NSW Deputy chief veterinary officer Steve Dunn on Saturday confirmed five horses near Rosehill racecourse have contracted equine influenza (EI).
Tests came back positive late last night after a number of horses stabled in the north east corner away from the main racecourse showed signs of the disease.
Mr Dunn said the sick horses were stabled with a group of 40 horses, but said ever effort would be made to prevent the virus spreading to another 240 horses stabled at the main complex.
“This confirmation is another disappointment for the racing industry, and indeed for everyone working round the clock to prevent spread of this disease,” he said.
“We will be investigating how the disease moved to the Rosehill area.
“Again we must stress the importance of people adhering to the movement restrictions and taking all necessary biosecurity precautions when moving between horses.
“We can only successfully manage this outbreak if everybody does the right thing and follows the movement and biosecurity directions.”
Mr Dunn said because the Rosehill racecourse complex and surrounding stables was located in the red zone, strict quarantine measures were already in place.
Alll horses in the Rosehill racecourse complex were vaccinated a week ago, however, as the vaccine takes about two weeks to be effective, strict movement controls will be in place to help give the vaccine the best chance of having an impact.
“However, we will now be adding extra quarantine measures as of first thing this morning to prevent any further spread of the virus to nearby racehorses, or to any other area.”
Horses at the NSW Department of Primary Industries Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute (EMAI)’s Belgenny Farm near Camden have contracted equine influenza (EI). The historic property had been free of the disease but recently some horses have returned positive EI tests despite the strict quarantine measures maintained by staff.
Belgenny Farm has 11 horses, all of which have been moved into a higher level quarantine area away from public access.
The boundaries of this area have been marked by red/white DPI Quarantine signs.
Belgenny Farm, which is situated on the EMAI property, is a popular function centre for weddings and other events and as a school education centre. These functions will not be affected by the EMAI quarantine – visitor restrictions apply to the farm area only.
EI will not infect other animals or humans, however, the virus may be carried by people who come into close proximity to an infected horse thereby spreading the disease to uninfected horses.
The public and visitors are not to approach any horses located within the bounds of EMAI.

NSW update 4 October There are currently 3343 Infected Properties (IPs), 346 Dangerous Contact Properties (DCPs) and 383 Suspect Properties (SPs). Encouraging progress is being made towards the eradication of equine influenza through the implementation of the vaccination buffer zones.
Over 700 vaccinations have been administered across NSW since the start of the month.
Spread within NSW is continuing, however the rate of new infections is still declining and case numbers are continuing to fall below long-term projected numbers slightly.
The occurrence of EI at Forbes is disappointing. There is a strong link between the Parkes and Forbes communities and the disease has most likely been introduced via poor biosecurity control practices. The numbers of IPs in the Forbes region is expected to increase as EI spreads through the peri-urban Forbes horse population.
Qld DPI Update 4 October There are 585 Infected Properties in 12 shires throughout Queensland. Equine Influenza is still contained to South East Queensland. Post a comment Victorian Update 4 days ago Post a comment Victorian Premier John Brumby yesterday announced $2.2 million in programs to reinforce measures to help keep Victoria free of Equine Influenza and protect the Spring Racing Carnival. Making the announcement while launching the Spring Racing Carnival at Federation Square, Brumby said the Victorian racing industry was worth more than $2 billion to the State’s economy and employed 70,000 people.
“The new measures are extra support for long-term initiatives to protect Victoria from Equine Influenza, Mr Brumby said.
“The racing industry and the Spring Racing Carnival are important for Victoria and the rest of Australia, so it is important that government and industry do all that we can to guard against Equine Influenza coming to Victoria.”
Brumby said Victoria had secured enough vaccines to inoculate all Victorian horses in training for the Spring Carnival, and an extra 130,000 doses of the vaccine were scheduled to arrive in Australia on Friday. “Securing the vaccines does not mean we can let up on our vigilance and compliance,” he said. “The risk of Equine Influenza hitting Victoria is still high. The Government and industry must keep up our efforts to ensure the Spring Carnival proceeds without being affected by Equine Influenza.”
Brumby said the $2.2 million package includes:
$950,000 for an intensive public awareness campaign along the border with NSW, at Melbourne Airport and at Spring Racing Carnival venues;
$500,000 for grants to not-for-profit recreational horse organisations that have cancelled events to help reduce the risk of EI entering Victoria;
$350,000 for enhanced surveillance activity involving private practitioners testing for EI;
$205,000 for improved diagnostic equipment to be used by DPI; and
$200,000 to assist with improved compliance with border controls.
Brumby said the DPI had deployed round-the-clock border patrols at the Victoria/NSW border. “These measures have helped ensure to date that Victoria remains EI-free despite the outbreak in NSW.” he said, stressing the new measures would also build on the success of existing activities and support the recreational groups that have been affected by the horse flu outbreak. Victoria’s recreational horse organisations have been extremely co-operative during the current outbreak, and have voluntarily cancelled all meetings to minimise the risks of spreading Equine Influenza.”
Surrounded by champions past and present at the official launch of the Spring Carnival in the City yesterday, Brumby said this year’s Spring Racing Carnival, with the Melbourne Cup as the pinnacle, would definitely stop the nation. “The Spring Racing Carnival is the largest social event on Victoria’s calendar and each year puts Melbourne on the international map, drawing thousands of interstate and overseas visitors,” he said. “This year promises to be a fantastic spectacle, with strong country racing, a redeveloped Flemington Racecourse and a challenging international and local field of horses ready to take on spring racing in Victoria.”

A huge benefit with Otaki - Maori R/Club Joining RACE with Manawatu, is that when any stable runner races at one of the "RACE" race meetings, that runners connections will be up for a months free track fees. With plenty of meetings to choose from we can look forward to quite a few months free of track fees. "RACE" consists of the clubs from ... Manawatu... Marton...Fielding...Rangitikei...Wellington and of course Otaki-Maori. So it may be safe to say we will more than likely target those meetings where races suit said runners. There will be more benefits as time goes by, our already top rate training facilities will be improved even further ensuring the safety of all horses and staff.
At the stables we have now installed an 8 horse - horse walker, this is now up and running and we see this as an esential tool in keeping your pride and joys bright and happy, and horses just love an afternoon walk before being put away for their nights rest. Walking is one of the best ways to get those muscles loosened up, so a nice morning walk is a huge help to those horses that tend to tie up.
So all is looking good for a great 2007 - 2008 season with plenty of new innovations and upgrades in and around our stable. We look forward to bringing you all plenty of winners and a whole lot of fun in the up coming season.
Regards Karen & Kelvin |
