The win of The Duke (Aus) (Danehill – Mer Du Sud by Bluebird) in the Group One Hong Kong Mile (1600m) last night provided a boost to the Haunui draft for the Sydney Easter Sale in 2007.
Haunui will offer a half sister to The Duke by Champion sire Zabeel (NZ) (Sir Tristram) at the William Inglis Easter Yearling Sale in April of next year. “It is certainly a great result and I’m sure it will help to boost this filly’s value significantly,” said Mark Chitty of Haunui Farm. “She is a mid-November foal, a lovely style of filly and the Easter Sale will be a perfect time to be presenting her at the sales,” he said.
“We purchased the mare in foal to Montjeu in partnership with Marie Leicester for $115,000 in 2003 - well before The Duke came to the fore,” said Mark. That foal was subsequently sold at the 2005 Karaka Premier Sale for $140,000 to the bid of Graeme Sanders. Named Miss Montjeu, she has shown considerable ability in the spring and should only improve on this form and could well be a possible Oaks prospect in March. In 2006, Haunui offered at O’Reilly filly out of Mer Du Sud at the Karaka Premier Sale and she was purchased by astute bloodstock agent Paul Willets for $100,000.
