New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready-to-Run Sale was completed in fine style yesterday with some stellar results for young Haunui stallion Don Eduardo (NZ) (Zabeel).
Six two-year-olds by Don Eduardo came under the hammer at NZB on Tuesday and Wednesday and the results placed him third on the leading sires table ahead of the likes of Stravinksy (USA) (Nureyev) and Postponed (USA) (Summer Quall).
Leading the way was a colt out of the Rory’s Jester-mare Miss Rory (Aus) who was purchased by Dan O’Donnell of Hong Kong for $190,000. Bred by Jo Wilding, the colt is a half brother to Champion two-year-old Joker’s Wild (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe) and was sold through the draft of Esker Lodge. “When I saw the breeze-up clips of the Don Eduardo’s they all looked to have a good galloping action and appeared to be traveling nicely without being really pushed along,” commented Dan O’Donnell after the sale.
Another six-figure sum was paid for Lot 304, a colt out of Straight Lane (NZ) (Straight Strike). Sold by the Sale’s leading vendor in Halo Farm, he was knocked down to the bid of Hong Kong’s Willie Leung under his Magus Equine banner for $120,000.
“Although he only had a handful of horses in this sale the results couldn’t be more pleasing,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “We received a lot of positive comments from breakers and trainers when the Don Eduardo’s were first broken in and from all accounts, this has filtered through to the buying bench,” said Mark. “I think everyone expected them to be true staying types physically however, as individuals the majority of his progeny seem to have thrown more to the female side of the family with more natural precocity,” he said. “A number of trainers have commented on their natural speed and their great temperaments and now it’s just a matter of waiting until they hit the racetrack,” says Mark.
From five lots sold at the NZB Ready-to-Run Sale, Don Eduardo averaged just under NZ$87,000. Don Eduardo stands at Haunui Farm in 2006 for a fee of NZ$10,000 + GST.
