CHINESE GOLD

Chinese Gold has one of the highest stakes performers to winners ratio of any stallion currently at stud in New Zealand (25%). A fantastic achivement when you take into account the low numbers and the quality of the mares he has served.
Unfortunately he passed away in January 2005.

RAGS TO RICHES TALE FOR THE SIRE CHINESE GOLD

June 2000
This could be the opening chapter in a remarkable New Zealand thoroughbred breeding equine fairy tale.

The subject is a very modestly orientated Manawatu based stallion Chinese Gold (Lemhi Gold—Dame Windsor, by Northern Dancer), who appears to be poised on a spectacular rags to riches progression through the ranks.

Until now Chinese Gold was a thoroughbred nonentity but his first crop, now aged three, has made a spectacular impact on the racetrack.

There were 13 foals from his first term at stud. This season five have raced, Ernest William (ex Getto Queen, by Isle Of Man) and Crystal (ex Azacan, by Great Charmer) scoring two wins apiece.

Tebonnet (ex Crystic, by Icelandic) and Chinese Ripper (ex Lisa Bay, by Otehi Bay) were placed in maiden competition and sold to Australia. Tebonnet went to Caulfield and is now being groomed as possible South Australian Derby material, and Chinese Ripper is in the Graeme Rogerson team.

The fifth Chinese Gold representative Chinese Cracker (ex Miss Elite, by Super Gray) was fourth at her debut for Awapuni trainer Mark Oughlahan.

These results are verging on the spectacular from just 13 foals.

The Chinese Gold story begins in the U S A where he was foaled in 1985 and where he won five times, including twice over 1600m as a juvenile, from 37 appearances. One two-year-old victory was in a Listed event.

Chinese Gold is well related, his second dam Miss Windsor leaving a Canadian Queen’s Plate winner Canadian Champ. Close equine kinsfolk included Indian Skimmer (four French Gr I wins), Java Gold (four in Britain), the successful galloper and sire Bluebird and the Preakness winner Hill Prince.

A 1985 foal, Chinese Gold was passed on to Arthur Williams (now Sir Arthur) in New Zealand by his North American owner John Pearce to continue his racing career. He competed 11 times Down Under without returning a divdend for trainer Eddie Dickenson.

He spent some time in the back paddock before eventually coming up for auction.

Wellingtonians Nick Bentley and Paul Kelly were the buyers at $5000. They had no land and brought Manawatu bloodstock identity Tony Bambry into the team. Tony stood the horse at his Mangatiti Lodge.

From the outset the partners had great faith in their new charge, despite his rather humble immediate background. They saw great names in his bloodlines and felt a Northern Dancer female line through his dam Dame Windsor could be a marketing attraction.

They promoted Chinese Gold as though he was an equine toff and sent out regular newsletters. They worked on the new computer technology and strove valiantly to promote their charge, but the demand from broodmare owners was not over enthusiastic.

The five Chinese Gold foals to star to date hail from very modest dams. There are over 330,000 horses on the TesioPower bloodline computer data base and not one mare, who visited Chinese Gold was included. In one instance we had to research right back to 1910 to fill the screen with a six remove pedigree.

They were the equine pits yet Chinese Gold played his part and they produced desirable and successful foals. The USA reject upgraded their thoroughbred backgrounds.

In analysing the family trees, Chinese Gold is blessed with patterns that took wonder sires like Zabeel, his dad Sir Tristram, Kingdom Bay and company to the top.

He carries several super prepotent presences, which gives him a propensity to strike a genetic raport with a wide variety of mares.

When I was first introduced to Chinese Gold, the Northern Dancer daughter was a major selling attraction and two foals, Chinese Cracker and Crystal, from the five under review are linebred to Northern Dancer through a son and a daughter.

Chinese Gold’s sire is Vaguely Noble’s son Lemhi Gold. Vaguely Noble produced Otago’s top stallion Noble Bijou with a Nearco daughter in Vaguely Noble adding lustre to his breeding triumphs. Chinese Gold has this great asset as well.

Chinese Gold is going into orbit with mares carrying Cinna, Big Game, Hyperion, Windfields, Frizette, La Troienne, Feola and Plucky Liege. He is firing desirable genetic shots everywhere.

To date a Chinese Gold foal would have great trouble entering the Karaka gates. He would have been a joke to the breeding establishment. But not now.

Let’s see how he progresses till next summer when we’ll compose chapter two in the Chinese Gold rags to riches saga.

Tony Bambry
