceuponatime Just Misses in Stewards Cup 19 Dec 2007
Onceuponatime (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) came within a short head of taking out the SIN-G3 Stewards Cup (1400m) at Kranji on Sunday.

The winner of his first two starts this campaign, Onceuponatime started as race favourite and was in the unenviable position of being boxed in on the fence in the run home which made for a cluttered path to the finish line eventually going down to the Laurie Laxon-trained Big Maverick (NZ) (O’Reilly).

Onceuponatime will now be put aside for a spell with undoubtedly, the Singapore Derby high on the agenda for trainer David Hill in the new Singapore season.

Solo Flight on Track for Karaka Million 19 Dec 2007
Haunui graduate Solo Flight (NZ) (Stravinsky) put her best foot forward at Te Aroha today with a comfortable victory in the two-year-old event over 900m. Settling just outside the pacemaker with Lisa Cropp on board, when asked for an effort, the filly responded quickly to hit the lead and went on to a comfortable one-and-a-quarter length win.

Bred by Haunui Farm and Garry and Pauline Madill, Solo Flight is out of multiple Group One-winner Fayreform (NZ) (Tights) who from four live foals (her second foal died in Japan at two), has a 100% winners to runners record. A graduate of Haunui’s 2007 Karaka Premier draft, Solo Flight was purchased by Graeme Rogerson’s Dormello Stud for $240,000.

This year, Haunui Farm will offer a half sister to Solo Flight at the Karaka Premier Sale. By Savabeel (NZ) (Zabeel) she will enter the ring as Lot 112 on the first day of selling – January 28th.

Two races later at the same track, another Haunui graduate was to the fore in the form of Cavallo (NZ) (Almutawakel) who was piloted to victory in a tight finish over 1400m by Mark Sweeney, winning by a half head over Geordie Girl (NZ) (Towkay) with four lengths back to third place getter Red Square (NZ) (Danske).

Completing a Haunui graduate treble was Dartbolt (NZ) (O’Reilly) in Australia. Trained by Danny O’Brien, the four-year-old notched his third win today in taking out the St Razzle Handicap over a mile at Sandown.

Out of Scarlet Runner (NZ) (Kingdom Bay) Dartbolt is a half brother to Onceuponatime (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) – Singapore’s Champion Juvenile of last season.

Haunui Grads Win Two at Taranaki 13 Dec 2007
Haunui Farm graduates Mollington Grange (NZ) (Postponed) and Opportunity Knocks (NZ) (Traditionally) made the most of their opportunities at Opunake today.

The Allan Sharrock-trained Mollington Grange got things off to a good start with a handy three-quarters-of-a-length win over 1400m to break out of maiden ranks. Out of Spindrift (NZ) (Crested Wave), he was a $50,000 purchase by Allan Sharrock from Haunui’s 2005 Select Yearling Draft and is raced by Butch Glover, Bob Lovett with Allan also retaining a racing share.

With two starts under his belt, his first in November producing a second, Mollington Grange is held in high regard by his trainer and will no doubt feature in some nice summer races.

Opportunity Knocks carried the Haunui colours to victory for the third time in his career in race eight on the card at the same venue. Settling toward the rear of the field, he was asked for a big effort from about the 800m mark and hit the lead early in the straight. Looking like he would run away with the race, the big chestnut switched off slightly when out in front and held on narrowly to win be a head on the line.

Retained for racing by Haunui Farm and co-breeder Noel Robinson, Opportunity Knocks is trained by Mark Walker and from 16 starts has notched up four seconds and three thirds to go with his hat-trick of wins.

Haunui Grad Wins on Debut 7 Dec 2007
The numbers keep rising for the progeny of Van Nistelrooy with yet another impressive winner added to the list yesterday.

Haunui graduate Lodovico made light work of his rivals winning on debut over 1400m at Matamata. Galloping greenly, he ran out a confortable winner by one and a quarter lengths.

Out of Locomotee (NZ) (Last Tycoon), Lodovico was bred by Haunui and Marie Leicester and was sold from our 2006 draft to Scott Richardson for $50,000.

Il Divo en route to Mercedes Derby 4 Dec 2007
It may have come two days later than expected, but Il Divo (NZ) (Don Eduardo) lived up to expectations at Ellerslie yesterday running out the impressive winner of the three-year-old event on the card.

LEFT: DON EDUARDO - sire of Il Divo

A half brother to outstanding filly Naturo (NZ) (Postponed), Il Divo has always been held in high regard by his trainer, John Sargent and didn’t disappoint yesterday. “He’s a lovely horse,” said John. “I’ve always thought highly of him and it was a good win yesterday, he showed a turn of foot and quickened nicely,” he said.

A $100,000 purchase from the 2006 Karaka Select Sale, Il Divo will now head toward the Group Two Great Northern Guineas (2100m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day with his main target, the Group One Mercedes Derby (2400m) on the 1st of March 2008. “I will just keep him ticking over for the next three weeks until Boxing Day and then he will have another one or two starts before the Derby in March,” said John.

“It was good to see the horse win so well yesterday,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “We knew John has always had a high opinion of him and the horse came from the back of the field, got checked and still quickened to win well,” he said. “He was a $100,000 yearling and all going well, it looks as though he will certainly justify the price tag,” said Mark. “It’s great for Don Eduardo to have a horse already en route to the Derby and Dashing Donna is likely to be contesting some of the nicer fillies races of the Summer,” he said. “And hopefully, there will be a few more Don Eduardo’s lining up in those races as well!”

Don Eduardo is currently completing his fifth season at stud and has covered just over 80 mares in 2007 with a handful still to go. “He has certainly remained popular with breeders and the feedback we continually get back from trainers is nothing but positive,” said Mark. “Roll on Boxing Day and Derby Day!”

Onceuponatime Too Good Again 3 Dec 2007
Onceuponatime (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) has proved his class yet again in beating his older counterparts in Singapore this past weekend making it two from two in his three-year-old season.

Last season’s Champion Juvenile of Singapore after taking out the Group Three Magic Millions Juvenile Championship (1200m), Onceuponatime won over 1200m in his first start of the new season in early October and after a let-up by trainer David Hill, didn’t disappoint when he lined up over the slightly longer 1400m trip at Kranji on Sunday.

Ridden by Mark Gallagher, the big, strong chestnut looked the winner at the 150m mark but proved he still has a lot to learn. “That was nice,” said trainer David Hill. “He is still very green but is learning all the time,” he said.

Now the winner of four from six starts, Onceuponatime will now target the Stewards Cup in a few weeks time.

Haunui Grads Score in Hong Kong 27 Nov 2007
Racing in Hong Kong this past weekend proved successful for Haunui graduates with the first win of Bravo Bravo (NZ) (New Trumps). A big congratulations to Haunui client Richard Hui who stands New Trumps (Ire) (Cadeaux Genereux) privately at Haunui Farm, for the first winner by his stallion in Hong Kong. Bred by Richard Hui, the gelding is trained by David Hall for his owners Edmund Woo Kin Wai and Chow Kwock Chuen.

With his oldest crop four-year-olds and limited opportunity in the breeding shed – his largest book to date has been 24 mares – New Trumps’ progeny are certainly coming up “trumps” on the tracks of Asia with two winners in Macau in recent times as well. “It is a great result for Mr Hui and I’m sure he will be pleased to see the progeny of New Trumps winning at home in Hong Kong,” said Mark Chitty, General Manager of Haunui.

South China Elite (NZ) (Minardi) was the other Haunui graduate to prove successful at Sha Tin on Sunday and like Bravo Bravo, is also trained by David Hall. Bred by Bill and Barbi Gianotti, South China Elite was purchased by David Haworth for $44,000 from Haunui’s 2005 Karaka Select draft and was sold to Hong Kong as a three-year-old where he easily won his first start last December by three-and-a-half lengths. An injury has seen him off the track for a little longer than expected however he has quickly bounced back to form and it will be interesting to see where the strong grey heads to next.

Van Nistelrooy Gelding Tops Haunui RTR Draft 26 Nov 2007
As expected, the progeny of Van Nistelrooy (USA) (Storm Cat) were well sought after at the recent New Zealand Bloodstock Ready-to-Run Sale. Averaging just under $100,000 for five lots sold, a gelding by Van Nistelrooy was the top seller of Haunui’s draft of six, fetching $120,000 to the bid of NZB as agent for a Singapore client.

“It came as no surprise to see Singapore interests signing for the horse,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “Last year we sold a Van Nistelrooy from the same sale who turned out to be Onceuponatime, Champion Juvenile of Singapore,” he said.

The first day of selling saw Lot 60, a filly by Reset (Aus) (Zabeel) out of Coupon, a filly from the Haunui Farm foundation family, sold to Australians Ken and Wendy Baker for $60,000.

The second day of selling provided two nice results for Haunui with the Lloyd Williams team of John Peatfield and Graeme Rogerson purchasing Lot 337, a colt by Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel) for $61,000. “It’s great that the Williams team have purchased a Don Eduardo from us,” said Mark. “They have had some great success with Haunui graduates including Perlin and Gallic so hopefully they have bought another Group One-winner from the farm,” he said.

The last lot to be offered by Haunui was Lot 382, a colt by Desert Prince (Ire) (Green Desert) who was knocked down to the bid of John Morrissey for $87,500.

“As always, the nice horses stood out and there was strong competition for them,” said Mark. “This sale has a strong record for producing some outstanding racehorses so it will be interesting to see what comes out of this crop,” he said. “It’s also good to have the first major sale out of the way after the EI outbreak,” said Mark.

European Purchase Paying Dividends Already 5 Nov 2007
The Haunui broodmare band received another boost with the victory of two-year-old filly Modern Look (GB) (Zamindar) in the Group Three Prix Miesque (1400m). A daughter of Group One Cheveley Park Stakes-winner Prophecy (GB) (Warning), the filly is a half sister to Destined (GB) (Danehill) who joined the Haunui broodmare band last season and is owned in partnership with Cathy Franich.

Modern Look has now notched three wins-in-a-row from four starts and on Friday, showed her fighting spirit after being headed in the straight by second placed Lady Deauville (Fr) (Fasliyev) but fought back tenaciously to win by what in the end, was a comfortable two-and-a-half length margin.

Half-sister Destined produced her first foal this season, a bay colt by Galileo (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells) and is in foal to Zabeel (NZ) (Sir Tristram).

Another winner for Don Eduardo 3 Nov 2007
Vickezzchardonnay (NZ) (Don Eduardo) became winner number seven for her sire yesterday taking out the Te Akau Racing Stables (1600m) at Matamata in her fourth start.

Trained by Murray Baker at Cambridge, the three-year-old filly jumped out nicely from the gates and was settled just behind the leaders by jockey Michael Walker. Coming to the last turn, Vickezzchardonnay was traveling sweetly and took advantage of the rails run and held on nicely to win by a half length from race leader Keffiya (Aus) (Cape Cross).

Earlier this week, La Celestina (NZ) (Don Eduardo) opened her spring campaign with a smart second at Avondale. Trained by Stephen McKee, he remarked that the filly would take a great deal of improvement from the race and will be harder to beat at her next start.

Another winner for Don Eduardo in recent weeks has been Najib (Aus) who broke his maiden at Kyneton just on two weeks ago winning by seven lengths. So impressive was his performance, owners Gooree Park Stud and trainer Lee Freedman, were seriously considering a start in the VRC Derby however, with only three starts this campaign, the decision was taken to head toward the Listed Express Stakes (1800m) on Oaks Day instead.

“There are more and more Don Eduardo’s stepping out each week,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “He already has the stakes placed filly Dashing Donna and hopefully he will add to that tally through the deeds of Najib next week,” he said. “He has only had nineteen runners to date with seven individual winners so I guess that’s not a bad strike rate,” said Mark. “As the season rolls on there should be a lot more winners added to that tally,” he said.

Don Eduardo stands at Haunui Farm in 2007 for a service fee of $10,000 + GST. For more information, please feel free to contact Mark Chitty – 021 663 995 – or Shannon Taylor – 0212 855 513.

View the Haunui RTR Draft Online 2 Nov 2007
Haunui Farm’s Ready-to-Run draft has now been loaded onto the website. To view further details, please visit the SALES section of our website.

One of the most successful graduates to date of the 2006 Ready-to-Run Sale was the Haunui bred and sold Onceuponatime (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) who finished the season as Singapore’s Champion Juvenile after taking out the Group Three Magic Millions Championship (1200m). This season, he has already made a winning return to the track beating the older horses over 1200m in early October.

This year, the Haunui draft features another big, strong colt by Van Nistelrooy, Lot 106 out of the young Soviet Star (USA) (Nureyev) mare Filiouchka who impressed at the breeze-ups clocking a time of 10.35 with relative ease. Another Van Nistelrooy in the Haunui draft is Lot 189, a filly out of Lady Stanhope (NZ) (Sir Tristram). With the run of winners that Van Nistelrooy has been producing world-wide, his progeny are sure to be well sought after at the sale.

Lot 337 is a son of exciting young stallion Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel). A colt that has come along nicely during the preparation, he clocked a time of 10.35 for the 200m. Don Eduardo has been well represented in Singapore by Daring Eduardo (NZ) whilst in Australia he has the smart horse Najib (Aus) who after three starts was headed toward the VRC Derby (2500m) however upon further consideration, trainer Lee Freedman felt three starts wasn’t enough leading into one of Australasia’s toughest three-year-old races and instead, he is headed toward the Listed Express Stakes over 1800m on Oaks Day.

Also featured in the Haunui draft are a colt and filly by young sire Reset (Aus) (Zabeel). Lot 60 will be the first of the Haunui offering to enter the sale ring, a bay filly out of Coupon (NZ) (Carnegie), a member of the Haunui foundation family who has recently produced the stakes winning filly Valpolicella (NZ) (Red Ransom). This filly breezed up in a time of 10.58. Lot 132 is a chestnut gelding by Rest out of Granita (Aus) (Bigstone) whose first foal Dimension (NZ) (Carnegie) carried the Lloyd Williams colours to victory earlier this season. He breezed up in a time of 10.46.

The final lot to be offered by Haunui at this year’s Ready-to-Run sale is a colt by Desert Prince (Ire) (Green Desert) out of Zafonique (NZ) (Bigstone), a full sister to Group Two AJC Flight Stakes-winner Lady Mulan (NZ). Lot 382, he will be sold on the second day of the sale.

For more information on our Ready to Run draft, please feel free to contact Mark Chitty – 021 663 995 – or Shannon Taylor – 0212 855 513.

Gallic on His Way to The Cup 30 Oct 2007
Veteran galloper Gallic (NZ) (Zabeel) cemented his position as one of Australia’s leading stayers when taking out the Group Two Cathay Pacific Airways Cup (2500m) in fine fashion on Cox Plate day. The eight-year-old dealt a hefty blow to many of his younger rivals starting his run from toward the rear of the field and winning by a comfortable one-and-quarter length margin at the post.

Bred by Charlie Roberts and, Paul and Mary Kenny who breed under the Roberts Holdings banner, Gallic was sold through Haunui’s 2001 Premier yearling draft and was purchased by Lloyd Williams for $170,000.

Gallic is a horse that could be best described as being “as tough as nails” having overcome a broken pelvis and two bowed tendons to still be mixing it with the best on the track as an eight-year-old. Twice in his career, he has been sidelined for over twelve months due to injury and as a result, has become a stable favourite.

The Roberts Holdings team will be boarding a plane on Monday the 5th of November to take their place in the massive crowd to watch the race that stops a nation and everybody here at Haunui wishes them the best of luck along with the Lloyd Williams stable who will have three runners in the race – we just hope it’s Gallic who brings them home!

Daring Eduardo Strikes Again in Singapore 30 Oct 2007
Three-year-old gelding Daring Eduardo (NZ) (Don Eduardo) scored another impressive win in Singapore on Saturday to make it back-to-back wins for his trainer Mohd Yusof.

Lining up over 1400m, Daring Eduardo took up a position near the rails under jockey Danny Chee and was happy to stalk the leaders for most of the race. Turning for home, the pair stuck to the inside and soon hit the front holding out all challengers in the performance that according to reports displayed toughness and ability.

With Najib (Aus) (Don Eduardo) an impressive winner in Australia last week by seven-lengths and headed for some of the major three-year-old races of the Melbourne Spring, we are looking forward to seeing more of the progeny of Don Eduardo hitting the racetracks in the weeks ahead including the likes of stakes placed filly Dashing Donna who has some of the major fillies’ races of the Summer firmly marked on her agenda.

VRC Derby Contender for Don Eduardo 24 Oct 2007
Najib (Aus) (Don Eduardo) broke through for a commanding seven-length maiden victory at Kyneton yesterday.

Initially settling toward the rear of the field, rider Ben Melham took the initiative when the pace wasn’t to his liking and took Najib around the field and to the front with 800m to run. From there, victory looked assured and coming into the straight, Najib quickly put a margin between himself and the rest of the field and the way in which he stuck to the job at hand suggests he is a smart stayer in the making.

Before yesterday’s event, Najib was 44th in the order of entry for the Group One VRC Derby (2500m) and yesterday’s victory saw him climb to 15 with connections keen to push ahead with a Derby challenge. “He is a horse that has improved with each run and he definitely looks the type to stay the distance,” said Andrew Baddock, Manager of Gooree Park Stud who races Najib and of course owns his sire, Don Eduardo. “It would be fantastic for Don Eduardo to have a runner in the race and it is definitely where we are heading,” he said.

Don Eduardo’s oldest progeny are just three-year-olds and he already has a stakes performer in New Zealand in the form of Dashing Donna (NZ). An impressive winner of her first start, she was second in the Listed Carters-Gib Stakes (1400m) and has since been sold to Hong Kong interests and transferred to the stable of Donna and Dean Logan and, Chris Gibbs.

“It was an impressive effort by Najib yesterday,” said Haunui Farm’s Mark Chitty. “He has had four individual winners in Australia now and to have a horse heading for the VRC Derby is certainly exciting,” he said. “Lee Freedman knows what it takes to win those big races – he won the AJC Derby with Don Eduardo – and it would be a fantastic result for Gooree if the dream was to come to reality so soon,” says Mark.

Don Eduardo is currently standing his fifth season at stud in New Zealand, his third at Haunui Farm and is powering his way through a strong book of mares. “He has covered over 50 mares already and has received very good support from breeders this season,” said Mark. “He has had a number of trials winners and we will hopefully be seeing a few more hitting the tracks over the next few weeks,” he said.

Don Eduardo stands at Haunui Farm in 2007 for a service fee of $10,000 + GST. For more information please feel free to contact Shannon Taylor – 0212 855 513.

Elusive City Colt on Target for Wellesley Start 16 Oct 2007
Smart two-year-old Discretion (NZ) (Elusive City) showed that he is well on target for the Listed Wellesley Stakes (1000m) at Trentham in just under two weeks time with an impressive trials performance at Cambridge today.

Bouncing out of the barriers, the son of Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) went straight to the lead and won his 800m trial by a comfortable two lengths without any pressure. “He did it pretty easily,” said part-owner Jen Campin who was at the track to see the performance. “It’s all go for the Wellesley now and he looks to be a very smart type,” she said.

Discretion has faced the starter once in the first two-year-old event of the season at Wanganui. Finishing on strongly for an eye-catching fourth, he was given a week off by trainer Arron Tata of Cambridge and the Wellesley has always been on the agenda.

Elusive City’s oldest crop are two-year-olds in the Southern Hemisphere and he has already had a starter across the Tasman as well in the form of the David Hayes-trained Storm The Castle who, like Discretion, ran a very impressive fourth in his first start. Sold by Haunui at the Magic Millions Sale in January for A$170,000, Storm The Castle is a November foal so this gives some indication of the strong types that Elusive City leaves.

“As types we definitely expected to see a number of earlier two-year-olds by Elusive City and from the reports we’re getting from trainers, there are definitely some very promising ones around,” says Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “It would be nice to see Discretion line up in the Wellesley in a couple of weeks and hopefully he can measure up,” he said.

Elusive City is on track to serve a book of almost 100, if not more mares this season which goes to show the recognition that breeders have given to the types of horses he has left. “We keep getting bookings to the horse all the time so he has obviously made the right impression,” said Mark. “His yearlings sold well here and are in high demand in the Northern Hemisphere as well so it looks as though we have an exciting stallion proposition on our hands,” he said, “but, we obviously need to get the race results on the board,” said Mark.

Elusive City stands for a fee of $8,000 + GST this season. For more information, please feel free to contact Shannon Taylor at the Haunui office or on mobile – 0212 855 513.

Notable Arrivals 12 Oct 2007
Foals are arriving thick and fast at Haunui now with more than forty of the 120 or more that we are expecting this season.

The Haunui foundation family has three new foals on the ground. Group One-performer Octapussy (Aus) (Octagonal) welcomed the arrival of her first foal on the 20th of September, a bay colt by multiple Group One-winner and exciting freshman sire Exceed and Excel (Aus) (Danehill).

LEFT: The Exceed And Excel colt out of Octapussy

On the same day Muscatel (NZ) (Kaapstad), a daughter of On The Rise (NZ) (Crested Wave) foaled a filly by Pins (Aus) (Snippets) whilst the last weekend in September saw the arrival of a half sister to stakes winner Valpolicella (NZ) (Red Ransom) out of Riesling (NZ) (Last Tycoon), herself a half sister to Octapussy. By Zabeel (NZ) (Sir Tristram), the filly has a big future ahead of her.

“We’re are lucky in that we have a great foaling team here at Haunui,” says General Manager Mark Chitty. “Keith Konn, our Broodmare and Breeding Operations Manager does a great job in organising the 24 hour watch of the foaling mares and whilst there is always the odd complication during the season, clients can be assured that their mares waiting to foal, are in very good hands,” he said.

Another Six-Figure Yearling for Elusive City 12 Oct 2007
Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) yearlings’ are still on hot demand in the Northern Hemisphere with the Tattersall’s sale yet again highlighting the fantastic results that breeders have attained through selling progeny of the Group One Prix Morny-winner.

With four yearlings catalogued at Tattersall’s October sale, Elusive City has notched up yet another six figure yearling with Angus Gold, acting of behalf of Shadwell Estates, bidding €100,000 for a bay colt out of the young mare Allegorica (Ire) (Alzao) – herself a winner at two and the dam of two winners already. This brings the tally of Elusive City yearlings purchased by Angus in 2007 to four.

Standing at a fee of $8,000 in both hemispheres, the young sire has made a great start to his career in the yearling sales ring with buyers remarking what a dominant sire Elusive City is.

With his oldest progeny in the Southern Hemisphere currently two-year-olds, Elusive City has had two starters to date, one in New Zealand and one in Australia, with both horses turning in impressive efforts for fourth.

Dashing Donna Sold to Hong Kong Interests 12 Oct 2007
Smart filly Dashing Donna (NZ) (Don Eduardo) has been sold to Hong Kong interests in the past ten days and has made the trip north to the Ruakaka base of Donna and Dean Logan and Chris Gibbs. “When my owner rang me to ask me if we would like to train another horse for him, he said ‘I think we might have a bit of fun with this one, wait until you hear the name,’ so we are looking forward to some fun times ahead,” said Donna Logan.

An impressive winner in her first start by five-and-a-quarter lengths, the three-year-old filly stepped out ten days later in the Listed Carters-Gib Stakes (1400m) running second to Special Mission (NZ) (Towkay). With nominations for the Group One 1000 Guineas (1600m) and the Group One Levin Classic (1600m), she hasn’t been seen on the racetrack since.

“I think we will probably head more toward the Levin Classic with her,” said new trainer Donna Logan today. “She is a lovely filly and I just can’t get over the great temperament she has – all of the Don Eduardo’s we’ve got have fantastic temperaments,” she said.

The Lee Freedman-stable are lining up impressive last-start performer Najib (Aus) (Don Eduardo) at Moonee Valley tonight, stepping the gelding up to city class on the back of an impressive first-up second at Bendigo over 1400mtwo weeks ago.

“It is certainly big news that Dashing Donna has been sold to Hong Kong interests and just goes to show that people are keeping a close eye on his progeny,” said Haunui Farm’s Mark Chitty. “He had another filly win at the trials this week – La Celestina – and we’ll be watching the tele with interest tonight and tomorrow to follow Najib and Il Divo,” he said.

Bookings for Don Eduardo continue to come rolling in. “With a number of stallions taken out of the mix this season due to EI, I think there are still a lot of breeders out there with later foaling mares that are just sitting and waiting to see what the Spring throws up,” said Mark. “The talk about the Don Eduardo’s is certainly very pleasing and I’m sure there are some big results that will be coming his way in the months ahead,” says Mark.

Don Eduardo stands for a fee of $10,000 + GST this season. For more information please feel free to contact Mark Chitty – 021 663 995 – or Shannon Taylor – 0212 855 513.

Another Select RTR Draft for Haunui 11 Oct 2007
Haunui Farm graduate Onceuponatime (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) is arguably one of the most successful Ready-to-Run Sale graduates of recent times and once again in 2007, Haunui will be offering a small but select draft of Ready-to-Run horses through the New Zealand Bloodstock auction ring.

Among the draft of six are two, two-year-olds – a gelding and a filly - by exciting young sire Van Nistelrooy (USA) (Storm Cat) whose progeny have been enjoying such great success on racetracks around the world in recent times. Last year, Onceuponatime was a $60,000 purchase by Singapore trainer David Hill from the draft of Haunui and last season, he was crowned Champion Juvenile of Singapore and just last week, beat the older horses over 1200m in his first start back from a short spell. Lot 106 is a gelding out of the young Soviet Star (USA) (Nureyev) mare Filiouchka whilst Lot 189 is a filly out of the Sir Tristram-mare Lady Stanhope (NZ).

The Haunui draft also features a gelding and filly by dual Group One-winner Reset (Aus) (Zabeel). Lot 132 is a gelding out of Granita (NZ) (Bigstone) from the family of stakes winner Rohatyn (NZ) (Carnegie) while Lot 60 is a filly out of Coupon (Aus) (Carnegie), a member of Haunui’s foundation family which offers some nice residual value after her racing career.

Rounding out the Haunui draft are two colts, one by Don Eduardo (NZ) (Sir Tristram) and the other by Desert Prince (Ire) (Green Desert). In 2006, sons of Don Eduardo featured prominently at Ready-to-Run, a colt out of Miss Rory (Aus) (Rory’s Jester) selling for $190,000 and another out of Straight Lane (NZ) (Straight Strike) fetching $120,000. The colt out of Straight Lane won his first trial as a two-year-old impressively and has since been exported to Hong Kong whilst a colt out of Dolcezza won his second start in Singapore named Daring Eduardo (NZ).

“We always take a small, select draft through to the Ready-to-Run Sale and last year sold Onceuponatime out of the draft so hopefully that gives buyers confidence in the horses we are presenting,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “We have a nice line-up once again this year and they are ready to breeze-up at Te Rapa on the 25th of October,” he said.

You can view the Ready-to-Run draft by visiting the SALES section of the website. Photos of the horses will be uploaded at the end of October.

For more information on any of the horses, please feel free to contact either Mark Chitty - 021 663 995 - or Shannon Taylor - 0212 855 513.

Two Starters for Elusive City 10 Oct 2007
Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) made a flying start to his career as a stallion in the yearling sale ring with ten of his progeny topping the $100,000 mark at the yearling sales in 2007.

With the start of the new season, we have seen just two of his progeny hit the track so far, Discretion (NZ) in New Zealand for Cambridge-based Arron Tata and Storm The Castle (NZ) in Australia for the stable of David Hayes.

LEFT: Storm The Castle as a yearling. He was sold from the 2007 Haunui Magic Millions Draft for A$170,000 to Mark Pilkington for the stable of David Hayes.

Both horses have run with little luck and both have shown a good turn of foot to storm home with impressive runs, albeit for fourth. Going by their first-up efforts, it would definitely pay to have these two colts in the back of your mind when they next appear at a racecourse and in discussions with trainers over the last two weeks about the Elusive City progeny in their stables, we are looking forward to seeing more of them in the months ahead.
On track to serve over 100 mares in his fourth season at stud, Elusive City is proving very popular with breeders.

Standing at $8,000 + GST, he provides every opportunity for breeders to make a solid return should they decide to sell through the sale ring.

Onceuponatime Returns in Winning Form 10 Oct 2007
Van Nistelrooy (USA) (Storm Cat) has continued to roll out the winners in both hemispheres since the beginning of the new season. Already the sire of a Grade One winner in the USA, a Group Two winner in England, a Group Three winner in Singapore and multiple stakes performers, the first week of October has seen a winning return to the track for Singapore’s Champion Juvenile Onceuponatime (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) along with four more stakes results to add to Van Nistelrooy’s tally.

Onceuponatime (outer) victorious in his first start this season against the older horses

Onceuponatime (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) became his sire’s first stakes winner in the Southern Hemisphere toward the end of last season when he took out the SIN-G3 Magic Millions Juvenile Championship (1200m). Friday saw him make a winning return to the track at Kranji after a short spell. Racing over 1200m against the older horses, Onceuponatime impressed his trainer David Hill enough for him to state after the race, “before tonight I thought he was a fair horse, now I think he’s a very, very good horse.” Purchased for $60,000 from Haunui’s 2006 Ready-to-Run draft by his trainer, Onceuponatime has faced the starter on five occasions with three wins and two thirds to his credit and is definitely in credit with over SIN$185,000 on the bank.

“It is certainly great to see Onceuponatime return to the track in winning form,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “I saw the horse when I was up in Singapore last month and he is such a big, strong, relaxed individual,” says Mark. “He has obviously impressed with his effort and hopefully there will be some nice successes ahead, especially in the bigger races toward the end of the season,” said Mark.

Boundless (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) became her sire’s second stakes performer in New Zealand on the 29th of September, running on late for third in the Listed Soliloquy Stakes (1400m) behind the smart fillies Lovetrista (NZ) (Rock Of Gibraltar) and Keepa Cruisin (NZ) (Keeper).

Another stand-out performer of Van Nistelrooy’s first Southern Hemisphere crop has been the Peter Moody-trained Pit Lane (NZ). The winner of three in-a-row as a two-year-old, the chestnut colt finished second in his first start this preparation and lined up at Flemington on Saturday in the Listed VRC Concept Sports Stakes (1400m). Settling in mid-field, Pit Lane was momentarily boxed-in in the run home but once in the clear, finished the race out strongly to claim third and become the first stakes performer for his sire in Australia. “I was very pleased with his run on Saturday and he’ll go forward to the Caulfield Guineas with the blinkers back on,” says Peter Moody.

In the Northern Hemisphere, Group Two-winner Strike The Deal (USA) (Van Nistelrooy) franked his form by finishing second in the Group One Middlepark Stakes (1200m) at Newmarket on Friday whilst two-year-old filly Raymi Coya (CAN) (Van Nistelrooy) added to her stakes placing in the Listed Dick Poole Fillies Stakes (1200m) with victory in the Group Three Oh So Sharp Stakes (1400m) at Newmarket the following day to become Van Nistelrooy’s fourth stakes winner from his first Northern Hemisphere crop.

“Van Nistelrooy seems to be flying in both Hemisphere’s,” said Mark. “Getting a stakes performer in Australia in the Spring is a big step forward and the next thing is to obviously add to his tally of stakes winners with some strong performers down here,” says Mark. “His progeny won three trials at Taupo yesterday so they appear to be on the right track and we’ll look forward to seeing them hit the tracks in the coming weeks,” said Mark.

Don Eduardo Strikes in Singapore 25 Sep 2007
Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel) has notched up another winner in September, this time in Singapore through the deeds of promising maiden winner Daring Eduardo (NZ).

The three-year-old stamped his authority over the field with an easy three length win in only his second start and could be one to follow as the season rolls on.

Daring Eduardo became winner number three in the last four weeks for his young sire after the deeds of Dashing Donna (NZ) in New Zealand and Latif (NZ) in Australia.

"Don Eduardo has now sired five winners and they've all won before he won himself as a racehorse," said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. "They've won at 900m, 1000m, 1200m and only one has won over a mile so it's pleasing to see that he is leaving horses that are perhaps more precocious than he was himself," said Mark.

Don Eduardo has also had further success on the trials track with Diplomatic (NZ) winning his heat over 850m at Waipa last week.

"He's had a good number of trials performers and with the better tracks coming, we're looking forward to seeing a few more Don Eduardo's saluting the judge," said Mark.

Don Eduardo stands at Haunui Farm in 2007 for a fee of NZ$10,000 + GST. For more information, please feel free to contact Shannon Taylor at the Haunui office on 09 530 8736 or on mobile 0212 855 513.

Iffraaj Update - 18/09 18 Sep 2007
It has been a little while since our last update and until this past Friday, we thought we were getting closer to being in the clear.

On Friday 14th of September we received an email from IRT stating that AQIS had confirmed a new case of EI at the Eastern Creek Quarantine Station from swabs taken on Friday, 7th September. This is obviously not the news we were hoping for and it has very serious ramifications in regard to being able to get Iffraaj to New Zealand. Until Friday, we had been working to an early October release date for Iffraaj from ECQS however with this further outbreak, there is going to be yet another delay and as yet, we still have no further information from New Zealand Bio-security in regard to quarantine periods that will be imposed on horses coming to New Zealand from Australia.

With this in mind, it is looking likely that we will not be able to get Iffraaj to New Zealand at a time that will have any benefit for the 2007 breeding season.

With our General Manager Mark Chitty currently in Singapore, we will be looking to make an official announcement in regard to Iffraaj on Thursday, 20th September. In the meantime, if you have any concerns, queries or, would like to discuss sending your mare to either Don Eduardo or Elusive City, please feel free to contact Shannon at the Haunui office on 09 530 8736 or on mobile 0212 855 513.

Dashing Donna Stakes Placed 10 Sep 2007
Dashing Donna (NZ) (Don Eduardo), the winner of her first start by five-and-a-quarter lengths, put up a very creditable performance at Wanganui on Saturday in the Listed Carters-Gib Stakes (1200m) finishing second to the unbeaten filly Special Mission (NZ) (Towkay) – the winner of the Listed Ryder Stakes (1200m) at Levin in her last start.

Ridden by Lisa Cropp, Dashing Donna jumped quickly and was caught wide early before being pushed to the front. Settling well, the filly lead the field into the home turn and kicked away nicely in the straight giving favourite Special Mission a target to run down. In a meritorious performance, Dashing Donna was beaten two lengths with a further two lengths to the third-placed Keepa Cruisin (NZ) (Keeper), to become Don Eduardo’s first stakes performer.

“It was certainly a great effort in only her second start and she showed that she can make the step-up in class,” said Mark Chitty, General Manager of Haunui Farm. “She still has a lot of racing ahead of her and she really set the race up for the other filly,” he said. “It was only her second start and we can only hope that she pulls up well for Nigel and we might see her in some of the other nice races this Spring,” says Mark.

Less than five minutes later, another daughter of Don Eduardo was to the fore in Australia wearing the well-known colours of her owner and breeder, Gooree Park Stud. In just her second start, Latif (Aus) proved too good for her rivals over a mile at Warwick Farm and if not for the Equine Influenza outbreak in New South Wales, could well have been a contender in some of the nice Spring races for fillies.

“She had only had the one start before this race and showed her greenness by lugging in in the run home,” said Gooree Park’s General Manager Andrew Baddock. “She is a very big filly and I thought she might have taken a bit more time but she’s strong and keeps doing everything right,” he said. “We’re not too sure where she will go from here, it all just depends on the races they can programme in New South Wales in the weeks ahead and also, how she pulls up after this race,” he said.

Don Eduardo has commenced his fifth season at stud, his third at Haunui Farm, in 2007. He stands at a fee of NZ$10,000 + GST and for further information, please contact Shannon Taylor on 09 530 8736 or on mobile 0212 855 513.

Elusive City Yearlings Sell well above Average at Tattersalls 10 Sep 2007
Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) yearlings continue to be in high demand in the Northern Hemisphere as the yearling sales season moved to Tattersall’s in Ireland last week.

In what was reported by Tattersall’s as a slightly disappointing sale with a sale average of just €19,000, it was certainly pleasing to see that progeny of Elusive City were in high demand with a top price of €80,000 and an average of just over €30,000 for his four lots sold.

“Elusive City’s progeny are proving very popular among buyers in both hemisphere’s,” said Mark Chitty, General Manager of Haunui Farm. “They sold well in the Northern Hemisphere as weanlings and obviously created enough of an impression for the demand to follow through as yearlings,” he said. “He’s also just completed serving his largest book of 165 mares in his third season at stud up there so that is saying a lot,” says Mark. “Irish breeders have really taken to him,” said Mark, “and so far in both hemisphere’s, his sales results are providing breeders with plenty of change in their pockets and those are the results that we are after,” he said.

Elusive City had his first runner in New Zealand in the Ford 2YO (800m) – the first two-year-old race of the season. Running on very strongly from mid-field, he finished fourth in what was a blanket photo finish for third, fourth and, fifth with commentator Tony Lee commenting that he was finishing “the best of them all.”

“It’s certainly pleasing to see he has left progeny forward enough to start in the first two-year-old race of the season,” says Mark. “With the comments we keep getting from trainers, I think we might have a nice season to look forward to with this stallion,” he said.

Elusive City stands at a fee of NZ$8,000 + GST. For further information please contact Shannon Taylor – 0212 855 513.

First Starter for Elusive City 7 Sep 2007
Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) will have his first starter at Wanganui tomorrow when the two-year-old colt Discretion (NZ) lines up in the Ford 2YO over 800m.

The first race of the season for two-year-olds, all starters come in with trials form only and this colt has impressed in his two trial appearances for trainer Arran Tata of Cambridge, running second on both occasions without being put under too much pressure.

Drawn barrier two and with experienced jockey Bruce Herd aboard, Discretion should have every opportunity to put his best foot forward – hears hoping!

Dashing Donna in Listed Race 7 Sep 2007
After impressing in her first start, Dashing Donna (NZ) (Don Eduardo) will line up in the Listed Carters-Gib Stakes (1200m) for three-year-old fillies at Wanganui tomorrow.

The filly, trained, part-owned and bred by Nigel Auret, showed a clean pair of heels at Foxton at the end of August with a five-and-a-quarter length victory and tomorrow, we’ll be hoping she can become the first stakes performer for her sire, Don Eduardo.

“It’s certainly exciting to see the filly lining up in a stakes race,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “Getting some early points on the board would be a great result and she looks to be a talented filly,” he said.

Drawn nicely at barrier three, Dashing Donna has Lisa Cropp on board and will hopefully get every chance in the race. Be watching at 1.55pm!

Iffraaj Update 06/09 6 Sep 2007
Following on from our update on Monday in regard to the status of Iffraaj and his pending arrival to New Zealand, we have received another report from IRT last night with the following update:

"AQIS have confirmed they plan to swab each horse in Sydney quarantine every Tuesday and take a swab and bloods every Friday in an endeavour to establish the EI status for the horses at Eastern Creek.

This information has only been provided verbally as we are awaiting written confirmation from AQIS. AQIS has also undertaken to provide IRT with a situation update three times a week."

As reported on Monday, the last stallion received his final treatment for EI on Sunday the 2nd of September therefore, following the AUSVETPLAN being actioned by AQIS, as long as there is no further outbreak among the horses at Eastern Creek, it is expected they will be released from quarantine on the 2nd of October. Once again, we are still awaiting confirmation from New Zealand MAF officials in regard to quarantine restrictions that will be imposed upon arrival to New Zealand however, we are optimistic that Iffraaj will be at Haunui in the middle of October.

We will continue to post updates as more information comes to hand but obviously the next five days are critical in terms of stemming the EI outbreak among the horses at Eastern Creek and if they can get through that period, the picture will hopefully brighten from there.

Iffraaj Update - 03/09 3 Sep 2007
This past week has seen some statements made in the media that have set alarm bells ringing in both the Australian and New Zealand thoroughbred breeding industries however, this morning we have received an email from IRT which has gone some way to brightening the prospects for the stallions currently detained in Sydney’s Eastern Creek Quarantine facility.

From IRT:

“Sydney Quarantine - We now have confirmation from AQIS that 5 horses were returned as positive to EI from swabs collected on 20 August. In addition 4 horses were returned as positive from swabs collected on 24 August - two of which were amongst the horses swabbed on 20 August. So at this stage 7 horses have swabbed positive to EI.

Since Sunday 2 September no horse has been under veterinary treatment so according to the AUSVET Plan, release should be on Tuesday 2nd October. This is, of course, dependent upon no further horse requiring treatment & confirmation from AQIS.

Should there still be a movement order in place in NSW once release is given, it would be anticipated that AQIS would work with the DPI in NSW to allow delivery of these stallions to their final destinations.”

As stated in our updates last week, we have been awaiting confirmation from AQIS in regard to the statements made about the increasing delays impeded on the stallions in quarantine, particularly those in Eastern Creek.

We will be posting further information as it comes to hand and as always, feel free to give either Mark or Shannon a call to discuss things further.

Iffraaj Update - 31/08 31 Aug 2007
As of late this afternoon, we have no further updates available in regard to the status of the stallions based at the Eastern Creek Quarantine Centre in Australia.

This is obviously a very frustrating time for everyone involved and as soon we have further confirmation in regard to statements made earlier this week by NSW Chief Veterinary Officer Mr Bruce Christie, we will post another update.

Elusive City's Liked by Angus Gold 31 Aug 2007
International Bloodstock agent Angus Gold is well known for having the budget and the ability to purchase the best bloodstock available in the world, after all, he’s responsible for the purchase of all yearlings and racehorses for Shadwell Stud.

This past week, Angus added two further Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) yearlings to his tally for the year when successfully bidding for two colts at the Doncaster Sale in England.

The first was a colt out of Justine Au Jardin (USA) (Black Tie Affair) for which he paid 44,000 guineas and the second was another colt out of Nagida (GB) (Skyliner) that he went to 42,000 guineas to secure. These two colts make a total of three Elusive City yearlings purchased by Angus Gold for Shadwell Stud this year, the first being the $150,000 colt out of Carmel Valley (Aus) (Last Tycoon) that he secured from the draft of Trelawney Stud at Karaka 2007.

It has been a successful month for Elusive City in the Northern Hemisphere yearling sales rings with his first yearlings averaging over €100,000 at Deauville just last week with prices of €220,000, €110,000, €75,000, €72,000 and €52,000 for his five lots sold - his average of €105,400 being just over 13 times his Northern Hemisphere service fee of €8,000.

“It is certainly pleasing to see one of the best in the business purchasing yearlings by Elusive City in both hemispheres,” said Haunui Farm’s General Manager, Mark Chitty. “It gives us and our partner’s great confidence to hear the comments of agents such as Angus and it shows that he must be pleased with the reports on the Elusive City colt he purchased at Karaka earlier in the year,” he said.

Elusive City’s first crop of yearlings were very popular in the Southern Hemisphere earlier this year starting at the Magic Millions where his one and only colt fetched A$170,000 to the bid of Mark Pilkington for the stable of David Hayes. This team paired up again at Karaka to purchase the colt the filly out of Star (Aus) (Danehill) for $100,000. “Having three Elusive City’s in one of the best stables in Australia is certainly a bonus,” said Mark “as David Hayes is also the trainer for Shadwell in Australia,” he said. “Elusive City’s got two-year-olds in the stables of Roger James, Gerald Ryan, Bart Cummings, Mark Walker, David Hayes, Brian Jenkins, Mike Moroney, Karen Zimmerman, Lisa Latta and John Hawkes so you couldn’t ask for a better opportunity for a stallion to kick start his career,” says Mark.

With his first Southern Hemisphere crop now two-year-olds, Elusive City is heading into his fourth season at stud in New Zealand and stands at a fee of $8,000 + GST. For further information please feel free to contact Shannon Taylor – 0212 855 513 – or Mark Chitty – 021 663 995.

Dashing Donna Deals to them at Foxton 30 Aug 2007
After the events of the past week, there was some loud cheering from the Haunui offices as Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel) filly Dashing Donna (NZ) blitzed her rivals by five-and-a-quarter lengths over 1200m at Foxton this afternoon.

Bred, owned and trained by Nigel Auret, the almost black filly has shown plenty of potential in her two trial outings winning both easily – one at two and the other as a three-year-old last week – and went out with jockey Michael Walker on board as the hot favourite.

To quote racecaller Tony Lee, Dashing Donna “flew the gates” to lead early and then took a nice trail behind Ima Akbar (NZ) (Al Akbar). With a rails run coming into the turn, the filly was in front after straightening and dashed clear of the field with daylight to the second-placed Ima Akbar at the post – it may have been more than a five-and-a-quarter length margin for not running about in the run home.

“She has always been a nice filly,” said trainer Nigel Auret. “We thought we would just line her up today to get a line on her and she won very nicely,” he said. “She’s a very relaxed filly and you wouldn’t think she has had a race today,” he said. “We’ll be looking to step her up to the next level but we’ll just see how she pulls up over the next few days and then take things from there,” said Nigel.

Don Eduardo is about to commence serving duties in the next few days at Haunui Farm and the win couldn’t have come at a better time. “It’s always nice to see horses winning like that,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “This filly has impressed in both her trials so I guess she was expected to perform today and she surely did,” said Mark. “It’s as three-year-olds we’re expecting big things from the Don Eduardo’s and all the signs are right,” he said. “We receive nothing but good reports from trainers and that auger’s well for some nice results this season,” he said.

Don Eduardo stands at Haunui Farm in 2007 for a fee of NZ$10,000 + GST. For more information please feel free to contact Shannon Taylor – 0212 855 513 – or Mark Chitty – 021 663 995.

Iffraaj Update - Thursday 30/08 30 Aug 2007
As many of you will have already seen, there have been reports in the media in regard to a positive EI test from one of the horses in the Anthony Cummings stable in Randwick. It has also been reported that NSW Chief Veterinary Officer Mr Bruce Christie, has announced a further 50 day quarantine period for the stallions housed at the Eastern Creek Quarantine facility.

Please find to follow the information that we have received at 7.30pm last night from IRT in regard to the stallions at Eastern Creek.

From IRT:

“There are no results from the samples taken on the 23/08 (swabs) and 27/08 (bloods). They are reported by AAHL as “work in progress” (the lab has been swamped with samples from all over). A horse was reported with a temperature at ECQS on Tuesday (28/08) and is under treatment. New samples from this horse have been taken and send to AAHL by AQIS.

There was an article on Racenet which quoted the NSW Chief Veterinary Officer as taking the following action: ‘The Chief Veterinary Officer for the NSW Department of Primary Industries Mr Bruce Christie has imposed an extra 50 days quarantine order from August 27.’

When questioned, AQIS in Canberra they responded as follows: ‘Nothing in this article has come from AQIS. It quotes Bruce Christie who is the NSW CVO. Nothing from AQIS has ever mentioned 50 days and I have never heard this suggested. I think you would need to get this clarified by NSW. The 30 days mentioned is from AUSVETPLAN and is imposed on infected premises from the date of detection of the last case.’

We are trying to clarify matters further however the situation remains confused. In the meantime, some of the media has a tendency to broadcast information which is not strictly accurate.”

We are still awaiting further clarification in regard to the comments made by Mr Christie as this will obviously affect the proposed arrival date of Iffraaj in New Zealand and as soon as we have more information and once again, will endeavour to post further updates as news comes to hand.

As always, please feel free to contact either Mark or Shannon at the Haunui office should you have any queries.

Iffraaj Update 28 Aug 2007
Since the outbreak of Equine Influenza in Australia we have been receiving many phone calls from concerned breeders in regard to the impact that this will have on the upcoming breeding season. At this stage, we have to take things day by day however we are hopeful that should the next seven days pass without an outbreak of EI in the Sydney racehorse population, there is every likelihood that Iffraaj will be released from Quarantine in the last week of September as long as the New Zealand border opens which is currently not the case.

Whilst this is obviously not ideal, the best case scenario is that only three weeks of the breeding season will be missed due to the delay.

Yesterday, Haunui received the following update from IRT, our transport company.

“5pm Monday, 27 August (Australian time).

As this is being typed the bloods from 52 horses at Eastern Creek Quarantine Facility (ECQF) in Sydney are being collected along with swabs from the two horses not collected on Thursday. It is likely these will now travel to AAHL at Geelong by same day courier tomorrow (28/8). We would not anticipate results before Wednesday 29/8.

The results of the 50 swabs collected last Thursday and sent to AAHL have not yet been received by AQIS in Canberra. No doubt the lab is inundated with swabs for numerous horses in NSW now being tested for EI.

Right now it seems unlikely the horses in Sydney Quarantine will be released much before the end of September. This may also be the case with horses in Melbourne Quarantine albeit we will be approaching AQIS for an earlier release seeing as these horses have been tested free of EI.”

Obviously, the next seven – ten days are crucial in regard to the release of Stallions at the end of September so, we will keep you posted as best we can via the website and please feel free to give Mark or Shannon a call at anytime on 09 530 8736.

HAUNUI STALLION PARADE CANCELLED 28 Aug 2007
Unfortunately due to the delay of Iffraaj in Australia until the end of September, we have taken the decision to cancel our public stallion parade which was to take place on Sunday, 9th September at 10am.

However, we will still be participating in the Auckland Stud Tour which will take place on the afternoon of Sunday 9th September where we will parade our two other stallions, Don Eduardo and Elusive City, along with a selection of yearlings by both sires.

We will post the Auckland Stud Tour itinerary on the site in the near future and hope we will see many of you on the day.

Elusive City Yearlings Sell Well in France 22 Aug 2007
Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) has made a flying start to the European yearling season averaging over €100,000 at the Deauville Yearling Sale this past week – almost 13 times his Northern Hemisphere service fee of €8,000.

The top honours were taken by a colt out of the stakesplaced mare Summer Dance (GB) (Machiavellian). Offered by Petit Tellier, he was knocked for €220,000.

Another of the five lots sold by Elusive City to reach the six-figure mark was a filly out of Porza (Fr) (Septieme Ciel), a half sister to Group One-winner Porlezza, who fetched €110,000.

Elusive City’s first ever crop of yearlings were sold through Southern Hemisphere sale rings earlier this year with ten selling for over $100,000. His top price was $170,000 on both sides of the Tasman, a colt from the Haunui draft fetching that at the January Magic Millions Sale to the bid of Mark Pilkington whilst at Karaka, it was Roger James who was prepared to pay $170,000 for an Elusive City filly out of Starzeel (NZ) (Zabeel).

“We couldn’t have asked for better results in New Zealand and Australia at the start of this year and to see similar results coming through at the first major European yearling sale is great,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “His weanlings were highly sought after in the Northern Hemisphere last year and on the back of that, he served a full book of 165 mares at the Irish National Stud this season,” he said.

Elusive City arrived at Haunui in early August in preparation for his fourth Southern Hemisphere season. His oldest crop have just turned two and will have every opportunity to prove themselves on the track being in the stables of David Hayes, Brian Jenkins, Roger James, Mark Walker and the like. “The biggest thing you can ask for a young sire is to have progeny in the right stables,” said Mark. “After that, it is up to the horses to prove themselves,” he said.

Elusive City is standing the 2007 breeding season for a fee of $8,000 + GST. For more information, feel free to contact Shannon Taylor on 09 530 8736, 0212 855 513 or email shannont@haunuifarm.co.nz

STALLION PARADE POSTPONED 22 Aug 2007
The Haunui Farm Stallion Parade has been postponed due to a quarantine delay in Australia which will delay the arrival of Iffraaj to New Zealand.

The parade has been re-scheduled to Sunday, 9th September at 10am. Our apologies for any inconvenience and we look forward to seeing as many of you then as possible.

To assist with catering, please RSVP to Shannon on 09 530 8736 or email shannont@haunuifarm.co.nz

Cape Cross Sires another G1 Winner 22 Aug 2007
You may remember last month a report on Crossing The Line (NZ) (Cape Cross), a horse that was purchased by bloodstock agent Phil Cataldo on behalf of North American interests.

A horse that obviously showed some ability, he won on debut in the USA at the end of May and followed this up some five weeks later with another impressive victory convincing John Sadler to aim him toward the Group One Del Mar Mile (1600m).

The Del Mar Mile was run and won this past weekend, Crossing The Line taking his unbeaten US tally to three and in the process he has earned his chance to have a crack at the Group One Breeders’ Cup Mile (1600m) to be held toward the end of October.

Crossing The Line’s Group One win is yet another indicator of the success that Cape Cross (GB) (Green Desert) has had when crossed with New Zealand mares. In the 2006/2007 Southern Hemisphere season alone, he produced four individual Group One winners in the form of Gaze, Mikki Street, Seachange and Able One.

This season, Haunui Farm introduces Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic) to the 2007 stallion roster. Out of a half sister to Cape Cross, Haunui General Manager Mark Chitty is excited by his prospects. “There is no doubt that Cape Cross has had some wonderful success from his seasons standing here in New Zealand,” said Mark. “The fact that Iffraaj is so closely related to a stallion that has been so successful in New Zealand is a big bonus but the fact that he was such an outstanding racehorse is even more exciting,” said Mark. “Iffraaj is a three-time Group Two winner and Group One-performer and was rated higher than the likes of Ouija Board and Takeover Target at the end of the 2006 season,” he said.

Iffraaj will serve a limited book of 120 mares this season at a fee of $12,000 + GST. There are only a limited number of spaces available so if you have been considering sending a mare to him this season, please contact Shannon Taylor on 09 530 8736, 0212 855 513 or email shannont@haunuifarm.co.nz

Haunui Graduate Notches another Win for Van Nistelrooy 1 Aug 2007
Haunui was represented by a winner in Japan this past weekend when Cosmo Kilauea broke through for his maiden victory over 1300m.

Bred by Haunui Farm and long-time client Garry Madill, Cosmo Kilauea was sold at the 2006 Karaka Premier Sale and was knocked down to the bid of Hajime Kaneko for $110,000 on behalf of Japanese clients. Out of multiple Group One-winner Fayreform (NZ) (Tights), the colt has been racing in three-year-old company in Japan as a two-year-old.

This win makes it a double for the progeny of Fayreform in recent weeks after the victory of Free Form (NZ) (Octagonal) in Australia from the stable of Graeme Rogerson. After running second in her first start on Australian soil, her win was very pleasing and it is now planned the she’ll line up at the Sydney Turf Club’s Canterbury meeting on the 15th of August over a mile.

“It was nice to get a win on the board for Free Form in Australia,” said Mark Chitty, General Manager of Haunui Farm, “and it’s a great result for the mare and Van Nistelrooy that the colt won in Japan last weekend,” he said. “In his first three starts they lined him up over 1800m and then 2000m – all against older horses – and since they’ve brought him back in distance, he’s run second in his two starts prior to this and now has a win on the board,” said Mark.

Fayreform has a yearling filly by Savabeel (NZ) (Zabeel) and she will be going forward to the yearling sales in 2007. She missed last season to Stravinsky and this year will visit Haunui’s new addition to the stallion roster, Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic).

Haunui Farm Stallion Parade - 26th August 2007 1 Aug 2007
The 2007 Haunui Farm Stallion Parade will be held on Sunday, 26th August at 2pm with the stallions parading from 2.15pm.

We will be parading our three stallions on the day - resident stallion Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel), Elusive City (USA) who is returning from a busy season in the Northern Hemisphere and our new horse for 2007, Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic).

IFFRAAJ - winning his second G2 Park Stakes. The new addition to the Haunui stallion roster will be on parade on the 26th

"The response to Iffraaj has been fantastic," said Mark Chitty, General Manager of Haunui Farm. "New Zealand breeders have certainly taken note of his pedigree and race performance and at $12,000 + GST, he certainly represents good value," he said.

Resident stallion Don Eduardo has enjoyed some Australian success with his first two-year-old winners getting the points on the board in Australia. "He had two winners over there over 900m and 1000m and with the new season now upon us, there will be more and more of them stepping out," said Mark.

Elusive City returns to New Zealand for his fourth season in 2007, his second standing at Haunui after starting his career at Trelawney Stud. "The response to Elusive City this season has been very pleasing and it is amazing the number of people that have booked mares to him after receiving a recommendation about the horse," said Mark. "His yearlings made an impression in the sale ring and we're looking forward to them making an impression on the track in the months ahead," he said.

To assist with catering, if you would like to attend the Haunui Stallion Parade, please RSVP to Shannon Taylor at the Haunui office - 09 530 8736, on mobile 0212 855 513 or via email shannont@haunuifarm.co.nz

First Foal Arrives 31 Jul 2007
There’s no surer sign that the breeding is upon us than the arrival of the first foal – this happened over the weekend at Haunui when the imported Danehill (USA) (Danzig) mare Destined (GB) foaled producing a colt by Galileo (Ire) (Sadler’s Wells).

“It’s good to have the first foal on the ground,” said Mark Chitty, General Manager of Haunui Farm. “This colt is Destined’s first foal and we look forward to seeing the safe arrival of many more foals here at Haunui over the coming season,” he said.

Destined is a daughter of Group One Cheveley Park Stakes-winner Prophecy (Ire) (Warning) and is owned by Haunui Farm and Cathy Franich under her Frantic Bloodstock banner. She’ll be heading across the Tasman in due course to be covered by Elusive Quality (USA) (Gone West) this season.

Haunui Grad to the Fore in Singapore 30 Jul 2007
Onceuponatime (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) made quite an impression in Singapore two starts back breaking his maiden with a ten-and-a-half length win over 1200m. On Friday, the big, strong, chestnut colt proved that he could also foot it with the best of his age group, and beat them, in the Group Three Magic Millions Juvenile Championship (1200m), the only major event for two-year-olds on the Singapore racing calendar.

LEFT: Onceuponatime as a yearling at Haunui

The win gave young sire Van Nistelrooy (USA) (Storm Cat) his first points on the board in the Southern Hemisphere when it comes to Group racing. It was a first for British trainer David Hill too – his first Group winner in Singapore after a very successful career training in Hong Kong. Ecstatic with the result, Hill commented, “whatever he is now, he will be twice as good in a year’s time and a year again after that. He is going to develop into a very nice horse.”

Jumping from a wide barrier, the speed was on early with jockey Ronnie Stewart deciding to settle on the rails in mid-field after some buffeting early on. Turning for home, Onceuponatime was in a perfect position to pounce and with a clear run, the colt knuckled down to the task of reeling in race favourite Handsom Jazz (Aus) (Show A Heart). “He was pretty green in the run,” said Stewart. “It was a great win in the end, he tried very hard and is a horse that will go far,” he said.

Bred by Haunui Farm and Jim & Leslie Ottway, Onceuponatime caused his fair share of problems as a yearling missing both the New Zealand Premier Sale and Sydney Easter Sale due to injury niggles. “He put his foot in a rabbit hole in October which caused significant swelling that was slow to resolve,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “We finally had to bite the bullet and say we couldn’t get him to a yearling sale and instead, we prepared him for the Ready-to-Run Sale,” said Mark.

“Because of his injury, the colt had a slight issue on x-ray and I had a couple of vets come to me at the sale and say the horse would never race,” said Mark. “Neither of them bothered to ask the history of the horse or what might have caused the problem and now look what’s happened, the horse has had four starts in Singapore for two thirds and two wins – one by ten-and-a-half lengths and the other, the major two-year-old race in Singapore,” he said. “This is the second horse we’ve sold currently racing in Singapore that I have had vets express opinions to potential purchasers at sale time not to purchase – the other was My Royal Captain who was bred by Don McLaren and has won a Group One up there,” said Mark. “The results of these two horses are what prompted me to write about the issue of x-rays in the recent Haunui Newsletter, and Bloodhorse are going to print that this month,” he said. “X-rays are only part of the vetting process.”

Eventually sold through the New Zealand Bloodstock Ready-to-Run Sale in November, Onceuponatime was purchased by David Hill for $60,000.

“I was pretty stoked when I looked up the results on Saturday morning and when you watch the video, the horse put in a very impressive effort,” said Mark. “It is a fantastic result for Van Nistelrooy as well – his first Group winner,” he said.

In total, Van Nistelrooy has had eleven winners in the Southern and Northern Hemisphere combined. In the North, he’s had the stakes winning filly Mailey’s Cat (USA) and the stakes placed Set Play (USA) whilst in the Southern Hemisphere he’s had Onceuponatime, Vanny Fair and Pit Lane – the winner of three-in-a-row in Australia.

Impressive Trials Winner for Don Eduardo 25 Jul 2007
The progeny of Haunui Farm’s resident stallion Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel) continue to impress at trials around the country with another winner and two place getters at trails around the country yesterday.’

Lord Donschief (NZ) ran out a convincing winner in an 850m two-year-old catchweight winning by four and a half lengths for in-form rider Samantha Spratt.

“He has always showed a lot,” said trainer Peter Lock. “He didn’t handle the ground at all well today and I’ve just put him to the paddock for a four week break,” he said. “I’m very pleased with him so far and I’m hoping when he comes back in in a few weeks type, he’ll turn into a nice Guineas prospect,” said Peter.

Out of Lady Malvina (NZ) (Kirioi Lad), Lord Donschief was bred by Tom McBeth who has bred and raced horses such as Lord Mellay (NZ) (Le Monarc) and Lord Mighty Mellay (NZ) (Lord Mellay).

Don Dixit (NZ) placed third in his maiden qualifying trial over 1000m with only a head and a head between the first three across the line whilst Donastella (NZ), trained by Shane Kennedy and Ricky Carston, also ran third in the South Island trials at Phar Lap Raceway.

“With another winner in Australia last week over a thousand metres and these trials performers leading into the new season, the new season can’t come soon enough,” says Mark Chitty, General Manager of Haunui Farm. “The horses are out there, the comments are good and it’s just a matter of time before we can start chalking up the results on the board,” he said.

Don Eduardo stands at Haunui Farm in 2007 for a fee of $10,000 + GST.

Don Eduardo Gets Another Winner in Australia 16 Jul 2007
The Kim Waugh-trained Trydon (NZ) (Don Eduardo) claimed victory on debut at Newcastle over 900m on Saturday to give his sire his sire winner number two from his first crop.

The leader for most of the race, Trydon was challenged at the 200m mark but stuck to the task at hand winning by a length over Mr Wadam (Aus) (Kenny’s Best Pal) with a further two lengths back to Mezmar (Aus) (Marwina) with race favourite Tiger Gem (Aus) (Tale Of The Cat) in fourth. The time was 54.10 with the last 600m in 34.71.

DON EDUARDO - 2007 SERVICE FEE $10,000 + GST

Bred by Soliloquy Lodge, Trydon was sold at the 2006 Premier Sale for $43,000 to the bid of Australian bloodstock agent Robert Roulston. Early reports from Kim Waugh was that she had a nice horse on her hands and that he would just take a little bit of time so, they wouldn’t be pushing him. “He’s always shown me a lot,” said trainer Kim Waugh, “and we’ve just given him that bit more time to mature before pushing him too hard,” she said. “He’s pulled up well and I’ll look to line him up next in the City and then see where we go from there,” she said. Part-owned by husband and former Australian cricketer Mark Waugh, the colt is raced by a large group and Kim says they could be in for a bit of fun with the horse. “He’s a very nice horse and we’ll just take it one step at a time with him,” she said.

Don Eduardo’s first winner came in May when the filly Ditas (NZ) won over 1000m at Sale for trainer Lee Freedman in the colours of her owner and breeder, Mr Eduardo Cojuangco of Gooree Park Stud.

“With the new season just around the corner it is great that Don Eduardo has notched up another winner in Australia and I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of them in New Zealand come the new season,” said Mark. “With both his winners coming up trumps over the shorter trips, you’d only expect more from them as they get over a bit more ground and that’s what we’re looking forward to seeing in the new season,” he said. “Comments from trainers right the way through have been that the Don Eduardo’s have shown a good turn of foot but, that they will just get better with time so the new season will soon tell us the story,” he said.

Don Eduardo is standing at Haunui Farm in 2007 for a fee of NZ$10,000 + GST.

Successful Season for Cape Cross makes Iffraaj Exciting Prospect 11 Jul 2007
When sourcing a new stallion for the 2007 breeding season it didn’t take long for Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic) to jump to the top of the list. With a very strong race record from a family that continually produces Group One fillies and colts of highest order, the fact that he was so closely related to Cape Cross (GB) (Green Desert) was just another feather in his cap.

There is no doubt that Cape Cross has proven a successful cross with New Zealand’s broodmare base and his success this season has been nothing short of outstanding - four southern hemisphere Group One winners, all bred in New Zealand.

Leading the way was dual Group One-winner Seachange (NZ) who claimed the Group One double of the Mudway Stakes (1400m) and Stoneybridge Stakes (1600m)at the Hawke’s Bay Spring Carnival beating Darci Brahma (NZ) (Danehill) on both occasions.

The ill-fated Mikki Street (NZ) was next to add his name to the list with victory in the Group One Zabeel Classic (2000m) at Ellerslie on Boxing Day whilst Gaze (NZ) notched up another Group One for the fairer sex when taking out the New Zealand Stakes (2000m) on the last day of the Auckland Cup Week Carnival.

It was the victory of Able One (NZ) in the Hong Kong Champions Mile (1600m) at Sha Tin that added the international flavour to Cape Cross’ southern hemisphere success and recently, it has been in North America that another possible star has emerged in the form of Crossing The Line (NZ) who was sold to American interests after winning twice in November of last year. The winner of his first two starts in the USA, Crossing The Line is being aimed toward the Grade One Del Mar Mile in August with a possible tilt at the Breeders’ Cup also on the agenda.

Add to this list of successes the seven Group One wins that Champion filly and mare Ouija Board (GB) has notched up in England, Ireland, Hong Kong, and the USA, Cape Cross has certainly stamped himself as a sire of international standing.

“The success that Cape Cross has had in the southern hemisphere in the last season just adds to the excitement of having a horse like Iffraaj coming to Haunui this year,” said Mark Chitty, General Manager of Haunui Farm. “Iffraaj is very closely related to Cape Cross and was himself an outstanding racehorse and is an outstanding individual,” said Mark. “He’s a horse that has a pedigree that New Zealand breeders recognise as being successful in this part of the world which is very important” he said.

“In bringing a horse like Iffraaj to New Zealand, you’re also bringing a horse that international buyers are very familiar with,” says Mark. “European bloodstock agents in particular are playing a significant role at southern hemisphere sales buying not only for international but domestic clients as well,” he said. “So, to have a horse they’ve seen race and win at the highest level, with a pedigree that produces Group One colts and fillies, all has a large impact a few years down the track,” said Mark. “We’ve already seen the benefits of this with a horse like Elusive City and I’m sure with Iffraaj, we’ll see the same,” he said.

Iffraaj will arrive in New Zealand toward the end of August after completing his quarantine in Australia. He has just completed serving a full book of mares at Kildangan in Ireland and will be serving a limited book of 120 mares in New Zealand this season at a fee of $12,000 + GST.

Elusive City Offers Good Value 11 Jul 2007
With the new season looming, the battle for season honours on the Sire’s tables is starting to heat up and of most interest is always the title of Freshman Sire.

Taken out last year by Show A Heart (Aus) (Brave Warrior) with thirteen winners and stakes of just over $600,000, this year, Choisir (Aus) (Danehill Dancer) currently heads the list with seven winners and total stakes of A$475,200. He is followed by Rock Of Gibraltar (Ire) (Danehill), Hussonet (USA) (Mr Prospector) and, Elusive Quality (USA) (Gone West).

ELUSIVE CITY - 2007 Service Fee NZ$8,000 + GST

Of the Freshman sires, only Elusive Quality has sired a Group One winner in Australia from his first crop, this coming through the deeds of the talented filly Camarilla (Aus) who took out the AJC Sire’s Produce Stakes (1400m) over the Sydney Autumn Carnival and ran third in the Group One Champagne Stakes (1600m) a week later. In total, Elusive Quality has had seven individual winners in Australia this season from nineteen runners and besides Camarilla, has also had the stakes winner Listen Here (Aus).

Elusive Quality’s progeny were in high demand at this year’s Sydney Easter yearling sale with an average of just over A$545,000, a top price of A$2 million and three yearlings selling for over a million dollars - Haunui responsible for one of them.

Elusive Quality is the sire of Haunui stallion Elusive City (USA) who will return to Haunui Farm this season after serving a full book of mares at the Irish National Stud. “They closed his book at 165 mares in March,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “Breeders just flocked to him up there this season on the back of his weanling sale results last year and the types that he has produced,” he said.

Elusive City’s first crop of yearlings sold through the sales ring earlier this year with ten selling for over six figures and a top price of $170,000 in both Australia and New Zealand. “We were blown away by his results and what was particularly pleasing was the fact that he sold two six figure colts in the Select Sale as well,” said Mark. “There was very good talk about them from buyers, especially the fact that he was so dominant and leaving a real line of horses,” he said. “we’ve heard good reports on the way they’ve broken in and he left types that looked as though they will be able to cope with early racing so, we’re looking forward to the new season rolling around,” said Mark.

Elusive City is standing at the unchanged fee of $8,000 + GST this season. “When you look at Elusive Quality’s fee of A$137,500 and then consider Elusive City’s sales results and the people who purchased his progeny, if he can get some performers this season as we believe he can, there will be some very good returns to be made for those who are supporting him in 2007,” says Mark.

Haunui's 2007 Stallion Promotion Launched 29 Jun 2007
Earlier this week, Haunui Farm’s 2007 stallion promotion was released and by now, many people will hooked on Haunui’s new interactive on-line game, Stud Connection.

Two years ago Haunui decided to take a very different approach to stallion promotion and what has resulted is two very successful campaigns – hopefully Stud Connection will prove to be just as successful, if not more so.

“In looking at stallion promotion and stallion brochures, we thought what makes Haunui’s brochures any different from the multitudes that are received by breeders each season,” said Mark Chitty, Haunui’s General Manager. “Whilst each brochure has its own look and feel, essentially, it is just the same information, information that in the age of the internet, can be found almost anywhere,” said Mark.

With this in mind, Haunui engaged the services of New Zealand’s leading Direct Marketing company, AIM Proximity and from there, two award-winning campaigns have been launched with hopefully a third in 2007. The “Bullet” campaign that was used to re-launch Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel) after his relocation to Haunui in 2005 won Gold at the New Zealand RSVP Direct Marketing Awards. Last year’s SPEM campaign has also won a number of awards including a Gold Medal at the Caples Awards in New York whilst it has recently been shortlisted for the Cannes Direct Lions Awards held during the Caanes Film Festival in Paris. “These awards are based on the results that the campaigns achieve and they’ve been up against the likes of Air New Zealand, Telecom, Westpac – big corporate with big advertising budgets,” said Mark. “As a result, Haunui has gained national and international exposure in an area completely separate to the thoroughbred industry which is very beneficial,” he said.

“We just wanted to do something that would engage people,” said Mark, “get them talking about Haunui and what we’re doing and as such, I think we’re seen as very innovative and forward thinking,” he said. “Whilst not everyone will be won over by our campaigns, if people are talking about us that’s great,” he said.

Haunui’s 2007 stallion campaign is entitled “Stud Connection” and it’s all about finding a perfect match for your mare – something that all breeders are trying to do in order to breed the next Champion. We have also introduced the concept of “Haunui Bucks” which can be spent on agistment and service fees. “It’s just something a little bit novel that shows breeders we appreciate their support,” says Mark. “Everyone gets $2,300 Haunui Bucks and it’s just a matter of what they do to spend it,” he said. “Of course, you have to send a mare to one of our stallions to be able to use them,” says Mark.

This season, Haunui has introduced a new stallion to its line-up in the form of three-time Group Two winner Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic), a very close relation to Cape Cross (GB) (Green Desert). “The response to Iffraaj since his announcement has been fantastic and the bookings have been coming from the day we announced the horse,” said Mark. “We keep hearing from international sources how lucky we are to have him and like any new stallion, we’re very excited about his prospects,” he said.

So, if you haven’t received Haunui’s stallion promotion this season, check out the Haunui website to download a copy of the brochure and visit www.studconnection.co.nz to play the interactive game and for your chance to earn some “Haunui Bucks” to get discount of your service fees.

“At the end of the day, it is the horses that do the talking and breeders will make up their minds independently but if we can be top of mind, we have achieved one of our goals,” he said.

First Winner for New Trumps 27 Jun 2007
New Trumps (IRE) (Cadeaux Generaux), who stands at Haunui privately for his Hong Kong- based owner Richard Hui notched up his first winner last week with Mendent (NZ) breaking through for his maiden victory in Macau.

Formerly trained in New Zealand by Chris and Coleen Wood, Mendent won a number of trials and was placed third at Ellerslie as a two-year-old over 1100m. Now domiciled in Macau, his victory last week was over 1500m.

Serving only a handful of mares each season, New Trumps' largest crop totals 18 live foals, and from limited opportunity, he has produced a number of trails performers in New Zealand that have made their way off-shore to race.

The winner of six races, New Trumps ran fourth in the Group One Hong Kong International Mile (1600m) and then second on the HK-G2 HKJC Chairman’s Trophy (1600m) before his retirement from racing in 2001.

Whilst New Trumps stands at Haunui privately, he is available for service to outside mares. Please feel free to contact either Mark – 021 663 995 or Shannon – 0212 855 513 – if you would like any further information in regard to New Trumps or, any of our stallions here at Haunui.

Big Wins for Van Nistelrooy 11 Jun 2007
Last weekend saw Van Nistelrooy’s first Australian winner recorded when the Peter Moody-trained Pit Lane (NZ) romped away for a six length victory in only his second start.

This weekend, the young son of Storm Cat (USA) notched up his first winner in the Northern Hemisphere through the deeds of juvenile filly Maileys Cat (USA). Having placed second on debut, the filly came out one better on Saturday to lose her maiden status scoring by half a length at Lone Star Park.

One day later and Onceuponatime (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) added to this tally with a 10.5 length victory in Singapore which now sees him being aimed at the Group Three Juvenile Championship in July.

Racing greenly, the imposing chestnut colt kicked away at the 300m mark and continued to widen the gap between himself and the opposition. Trainer David Hill, who purchased the colt for $60,000 from the draft of Haunui Farm at the 2006 Ready-to-Run Sale, reported after the race that Onceuponatime “still has a lot to learn,” whilst his jockey Mark Gallagher stated the colt has a bright future ahead.

Another G1 Graduate 5 Jun 2007
It’s been a pretty big season for Auckland breeder Don McLaren. It started in August of last year when he was honoured by the Auckland Branch of the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association for his contribution to and achievements in, the New Zealand thoroughbred industry and has continued throughout the racing season with the stakes successes of his blueblood filly Bonaichi (Aus) (Fusaichi Pegasus) and tough race mare Calveen (NZ) (Canny Lad).

It hasn’t been too bad in the yearling sale ring either. At the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale this past April, Haunui Farm sold Don’s first million dollar yearling when the Elusive Quality (USA) (Gone West) colt out of Blue Quail (Aus) (Bluebird) was knocked down for A$1.4 million – a truly fantastic but very unexpected result.

In Singapore this past weekend, My Royal Captain (NZ) (Zabeel) added to the spoils with a victory in the Group One Patron’s Bowl (1400m) – the first leg of the Singapore Four-Year-Old Challenge which culminates in the Group One Singapore Derby (2000m) on the 15th of July.

It is somewhat uncanny that My Royal Captain should be closely related to Don’s million dollar yearling. Out of stakes performer mare Kiwi Magic (NZ) (Vice Regal), he is a half brother to the outstanding race mare Flitter (Aus) (Bluebird) and also her full sister Blue Quail, the dam of the A$1.4 million colt.

Sold by Haunui Farm at the 2004 Karaka Premier Sale, My Royal Captain was purchased by Rob McAnulty and has done all of his racing from the Singapore stable of New Zealander Laurie Laxon. The winner of seven of his fourteen starts, My Royal Captain has finished out of the money on only three occasions and looks set to stake his claim to the title of Champion Four-Year-Old.

Don Eduardo off the Mark! 28 May 2007
Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel) got off the mark with his first crop of two-year-olds after the impressive victory of Ditas (NZ) at Sale on Saturday.

Trained by Lee Freedman for owner and breeder Gooree Park Stud, the filly jumped out nicely and settled in behind the leaders for the 1006m trip. At the 200m, pacemaker Point Of Time (Aus) (West Point) skipped clear and jockey Rhys McLeod pulled Ditas off the rails to make her run, the filly flattening out nicely to nab victory just on the line.

LEFT: Don Eduardo

“She hadn’t shown too much in trackwork so we weren’t too sure what to expect, especially over 1000m” said Andrew Baddock of Gooree Park Stud. “But, she showed a great turn of foot to pull in the leader and it’s a great result to get Don Eduardo’s first winner on the board,” he said.

Bred by Gooree in Don Eduardo’s first season at stud, Ditas is the first foal out of Zembu (Aus) (Fuji Kiseki), a two-year-old winner herself from the family of Fantastic Light (USA) (Rahy). “We’ve got some very promising young horses by Don Eduardo,” said Andrew, “and they will be given every opportunity,” he said. “Gai Waterhouse has one she has likened to Desert War at the same stage which is a lofty comparison,” says Andrew. “They’re only going to get better with time and Don Eduardo himself wasn’t at his best until the autumn,” he said.

Don Eduardo has had only a handful of starters on both sides of the Tasman so far, and since Easter he has sired three trials winners in New Zealand giving Haunui’s Mark Chitty every reason to look forward to the future. “Anything that his progeny can do at two is a bonus,” said Mark. “We’re getting nothing but positive comments from the trainers that have them in their stables and for this filly to show the turn of foot to win over 1000m is very exciting,” he said.

After selling a $180,000 filly at Karaka when his first crop of yearlings went through the sales ring in 2006, buyers weren’t shy to step up and buy them at Karaka 2007 with a top price of $190,000. “When trainers are stepping up and paying good money for a stallion’s progeny, they’re obviously happy with the ones they’ve got or, they’re impressed with what they’ve seen and heard of others,” said Mark.

Don Eduardo is entering his fifth season at stud this spring and will stand at an unchanged fee of NZ$10,000 + GST. “It’s as three-year-olds that we expect them to be at their best so anything achieved at two is literally a bonus,” said Mark. “Everything is pointing to some nice results over the next twelve to eighteen months,” he said.

Our Pineau on Offer at Magic Millions 28 May 2007
With a plethora of high quality mares in the Magic Millions Sale Catalogue this coming June, buyers will be looking for young mares with plenty of upside and Lot 1091, Our Pineu should be on their lists.

Entered in the draft of Kitchwin Hills, Our Pineau is a half sister to Reisling (NZ) (Last Tycoon), the dam of recent stakes winning filly Valpolicella (NZ) (Red Ransom) who trainer Roger James rates highly enough to be mapping out a spring campaign which includes the Group One 1000 Guineas (1600m). Reisling herself has a Zabeel (NZ) (Sir Tristram) weanling filly at foot and is back in foal to Zabeel.

Our Pineau is also a half sister to Octapussy (NZ) (Octagonal) who was Group Two placed at Randwick’s Easter Carnival last Autumn and ran second in the Group One Doomben Cup (2200m) last winter, and is now in foal to exciting young stallion Exceed and Excel (Aus) (Danehill). With half sisters by Fantastic Light (USA) (Rahy), Faltaat (USA) (Mr Prospector) and Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) yet to run and her dam Dopff (NZ) (Tights) still breeding, there is still plenty of opportunity for further black type to be added to the pedigree before long.

Carrying a positive test to exciting young sire Invincible Spirit (Ire) (Green Desert), with this much upside in the family, Our Pineau could prove a timely investment for the astute breeder.

Stallion News 14 May 2007
Hot on the heels of the announcement that Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic – Pastorale by Nureyev) would be joining the Haunui roster in 2007, came the victory of Able One (NZ) (Cape Cross) in the Group One Hong Kong Champions Mile (1600m). Out of a half sister to Cape Cross, this was a timely boost to the young stallion’s credentials.

Last night, Hong Kong was the scene of another feature race win for the progeny of Cape Cross with the victory of Everbright (NZ) in the Queen Mother’s Memorial Cup (2400m).

Trained by New Zealander Paul O’Sullivan, Everbright started as the race favorite and came out on top, albeit by just a nose, after a telling home straight battle with the Casper Fownes-trained Saturn (Ire) (Marju).

In winning, Everbright notched up his fourth consecutive victory from five starts in Hong Kong, - in his first Hong Kong start he finished second - and took his combined New Zealand and Hong Kong race record to eight starts for five wins and two seconds.

LEFT: Iffraaj & Frankie Detorri

Whilst closely related to Cape Cross through his female line, Iffraaj’s sire Zafonic (USA) (Gone West) continues to add to his list of stakes winners.

Five-year-old entire Banknote (GB) notched up his second stakes success in Germany this weekend when winning the Badener Meile (1600m) at Baden-Baden. Trained in England by Andrew Balding, he won his last start, the Listed Doncaster Mile (1600m) in March, and this victory took his tally of wins to seven from 16 starts.

A three-time Group Two-winner and Group One-placed, Iffraaj will join the Haunui roster in 2007 at a fee of NZ$12,000 + GST.

In other stallion news, Elusive City’s sire Elusive Quality (USA) (Gone West) sired his sixth individual two-year-old winner in Australia this weekend when debutant Viking Turf Belle (Aus) won over 1200m for the David Hayes stable.

Whilst his sire appears to be kicking the goals in Australia, Elusive City on the other hand, has rising two-year-olds in the stables of the likes of David Hayes, Gerald Ryan, Bart Cummings and Roger James and the momentum continues to build for this exciting young sire after selling ten six-figure yearlings in 2007 whilst his second crop has already seen a $115,000 weanling filly.

Elusive City’s 2007 service fee remains at $8,000 + GST.

3 Trials Winners in 3 Weeks for The Don 11 May 2007
The last three weeks have seen some impressive trials performances from the progeny of Haunui’s resident stallion Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel).

It started toward the end of April with the win of a filly out of Epic Pulse (NZ) (Epidaurus). Bred and owned by Nigel and Adaire Auret, the filly was ridden by experienced jockey Hayden Tinsley and comfortably took out her 800m heat by two-and-a-half lengths in 49.51.

The trials at Te Aroha on the 1st of May saw the appearance of Spanish Armada (NZ), a colt out of Red Letter Day (NZ) (Manntari) from the Richard and Chris Otto stable. Owned by the Sydney-based Mike Ryan and Russell Havens, Spanish Armada will head to Brisbane for some of the later two-year-old races before embarking on a three-year-old campaign. “He goes very, very well,” said Richard. “I was very happy with his trail last week and he is a nice horse in the making,” he said.

Don Eduardo’s third trials winner came at Cambridge yesterday through the deeds of the colt out of Straight Lane (NZ) (Straight Strike). Sold at last year’s NZB Ready to Run Sale by Halo Farm for $120,000, he was purchased by Hong Kong agent Willie Leung under his Magus Equine banner. An impressive winner on the day, the colt stretched out to an impressive four length victory for rider Gavin McKeon.

“It has been a very good few weeks on the trials track for Don Eduardo,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “His two-year-olds have been ticking along nicely and the trainers who have them are more than happy,” he said. “Now it will be nice to see them stepping out on to the track and hopefully getting some wins on the board,” said Mark.

Don Eduardo will serve his fifth season at stud at Haunui this season and will stand for an unchanged fee of NZ$10,000 + GST.

WORK RIDER REQUIRED 9 May 2007
Haunui Farm requires an experienced work rider to assist with the riding of breakers and pre-trainers. The ability to ride young thoroughbred breakers is essential.

The position is part-time, five mornings a week with an immediate start.

Elusive City Filly Tops NZB Weanling Sale 8 May 2007
The first hour of selling at New Zealand Bloodstock’s National Weanling Sale saw some spirited bidding for a strong, well-made Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) filly. A half sister to Brisbane Cup-winner Art Success (NZ) (Pentire), she is a daughter of the Zabeel-mare Zabelette (NZ) and she was purchased by Haunui’s Mark Chitty for $115,000.

“When I got to the sale on Saturday Shannon had already seen all of the weanlings by our stallions and told me I had to go and see Lot 11,” said Mark Chitty. “When I saw her, I just wanted to buy her,” he said. “She was the best weanling in the sale,” said Mark.

With an opening bid of $50,000, the competition was strong with Haunui holding off a strong challenge from Lyndhurst Farm’s Mark and Shelley Treweek. “She was the only one we wanted to buy,” said Mark Treweek, “and I haven’t been beaten for a while,” he said.

The filly will return to Haunui to be offered in the farm’s Premier draft at Karaka 2008. “Elusive City’s top priced yearling at Karaka was a filly out of a Zabeel mare and this filly is as nice a weanling as you will see anywhere,” says Mark Chitty, “and if the Elusive City’s come up like we hope they will, she will be even more popular,” he said.

Dimension Another Haunui-Williams Success 4 May 2007
Three-year-old Dimension (NZ) (Carnegie) became yet another Haunui graduate to carry the colours of Lloyd Williams to victory when breaking his maiden at Cranbourne today.

Hitting the track for the first time, Dimension started odds on favourite and never looked in doubt winning by half a length under a hold by stable jockey Michael Rodd.

Sold in Haunui’s 2005 yearling draft, Dimension was a $110,000 purchase and joins the likes of Group One-winners Gallic (NZ) (Zabeel) and Perlin (NZ) (Carnegie), Group One performer Activation (NZ) (Zabeel) and Group Two-winner Legible (NZ) (Zabeel) as successful purchases from the Haunui draft by the Williams team.

World Class Sprinter to Join Haunui Roster in 2007 30 Apr 2007
Haunui Farm is delighted to announce that world-class, international sprinter Iffraaj (GB) (Zafonic) will be joining our stallion roster for the 2007 breeding season.

A three-time Group Two winner and Group One place getter, Iffraaj won seven races in a thirteen start career that saw him compete in the very top echelons of Northern Hemisphere racing. With a pedigree that matches his on track performance and head-turning good looks, Iffraaj would find favour in any country of the thoroughbred world.

An outstanding sprinter on turf and the winner of the Group Two Goodwood Lennox Stakes (7f) and the Group Two Doncaster Park Stakes (7f) – twice (run at York in 2006 and re-named the York Park Stakes), Iffraaj was desperately unlucky not to claim Group One status when beaten a head by Les Arcs in the 2006 July Cup (6f) who at his previous start, won the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes (6f).

One of few northern hemisphere blue bloods given the opportunity to race past his three-year-old year, Iffraaj’s racetrack performance is made even more impressive after suffering injury early in his three-year-old season and returning to the track almost twelve months later to re-ignite his career with a hat trick of wins.

A sprinter at his best on good ground with a strong physical presence and a swift turn of foot, Iffraaj broke the course record for 7f when winning his final start in the Group Two Doncaster Park Stakes stopping the clock in 1.21.98.

Iffraaj’s early racing was undertaken from the stable of Michael Jarvis before being transferred to the all conquering Godolphin.

By Champion two and three-year-old Zafonic (USA) (Gone West), who is by the same sire as the exciting Elusive Quality (USA), Iffraaj represents the successful Mr Prospector sire line. The ill-fated Zafonic was crowned leading first season sire in 1997 and his 64% winners to starters and 8.5% stakes winners to foals ratio are undoubtedly impressive statistics.

Iffraaj’s dam, the Nureyev (USA) (Northern Dancer) mare Pastorale (GB) is herself a daughter of Champion Two-Year-Old filly Park Appeal (GB) (Ahanoora) making her a half sister to successful sire Cape Cross (Ire) (Green Desert) and the dam of dual Group One-winner and Group One sire Diktat (GB) (Warning). This distaff line represents a family that has produced not only Group One colts but also Group One fillies of the highest order including three 1000 Guineas winners in the form of Park Appeal, Shadayid (USA) (Shadeed) and Russian Rhythm (USA) (Kingmambo).

“It’s been no secret that we have been on the look-out for a new stallion to join our roster for quite some time,” said Haunui Farm’s Mark Chitty. “We had been made aware that Iffraaj was available and the more we found out about the horse, the harder it was to find any other that matched his credentials,” he said. “He scored a tick in every box of our stallion selection criteria, just like Soviet Star and Almutawakel did, and when we compared him to other horses that were available, there was just no contest,” said Mark.

Iffraaj is currently serving his first book of 150 mares at Kildangan Stud in Ireland. “Iffraaj immediately takes the eye,” says Joe Osborne, Managing Director of Kildangan. “He has a lovely head, a strong physical presence being 16.1hh with good bone, natural muscle and a strong hind quarter,” he said. “Conformationally he is very hard to fault and he has proved very popular with breeders in his first Northern Hemisphere season,” said Joe.

Brought to New Zealand by a partnership which also includes Gerald and Rex Fell’s Fairdale Stud, Brent and Cherry Taylor’s Trelawney Stud, Jim and Chris Campin of Chequers Stud, and Richard and David Moore of Soliloquy Lodge, Iffraaj will stand for a fee of NZ$12,000 + GST and will be limited to a book of 120 mares when he joins the Haunui roster for the southern hemisphere season. “We set his service fee in recognition that broodmare owners need to have the opportunity to make a return on their bloodstock investments,” said Mark.

“As always we will be maintaining our loyalty programme for those who have supported Haunui and our stallions in the past,” said Mark.

Iffraaj will join resident Haunui stallion Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel) who will once again stand for a fee of NZ$10,000 + GST and, Elusive City (USA) (Elusive Quality) who will return from another successful season in Ireland and also stand at an unchanged fee of NZ$8,000 + GST. All Haunui stallions carry a free return.
