With more than fifty years of history and success in the New Zealand thoroughbred industry, Haunui Farm has fashioned a reputation for producing strong, well conformed horses that can and do go on to be competitive at the elite level.
Results of the last 18 months have seen four Group One graduates of Haunui add their name to the Haunui Honours Board with a further two Group One performers also added to the list.
Already the winner of the Doomben Cup (2200m), Perlin(NZ) (Carnegie) added a second Group One victory to his race record in taking out the Underwood Stakes (1800m) in the spring of 2005. Railings (Aus) (Zabeel) quickly added to the Group One tally winning The Metropolitan Handicap (2400m). Bred by Haunui Farm and Noel Robinson, Railings then went on to claim one of the major Melbourne spring spoils in the form of the Caulfield Cup (2400m) thus providing trainer John Hawkes with his first win in the race and Haunui with a dream result.
The Autumn of 2006 saw the emergence of Octapussy (NZ) (Octagonal) on Australian soil. Racing in the Haunui colours, she was sent across the Tasman with a breeding career on the agenda however, after failing to get in foal, she was put back into work and was another Haunui graduate to be racing from the Hawkes stable.
The Sydney Autumn provided Octapussy with her first stakes placing with a fast finishing second in the Group Two Emancipation Stakes (1600m). She then came out at the Queensland Carnival to add that all important Group One form to her pedigree when finishing second in the Group One Doomben Cup (2200m).
One of the features of the Queensland Carnival is obviously the Brisbane Cup (3200m) and the H F brand was once again to the fore, this time on the near shoulder of Art Success (NZ) Pentire) - this win making it three Group One winners for Haunui in the 2005/2006 racing season. “To have three graduates of the farm notch up four Group One wins in the one season was fantastic,” said Mark Chitty, General Manager of Haunui Farm. “Railings winning the Caulfield Cup—one of the feature races on the Australian calendar—was certainly a huge result for us, our biggest win as breeders,” he said.
Activation (NZ) (Zabeel) emerged on the scene in the spring of 2005 with victory in the Group Three Coongy Handicap (2000m) for trainer Graeme Rogerson and owner Lloyd Williams. A year later, he was back to his best form when a fast finishing second in The Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) to Tawqeet (USA) (Kingmambo). He then traveled to Melbourne finishing fourth in the Caulfield Cup (2400m).
Mikki Street (NZ) (Cape Cross) was purchased by Mark Chitty as a weanling and was sold through the 2002 Haunui yearling draft. Purchased and trained by Lisa Latta, he has carved out a consistent race record and on Boxing Day at Ellerslie claimed one of the feature events of the New Zealand racing calendar, the Group One Zabeel Classic (2000m), becoming the fourth Group One winning graduate for Haunui in less than 18 months—the sixth Group One performer.
“It has certainly been a great past 18 months or so,” said Mark Chitty. “All of these horses have been sold through our yearling drafts and have been reared at Haunui,” he said. “With the 2007 Australasian yearling sales about to begin, we only hope that our recent success gives buyers the confidence to purchase horses that have gone through a preparation at Haunui,” he said.
