Roc de Cambes, Pedigree Profile - by John Richardson (The Informant) 15 Jul 2010

NEW SIRES FOR 2010 – Pedigree Profile

ROC DE CAMBES

The Informant – Friday July 9, 2010.

Article written by pedigree analyst John Richardson

One of the success stories of modern breeding has been Red Ransom.  Bred and owned, until his death in 2009, by American multi-millionaire Paul Mellon, he was a sensation from the start winning on debut in track record time for five furlongs at Saratoga.  He won his only other start as a juvenile and was a hot favourite for the American classics.  But fate intervened as he was galloped on when he returned and was prematurely retired to the serving barn.

He was again quick to make his mark being Leading American First Crop sire of 1994, since which time he has stood firstly in America and, after being syndicated in 1999, in England and Australia.

He has amassed the princely score of 96 stakes winners to date, 15 at elite level including Elocutionist (Dubai World Cup, York Juddmonte International S., Gran Premio di Milano), Casual Look (Oaks), Perfect Sting (Belmont Garden City H., Keeneland Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup, Breeders Cup Turf [f & m]), Red Clubs (Haydock Sprint Cup), Typhoon Tracy (VRC Myers Classic, MRC C.F. Orr S., Futurity S., STC Queen of the Turf S, Coolmore Classic), Charge Forward (AJC Galaxy), All American (VRC Emirates S.), Red Dazzler, Ekraar, Duporth and Onemorenomore.  He died in 2009 at 22 years of age.

It is looking increasingly likely that Red Ransom will make a lasting name for himself as a sire of sires with a number of sons performing very well in that sphere including Sri Pekan (37 SW), Intikhab (17 SW including Snow Fairy, winner of the 2010 Oaks, and Red Evie, winner of the Newbury Lockinge S. and Leopardstown Matron S), Charge Forward (sire of Headway, Champion Australian 2YO Filly 2008-9 and winner of VRC Coolmore Stud S. and second in the Golden Slipper), Ekraar (sire of  the Group one winning NZ filly Ekstreme), and Domesday (sire of Pressday, recent winner of the BRC T.J. Smith S.).  With such young sires as Onemorenomore, Red Clubs and Red Dazzler to come his sire line seems assured.

On studying the pedigrees of his better winners one is struck by the wide variety of mares, to whom he has left top progeny which ranged from crack sprinters to middle distance stars.

New Zealand breeders would do well to pay attention to the well performed New Zealand bred ROC DE CAMBES, who has been repatriated to the land and stud of his birth to stand at The Oaks for his Japanese owner Mr. Katsumi Yoshida.

Roc de Cambes was an excellent racehorse in Japan, a country whose best horses have come increasingly to the fore in international competition in Europe, Australia and Asia.  He bowed only to the great mare Vodka among the 3YOs of 2007 just 2 lb. below her on the International Classification, and this despite his being half a year younger (as a Southern Hemisphere foal) than his immediate rivals.  This disadvantage did not deter him from showing his class and stamina by winning his first four starts from 1800 metres to 2200 metres including the G2 St. Lite Kinen and G3 Radio Nikkei Sho.

He met a star studded field of all aged Group One performers in the G1 Arima Kinen over 2500 metres finishing off the race strongly for fourth and finishing in front of Melbourne Cup winner Delta Blues and runner up Pop  Rock, champion racemare Vodka, and Japan Cup second placegetter Cosmic Bulk amongst other international performers.

At four it was confidently expected that he would show further improvement and be very competitive in a planned European campaign, but alas after a first up Group two placing he followed his sire’s footsteps by being galloped on behind in a G1 race and had perforce to be retired to a stud career.

It could well be that that misfortune could be New Zealand’s gain, as indeed has happened more than once in the history of New Zealand breeding.  His shortened career nevertheless earned the yen equivalent of NZ$3.1 million – not a bad return on the A$130,000 paid for him by Mrs Yoshida at the Sydney Yearling Sales.

His dam is the Irish bred Fairy Lights, by Sadler’s Wells’ brother Fairy King, and she is making a bit of a name for herself as a broodmare having left three well above average colts so far.  These are Roc de Cambes, the current 3YO Keyora (Bachelor Duke), winner of the G2 Wellington Guineas and G2 Hawkes Bay Guineas, and New Zealand Derby second placegetter Roman Chariot (Faltaat).

Fairy Lights is half sister to four stakes winners including Germano (Sandown Park Sir Gordon Richards S. G3) and Moon Solitaire (G2 Woodbine King Edward H.), and also to the stakes producer Fantastic Flame.  Their dam is the Ela-Mana-Mou mare Gay Fantastic, a full sister to stakes winner Gay Hellene.

The third dam of Roc de Cambes is the classic winning Sir Gaylord mare Gaily (Irish One Thousand Guineas; 2nd Irish Oaks; 3rd Longchamp Prix Vermeille), who is ancestress of such class acts as Pilsudski (by Polish Precedent, by Nureyev), winner of the Breeders Cup Turf, Japan Cup, Irish Champion S., Newmarket Champion S., Sandown Park Eclipse S. and Grosser Preis von Baden, Youmzain (three times Champion older horse in France and England with wins in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and Preis von Europa and places at top level including three times second in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe), Fine Motion (Japan), Naaqoos (Longchamp Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere), Tamiro Cherry (Japan) and Creachadoir (Newbury Lockinge S.).

The next dam is the Hollywood Oaks, Santa Anita Santa Susana and Santa Ynez Stakes winner Spearfish, an own sister to the good Californian racehorse and sire Gummo (by Fleet Nasrullah).  Apart from classic winning Gaily, she also left three other stakes winners including that very good sprinter miler King’s Bishop (by Round Table) and Empire Glory, winner of the G3 Curragh Royal Whip S. and 2nd in the Irish St. Leger.

The female family (no. 11) is an old American one, which has consistently produced good horses in most generations for around 150 years.

And so to bloodlines.

His sire Red Ransom, a son of Roberto (Hail To Reason), has balanced linebreeding, as does his sire, to Blue Larkspur, Pharos, Swynford and Mumtaz Mahal, whilst there are similar duplicates to the great mares Selene, Mumtaz Begum and Gainsborough’s dam Rosedrop in either his sire or his dam.

On Roc de Cambes’s distaff side we find balanced crosses  to Nearco, Hyperion, Gainsborough, Blenheim, Blandford, Polymelian, Mumtaz Begum and Pharos, whilst Blue Larkspur is similarly doubled up through damsire Fairy King’s own damsire Bold Reason, as is Tesio bred Donatello II through Roc de Cambes’s grandamsire Ela-Mana-Mou.

Roc de Cambes, himself, has a male only 3 x 5 double of Hail To Reason, but has sex balanced crosses to Northern Dancer’s sire Nearctic (4 x 4) and also to Nearco, Mumtaz Begum, Blue Larkspur, Pharos, Blenheim, Hyperion and, most significantly, Fair Trial.  A great miler and sire Fair Trial drives the engine room of Red Ransom’s pedigree through his mating with the crack French sprinter Democratie, a largely unheralded daughter of Epinard (who is out of a Rock Sand mare).  This mating produced the superb matron Fair Freedom, who matches superbly with the several male lines of Fair Trial found in Fairy Lights.

Additional sex balanced crosses could be obtained from such as Native Dancer, Damascus, Sir Gaylord, Princequillo, Alycidon, Bold Reason, amongst a number of options, whilst daughters of such as Hail To Reason, Nasrullah, Bull Dog, Northern Dancer, Royal Charger, Turn-to, Petition, Djebel and Roberto are among several alternatives to fulfill the same function.

It is my belief that Sir Tristram, Nureyev, and therefore Zabeel, are likely to fit spectacularly well with Roc de Cambes, whilst male lines of Sadlers Wells and his full brothers including Fairy King will result in a close up sex balanced double.  Mr. Prospector, and indeed the Native Dancer line generally are under-represented in Roc de Cambes, and it may be a mating that remedies this might work well.

Broodmare sires exploiting the Sir Tristram link would include Colombia, Danske, Don Eduardo, Kaapstad, Savabeel and Viking Ruler, whilst others that appeal for a variety of reasons include Stravinsky, Thorn Park, O’Reilly, Spartacus, Captain Rio, Chianti, Daggers Drawn, D’Cash, Diamond Express, Drama Critic, Eltawaasul, Frenchpark, Gold Mine, Istidaad, Justice Prevails, Riviera, Sandtrap and St. Petersburg.

It is doubtful  if we ever saw the best of Roc de Cambes on the track, but there is no doubt that the dark bay was a high class middle distance horse, well up to international competition, and as such he represents outstanding stud fee value for local breeders.

Crossthestart wins the Brisbane Cup for Karreman Racing 13 Jun 2010

12 June 2010, By Glenn Moore.   www.thoroughbrednews.com.au

Chris Munce and Crossthestart (NZ) combined for a tough victory in the $300,000 Group Two Australia Special Metals Brisbane Cup (2400m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday.

Crossthestart (NZ) holds on to win Brisbane Cup.

Trained in partnership by Bevan and Richard Laming, Crossthestart put the writing on the wall for a forward Brisbane Cup showing two starts back with an impressive victory in the Group Three Chairman's Handicap.  Since then he failed in the Premier's Cup when eighth though only a length and a half away from the winner.

However on Saturday Crossthestart was back to his best. He jumped well and pushed forward three deep to take up a position, settling one out and one back behind race leader Scouting Wide (Angland). Court Ruler (Taylor) sat outside the leader while Larry's Never Late (Nolen) sat third on the fence.

With little change in running, Munce didn't make his move until the field rounded the home turn. Munce came out three wide as Court Ruler started to fade, that allowed Larry's Never Late to get off the fence and Crossthestart ended up three wide.

At the 350m Crossthestart had stuck his nose in front and despite plenty of challenges being made Munce kept Crossthestart going well enough to hold on over the final furlong to score a tough win.

The official margin was a length and a quarter to Scouting Wide with Ekstreme (Browne) a nose away in third. The overall time 2.27.52 with the last 600m run in 35.53.

"It was a good ride and he is a nice horse. He was pretty fit today," Bevan Laming said.

"I was just waiting for the winning post to come up, but on a good track he is a good stayer.

"He will go to the paddock now then come back for the Melbourne spring."

The victory was the third time Munce had combined with Laming to land the Brisbane Cup with Munce steering Desert Chill (NZ) to victory in the 1995 and 1997 editions.

"Bevan and I are just one of the combinations that seem to combine well. I love riding Bevan's horses because they are fit and always race well and he knows I try to give them every chance I can," Munce said.

"The race wasn't probably run to suit the other day, he got a little bit keen but he only got beaten a length and a half and copped a bit of interference the last 50m, not that he would have won but probably should have finished in the first five.

"His run was still very good and he worked well in Tuesday morning. He was fit and tough today and Bevan has done a great job with him."

By Cape Cross out of the Gold And Ivory mare Startling Lady (NZ), Crossthestart is owned by Karreman Racing Pty Ltd Synd (Mgr: Dick  Karreman).

Smoulder looks a top spring prospect after her dominant win in the Listed Foal Stakes 31 May 2010

At Ellerslie on Saturday The Oaks 2YO filly Smoulder (by Traditionally) confirmed herself as ‘the find’ of the autumn/winter juveniles.

Her win in the listed Great Northern Foal Stakes was ‘convincing’ and was the filly’s third straight success after a good third on debut pre-Christmas behind Jimmy Choux.

A filly with obvious upside, her trainer Graeme Sanders makes no secret of his admiration for her professionalism and determination.  She just gets in there and does it,” said Sanders.

This determination and will to win The Oaks’ Rick Williams likens to the studs champion race mare Seachange.

“She’s got plenty of courage to get out of tight spots, just as Seachange did.”

“I’m not saying she is a Seachange but she has that same determination.”

Together with her obvious ‘heart’ and unquestionionable talent, Smoulder has also shown an ability to cope with both ‘good’ and ‘heavy’ track surfaces which makes her an exciting package heading into the spring 3YO racing.

“She has well and truly qualified for a tilt at the Gr.1 1000 Guineas, but who knows depending on the colts around, we might even look at the Gr.1 2000 Guineas as well, just like Katie Lee did this season,” said Williams.

One other person backing Williams and Sanders sentiments regarding Smoulder’s prospects is her jockey Chad Ormsby.

“She is a topliner in the making!  She did everything right, she settled beautifully and still had plenty up her sleeve at the finish,” said Ormsby to The Sunday Star’s Phillip Quay.

In the meantime Smoulder is taking a three week spell at The Oaks before she returns for the next exciting phase of her career.

STALLION FEES FOR 2010 14 May 2010

The Oaks Stud - 2010 Stallion Fees

Darci Brahma $20,000

Sakhee’s Secret $15,000

Bachelor Duke $12,000

Roc de Cambes $7,000  NEW STALLION

Spartacus $5,000

Keeninsky $4,000

*all fees plus GST

The Oaks Stud 2010 stallion roster is made up of six stallions with the addition this year of top Japanese middle distance performer Roc De Cambes, standing his first season at $7,000+GST.

Darci Brahma stands again at $20,000+GST, a fee proving very popular with breeders who see plenty of upside in Australasia’s hottest new sire prospect.

“He is again proving incredibly popular and breeders realise this may be their last opportunity to access the horse at that price,” said The Oaks Manager Rick Williams.

We saw the best trainers in Australia competing to take his yearling’s home and if their judgement is correct his fee will increase.”

Sakhee’s Secret Europe’s champion sprinter of 2007 and a winner of the Newmarket July Cup at three years, stands his second season at The Oaks for $15,000+GST.

Sakhee’s Secret covered 108 top quality mares at The Oaks in 2007, with breeders enthusiastically taking up the opportunity to breed their mares to one of the world’s fastest racehorses.  Williams reports there is plenty to look forward to this season with good word coming regards his first-crop northern foals.

“Charlie Oakshott (Whitsbury Manor Stud) has been keeping us informed about Sakhee’s Secrets first foals and he’s a very happy man.

It’s reassuring to get his reports and I’m not surprised, I’ve always thought Sakhee’s Secret as a type one of the best looking horses you’ll ever see.”

Bachelor Duke stands at a new fee of $12,000+GST and offers breeders value, having quickly becoming one of New Zealand’s most exciting young sires.

From his first crop 3YO’s Bachelor Duke has left high class stakes winners Obsession and Keyora, Paul Moroney’s top-notch galloper Prince of Wales, and the stakes placed filly Bewitch.

His 2YO’s include the impressive debut winners Gamble and The Diamond Duke, with trainer Shaune Ritchie already declaring The Diamond Duke as his Derby horse for next season.

“Bachelor Duke is achieving great results off a very small first crop of 49 foals.”

His colts and filly’s look like they’ll keep improving with age, and with his breeding an average of 133 mares here in his last three seasons we’d expect his success to quickly snowball.”

This year Spartacus stands at a value fee of $5,000+GST, offering breeders a chance to breed to a proven sire of winners.  Spartacus, with his oldest progeny now 4YO’s, has proven himself capable of siring both precocious types and horses capable of maturing into quality middle distance gallopers.

“They continue to sell well in the ‘trading market’ and his yearlings again sold well again at Karaka this year, averaging $63,000 in Select.

Keeninsky stands again at $4,000+GST.  The young Stravinsky sire has made a good start to his sire career having left stakes the stakes placed Miss Curiosity and Botafogo, plus winners Customised and She’s So Prestigious from his first crop 2YO’s.

“Keeninsky’s colts and fillys all show good speed and good attitude.

Most of his first crop are yet to race, but generally they are pleasing their trainers and the expectations are that his progeny will be seen out as spring 3YO’s and likely to appreciate the step up to a mile,” Rick Williams.

Bachelor Duke a comfortable leader over second season sires 19 Apr 2010

APRIL 2010: Heading into winter Bachelor Duke looks to have the Leading Second Season Sire’s title at his mercy; ahead of Handsome Ransom, High Chaparral, King’s Chapel, Johar and Savabeel.

A terrific result for the young sire!  And more-so when one considers he was the Leading First Season Sire in 2008/09, his  results achieved through the deeds of a first crop of just 49 foals.

With trainers expecting Bachelor Duke’s progeny to keep improving with age, and with an average of 134 mares bred in each of his last three seasons at The Oaks A BIG FUTURE LOOKS ASSURED.

Obsession measures-up as top class, winning at listed level and placing at Group 1 against the older mares

Obsession has always looked talented, and was rated by her trainer Frank Ritchie as unlucky not to win a stakes race at two.  Injury robbed her of stakes opportunities against he own age group in the spring, but this summer she showed just how good she is winning the $45,000 listed Westbury Classic over 1400m at Ellerslie on March 6th.

The only three-year-old in the fillies and mares race, Obsession proved too strong for subsequent group two winner Casabella Lane and John Sargent’s top performer Ruud Van Slaats.

On April 10th Obsession again tackled the older mares, stepping up to Group 1 level in the NZ Thoroughbred Breeder’s Stakes at Te Aroha.   Her close third behind Juice and Culminate prompted Ritchie to back-her-up in the Gr.1 Easter Handicap and the filly lost no admirers after missing the jump and running on powerfully from last to get within 3½ lengths of the impressive winner Timekeeper.

With further improvement expected at four years Ritchie suggests the Bachelor Duke filly should be in for a big spring as he eagerly anticipates the first two group 1’s of the Hawke’s Bay spring carnival.

Keyora - Twice a Group 2 winner in the spring

Keyora’s spring racing included two impressive wins at Group 2 level in the Wellington and Hawke’s Bay Guineas.  His winning style on these occasions saw the colt sitting relaxed and off the pace, before unleashing his devastating sprint.

An uncharacteristic run in the Christchurch 2000 Guineas in November saw Keyora racing right up on the pace, and master-trainer trainer John Wheeler battled afterwards to get the horse to settle in his races.

Wheeler, has huge faith in the son of Bachelor Duke, and believes he has won the challenge to settle the horse.  A Brisbane winter campaign is being considered.

Prince of WalesYet another showing enormous talent for Bachelor Duke

Paul Moroney’s talented 3YO Prince of Wales was shaping as a great New Zealand Derby prospect following his second to Zarzuela in the Gr.2 ARC Great Northern Guineas.  The Derby quest was cut short through injury and we look forward to seeing the Bachelor Duke colt back to his best in the Hawke’s Bays spring carnival.

Other Bachelor Duke’s 3YO’s to watch:

Asgoodasitgets: Closely related to Keyora, Stephen Marsh expects him to mature into an exciting 4YO next season.

Cavandish: The winner of two-from-seven starts, and placed second at his last two starts at Caulfield.  His trainer Colin Little rates highly the 3YO son of Bachelor Duke and was always  confident the colt would quickly measure-up to Saturday class in Melbourne.

Crystal Duke: Already the winner of four races, Crystal Duke looks the sort to mature into a capable  open handicapper next season for trainer Kevin Hughes.

Lord of Arms: This half-brother to Centre Crest was placed second on debut in Victoria.  Rated as ‘very smart’ by his trainer Patrick Payne and definitely one to watch next season.

Single Currency: The winner of two-from-three, he looked another great stakes prospect this season.  With his 3YO prep interrupted through injury, trainer Chris Woods is now looking ahead to the spring for his exciting galloper.

2YO The Diamond Duke Rated 'a star' by Derby winning trainer & jockey...

“Everything about this horse suggests he will be very good”                      jockey Michael Walker

The Diamond Duke was an impressive debut winner at Ellerslie’s Easter Monday meeting.  His trainer Shaune Ritchie has long considered the Bachelor Duke gelding as top-class, and  expects him to furnish into a leading 3YO next season.

“I think a race like the Two Thousand Guineas will be ideal in the spring,” said Ritchie.

“He’s the sort of horse you’ve got to love.  Totally relaxed, the longest stride you ever did see and acceleration.  You look at him and immediately see him parading for the Derby.”

The Diamond Duke hails from a family which includes The Oaks own talented filly Diamond Deck, plus star racehorse and exciting young sire Lohnro and full-brother Niello.

She's Prestigious' Ellerslie win full of merit 6 Apr 2010

She’s Prestigious does Peard proud

The Bruce Wallace trained She’s Prestigious (inside) added another winner for sire Keeninsky when taking out the DJ O’Sullivan Salver maiden 1200m for 2YO’s yesterday at Ellerslie.

She’s Prestigious with Craig Grylls aboard dashed clear at the jump putting two lengths on her opposition and held her lead to the turn fighting doggedly down the straight to hold out race favourite Red General.

Part owner/breeder and Wallace’s stable foreman Allan Peard was justifiably proud of his filly’s winning effort.

“The jump probably won her the race, but she’s so tough and she refused to hand it over to Red General who was at her a long way out,” said a beaming Peard.

She’s Prestigious is one of three Keeninsky’s in work at Wallace’s Takanini stable, and the sire holds a special place in Peard’s riding career with the two combining for Group 1 wins in both the Manawatu Sire’s Produce Stakes and the Telegraph Handicap.

She’s Prestigious gave Keeninsky his second win from just eight raceday starters.  Among his first crop to race are the stakes placed Botofogo (deceased), Robert Priscott’s recent impressive Ellerslie winner Customised, and Ralph Manning’s Miss Curiosity who placed three-from-four before finishing a close-up fifth in the Gr.2 Matamata Breeder’s Stakes.

Feedback from trainers spoken-with suggests Keeninsky’s colts and fillies will be better as three-year-olds, with most trainers being especially happy with the attitudes and speed shown by the sire’s progeny.

Ritchie singles out Bachelor Duke 2YO The Diamond Duke as his Christchurch 2000 Guineas horse 6 Apr 2010

Racing: More facets to juvenile will be shown next season

Mike Dillion, The New Zealand Herald, 6th April 2010

Part-owner Alison Ritchie just managed by seconds to get her bet on Ellerslie debut winner The Diamond Duke yesterday.

And it wasn't at Ellerslie.

The useful investment she placed on the impressive juvenile was at The Clubhouse at the Cambridge Harness Raceway.

'I didn't get to Ellerslie because I don't like taking our 17-month daughter Delta to the races, so I stayed home.'

The useful bet helped ease the disappointment at not being on course to see The Diamond Duke get home in a very competitive field.

'I managed to get to The Clubhouse to have a bet when only two horses were left to load into the barriers.'

Husband Shaune Ritchie took the advice of father Frank when he bought The Diamond Duke from The Oaks Stud for $90,000 at last year's Karaka Sales.

The Diamond Duke is by The Oaks Stud's impressive sire Bachelor Duke from a half sister to Diamond Deck, a brilliant filly whose career was tragically cut short through leg problems for the stud.%3Cbody%20style%3D%22margin%3A0%22%3E%3Cdiv%20id%3D%22adDiv%22%3E%3Cdiv%20style%3D%22display%3Anone%3B%22%3EXXXIXXX%3C/div%3E%0D%0A%3Cdiv%20style%3D%22display%3Anone%3B%22%3ECCID%3A%2031807%3C/div%3E%0D%0A%3CSCRIPT%3E%0D%0Avar%20isFF%20%3D%20navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase%28%29.indexOf%28%27firefox%27%29%20%21%3D%20-1%3B%0D%0Avar%20isIE%20%3D%20navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase%28%29.indexOf%28%27msie%27%29%20%21%3D%20-1%3B%0D%0A%0D%0Aif%28isFF%29%7B%0D%0Adocument.write%28%27%3CS%27%20+%20%27CRIPT%20language%3D%22JavaScript1.1%22%20SRC%3D%22http%3A//ad.au.doubleclick.net/adj/N2758.NZHerald/B4408837.3%3Babr%3D%21ie%3Bsz%3D440x400%3B%3Bclick%3Dhttp%3A//ads.apn.co.nz/accipiter/adclick/CID%3D00007c3f68bcaafb00000000/aamsz%3D440X400/POS%3DPOS2/acc_random%3D36565102219/pageid%3D94493967066/site%3DNZH/area%3DCAT.RACING.STY/keyword%3Dracing%20facets%20juvenile%20season%20thoroughbred%20sport%20part%20owner%20alison%20ritchie%20managed%20seconds%20bet%20ellerslie%20debut%20winner%20diamond%20duke%20yesterday%20wasnt%20useful%20investment%20placed%20impressive%20clubhouse%20cambridge%20harness%20raceway%20didnt%20taking%20month%20daughter/relocate%3D%3Bord%3D36565102219%3F%22%3E%3C/S%27%20+%20%27CRIPT%3E%27%29%3B%0D%0A%7Delse%7B%0D%0Adocument.write%28%27%3CIFRAME%20SRC%3D%22http%3A//ad.au.doubleclick.net/adi/N2758.NZHerald/B4408837.3%3Bsz%3D440x400%3B%3Bclick%3Dhttp%3A//ads.apn.co.nz/accipiter/adclick/CID%3D00007c3f68bcaafb00000000/aamsz%3D440X400/POS%3DPOS2/acc_random%3D36565102219/pageid%3D94493967066/site%3DNZH/area%3DCAT.RACING.STY/keyword%3Dracing%20facets%20juvenile%20season%20thoroughbred%20sport%20part%20owner%20alison%20ritchie%20managed%20seconds%20bet%20ellerslie%20debut%20winner%20diamond%20duke%20yesterday%20wasnt%20useful%20investment%20placed%20impressive%20clubhouse%20cambridge%20harness%20raceway%20didnt%20taking%20month%20daughter/relocate%3D%3Bord%3D36565102219%3F%22%20width%3D440%20height%3D400%20MARGINWIDTH%3D0%20MARGINHEIGHT%3D0%20HSPACE%3D0%20VSPACE%3D0%20FRAMEBORDER%3D0%20SCROLLING%3Dno%20BORDERCOLOR%3D%22%23000000%22%20id%3D%22iframe31807%22%3E%3CS%27%20+%20%27CRIPT%20language%3D%22JavaScript1.1%22%20SRC%3D%22http%3A//ad.au.doubleclick.net/adj/N2758.NZHerald/B4408837.3%3Babr%3D%21ie%3Bsz%3D440x400%3Bord%3D36565102219%3F%22%3E%3C/S%27%20+%20%27CRIPT%3E%3C/IFRAME%3E%27%29%3B%0D%0A%7D%0D%0A%3C/SCRIPT%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3CNOSCRIPT%3E%0D%0A%3CA%20HREF%3D%22http%3A//ads.apn.co.nz/accipiter/adclick/CID%3D00007c3f68bcaafb00000000/aamsz%3D440X400/POS%3DPOS2/acc_random%3D36565102219/pageid%3D94493967066/site%3DNZH/area%3DCAT.RACING.STY/keyword%3Dracing%20facets%20juvenile%20season%20thoroughbred%20sport%20part%20owner%20alison%20ritchie%20managed%20seconds%20bet%20ellerslie%20debut%20winner%20diamond%20duke%20yesterday%20wasnt%20useful%20investment%20placed%20impressive%20clubhouse%20cambridge%20harness%20raceway%20didnt%20taking%20month%20daughterord%3D36565102219%3F%22%20target%3D%22_BLANK%22%3E%0D%0A%3CIMG%20SRC%3D%22http%3A//ad.au.doubleclick.net/ad/N2758.NZHerald/B4408837.3%3Babr%3D%21ie4%3Babr%3D%21ie5%3Bsz%3D440x400%3B%3Bord%3D36565102219%3F%22%20BORDER%3D0%20width%3D440%20height%3D400%20ALT%3D%22Click%20Here%22%3E%3C/A%3E%0D%0A%3C/NOSCRIPT%3E%0D%0A%0D%0A%3C/div%3E

'He was the best yearling I saw at all the parades last season,' said Frank Ritchie.

The impressive element of The Diamond Duke is his temperament.

He stood quietly when Michael Walker waited to be loaded into the barriers yesterday and raced like a veteran throughout, sitting one place out and one back.

Walker having to push him forward early to prevent from staying three wide in midfield did not bother the first starter.

'He's just so relaxed,' said Shaune Ritchie. 'You can do anything with him and he doesn't worry.'

Alison Ritchie owns a third share with Bradbury Bloodstock, whose principals are Kennic Lui and Queenstown-based Wayne Chui.

It got better later in the day - Alison Ritchie again won as an owner when Nightime Jockey, a stayer with real potential, finished strongly in a R80, 2200m in Race 9.

Shaune Ritchie is particularly excited about The Diamond Duke.

'We haven't put the blinkers on him and when we do he's going to find five lengths,' he said.

'Michael Walker said the race today was 1200m, but it was 1200m too short for him.'

The Diamond Duke is now to be spelled with the Riccarton carnival in November as his main target.

The Oaks Stud featured in the other juvenile race on the programme, won by impressive filly She's Progressive.

She's Prestigious, by Keeninsky, is co-owned by Alan Peard, who rode the sire in his major wins. It resulted in his owning a half share in yesterday's winner with trainer Bruce Wallace.

Peard engaged Craig Grylls yesterday and the race was won when the filly dashed two lengths clear out of the barriers.

Cavendish (Bachelor Duke) a nice winner for Colin Little and connections 1 Apr 2010

Cavendish Pilgrimage Pays Off

Source:  www.lordlodge.com.au  March 24th, 2010

Connections came from far and wide to see the Colin Little trained Cavendish streak his rivals in the $30,000 Theo Super Vobis Handicap (1400m) at Betfair Park Hillside.
Little was thrilled for owners Ellis and Bev Gough who made the five hour pilgrimage from Shepparton to be trackside for the encouraging win.
"The Gough's have been long term and patient clients of the stable and Bev is recovering from a recent stroke so to see the horse win for them today was a big thrill," said Little.
Cavendish ($3,$3.60,$3) was quickly away and Oliver was happy to sit just off the speedy Karoo ($4.60,$5,$4.40) peeling off its heels upon straightening and after balancing up flattened out well to defeat Karoo by over two lengths with Star Scream ($3.80,$3.50,$3.60) a length away third.
The win was the first this time in for the lightly raced three-year-old and Little believes it could've easily have been more.

Colin Little Speaks After The Win

"He hasn't had much luck this preparation," said Little after the win.
"The smaller field today and cut out of the ground probably helped him out a lot and he deserved the win."
Despite a solid tempo Little was pleased to see Cavendish on the pace.
"I was happy to see him on the pace and out of trouble," he said.
"They never go too hard here at Sandown so you don't want to get too far back."
Little observed that the breeding traits were quite evident in the performance.
"Being out of a Stravinsky mare probably puts a little ping into him," said Little.

Damien Oliver All Smiles

"I also think he will relish the cut out of the ground being a New Zealand bred horse and he could improve on a slow track."
Damien Oliver was forthright in predicting a bright future for his mount.
"It was a good win," said Oliver.
"He will certainly graduate to Saturday class."
The win takes Cavendish's win tally to two from just five starts and his career earnings to over $25,000 putting him well on the way to recouping his 2008 sale price of $65,000.

Obsession Heads to Group One at Te Aroha 31 Mar 2010

Obsession on target for Group One Te Aroha Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes

Mike Dillon,  New Zealand Herald - Monday Mar 29, 2010

Obsession didn't win on Saturday, but her close third in the Hills Haden Valuers 3YO did nothing to lessen your enthusiasm for what chance you give her against the best in the $200,000 NZ Bloodstock Breeders Stakes at Te Aroha in two weeks.

She was tardy out of the gates, settled back off a fast early pace then had to be the widest runner on the home bend when improving from back in the field.

Obsession looked like winning at the 200m, but wilted the last 100m to be third in a three-way finish.

"She had a decent blow after that and will improve with the run," said trainer Frank Ritchie.

Rider Michael Coleman was happy.

"I went too soon, but she was travelling well at the time."

Spartacus' close relation Super Satin takes the Hong Kong Derby 19 Mar 2010

Dancer's Satin takes Derby

Posted by Michele Cullen March 15th, 2010, www.stallions.com.au

Super Satin confirmed his status as Hong Kong’s champion four-year-old with a stunning win in Sunday’s HK$16 million Hong Kong Derby (2000m) at Sha Tin.

Super Satin (near side) took the Hong Kong Derby by a mere head

Trained by Caspar Fownes, the victory gave him and nine-time champion jockey Douglas Whyte, their first win in the prestigious event.   Although the margin was slender Whyte, ‘Hong Kong’s pin-up jockey’, got the son of Danehill Dancer up to collar the Tony Cruz trained Super Pistachio, by a head.

A head in racing is as big a margin as an inch in golf or a line call in any sport, and the difference, was enough to throw Fownes and owner Ranjan Tikam Mahtani into ecstasies.

Whyte, ever the professional, appeared a little more restrained, but there was no doubt the win meant plenty judging by the big smile the popular South African rider had on his face as he weighed in.

Ridden back off the speed by Whyte, Super Satin was able to get on the back of former Australian galloper Fair Trade (Danewin) approaching the home turn.

Shortly after straightening, Super Satin was still only eighth, and with 400m to go, they had plenty of room to sustain a long sprint down the outside and grab the game Super Pistachio (Danehill Dancer ex Pharapache by Lyphard), who’d had found the front at the 200m, with Brave Kid (Elusive City ex Gordon’s by Kaapstad) a length-and-a-quarter away in third.

By Danehill Dancer, Super Satin was selected by former champion Hong Kong trainer Ivan Allan as a yearling at the 2007 Magic Millions sale at the Gold Coast from the Baramul Stud draft for his owner Ranjan Mahtani.

“It’s been a long time to wait for this,” Whyte said. “The best part of 11 years.”
“And then this horse came along and I’ve stuck with him the whole way and he’s really let down and produced the goods on the big day.”
“Caspar (Fownes, winning trainer) has done a fantastic job,”
Whyte added. “He’s come a long way.”

Whyte said he elected to grab the back of Fair Trade when Shane Dye elected to get moving as the pace slowed in front.

“They really hacked up and I made a do or die decision. Dye did that for me and I got onto his back.”
“He was only running 2000 metres for the first time so I had to bide my time and be patient and not hit the front too early,”
he summed up.

Super Satin made his debut in Adelaide when the two-year-old was nosed out by subsequent stakes winner Catapulted at Morphettville.

In his two other runs for Phillip Stokes, Super Satin was unplaced behind Augusta Proud in the Magic Millions Adelaide 2YO Classic before easily beating Cerberus Gal in a 2YO Maiden at Morphettville.

In recent months Super Satin has confirmed his status as one of the country’s best with four wins prior to his last start second in the Group Two Hong Kong Derby Trial.

He is the 105th individual stakes winner for champion international sire Danehill Dancer, Super Satin and is out of the British placed Rock City mare Mantles Princess, a half-sister to three stakes winners all by Danehill headed by Group One winners Johan Cruyff and Spartacus (Ire).

A truly international family, it includes Hollywood Derby winner De La Rose (Nijinsky) and her Group One winning son and sire Conquistarose (Conquistador Cielo).

First Winner for Keeninsky 15 Mar 2010

First winner for freshman sire Keeninsky - March 10th at Ellerslie

The Oaks Stud's freshman sire Keeninsky recorded his first winner when Dick Karreman’s 2YO filly Customised (pictured) scored on debut in the $20,000 Gucci 1100 at Ellerslie for trainers Robert Priscott & Clayton Chipperfield.

Rider Mark Du Plessis was impressed with the filly’s winning effort and on return to scale made mention to Trackside commentator Tommy Hazlett of Customised’s ‘wonderful temperament and turn-of-foot.’

Priscott will now give consideration to running Customised in the Gr.1 Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes, believing the step up to 1400m will suit her ideally.

A brilliant 2YO himself, Keeninsky won four of his five juvenile starts including the 2004 running of the Manawatu Sires’ Produce Stakes before going on to take the Gr.1 Telegraph Handicap at three.

From his seven first crop starters Keeninsky has left the ill-fated Botafogo, a placegetter in the listed Wellesley Stakes, and the Ralph Manning trained Miss Curiosity who was placed at her first three starts, before finishing a close-up 6th behind Banchee and Sister Havana and co, in the Gr.2 Matamata Breeders Stakes.

Keeninsky’s remaining four colts and fillies to race were all first starters, with the Bruce Wallace trained She’s Prestigious looking another likely winner soon for her sire, after running a bold 5th on debut just 1.8 lengths behind Customised.

Listed Win for Obsession 8 Mar 2010

Obsession holds a late close by Casabella Lane, with Ruud Van Slaats (3rd) and Nadege (4th). Kenton Wright www.raceimages.co.nz

www.thoroughbrednews.com.au 6th March, by Jeff Dore

A couple of races prior to his son training the winner of the Telecom NZ Derby, Frank Ritchie provided a special training performance of his own, when Obsession (3 Br. F. Bachelor Duke – Mystery Creek, by Kaapstad) produced an impressive display to win the $45,000, Listed, Westbury Classic (1400m) at Ellerslie on Saturday.

The only three-year-old in a race for fillies and mares, Obsession had towelled her Rating 70 rivals at Ellerslie over 1400 metres three starts ago, but found 2000 metres behind Katie Lee (Pins) beyond her at this stage in the Sir Tristram Fillies Classic at Te Rapa last start.

Between times she had finished fourth to Keep The Peace (Keeper) after leading over a mile in the Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham and a combination of dropping back to 1400 metres plus further fitness saw her prevail in dominant style.

Given the run of race by rider Michael Coleman, Obsession sprinted off the trail to challenge the pace making favourite Ruud Van Slaats (Van Nistelrooy) at the 200 metres and found another gear when asked for her best before being punched out under hands and heels.

Casabella Lane (Volksraad) boomed out of midfield to finish second, while Ruud Van Slaats stuck solidly to her task under top weight of fifty-eight kilograms, for third.

Nadege (Giant’s Causeway) found the line stylishly for fourth, after dropping back from a mile win at her previous start.

Ritchie said, “Bringing her back from 2000 metres I was a little worried she might have trouble getting up on the speed, straight back to 1400m in a group race, but she did it very well and it was great ride by Michael. At this stage 1400 and 1600 are going to be her trips."

While Coleman commented, “It’s great to win for one for Dick Karreman and The Oaks Stud. She gave me a beautiful ride.”

The time for the 1400 metres was 1:21.68, last 600m in 33.52.

Her strapper, Jane Ivil, was left lamenting the fact just prior to the start that the odds for Obsession was too prohibitive for her liking, and that $15 would have been more to order, but punters were obviously to the fore as she started third favourite, returning $7.80 & $2.80.

Prince of Wales, Keyora, Bewitch, Obsession - A big weekend for Bachelor Duke 28 Jan 2010

Three Bachelor Dukes’ to start in Sundays $200,000 NZB Insurance Karaka 3YO Mile

Bachelor Duke will have three of his first-crop progeny racing in the $200,000 New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Karaka 3YO Mile, at this Sundays Ellerslie twilight meeting.

Open to graduates of the 2008 Karaka sale, Bachelor Duke colts Keyora and Prince of Wales will compete, together with his filly Bewitch who placed 3rd in last year’s $1,000,000 Karaka Million as a 2YO.

All-three were bred at The Oaks, the colts selling in the stud’s Premier draft and Bewitch in the Select.  Included in this year’s Oaks draft are a Darci Brahma half-brother to Keyora - Lot 402, and a full sister to Prince of Wales - Lot 153.

Another high class 3YO representing Bachelor Duke this weekend is last start winner Obsession.  Frank Ritchie’s talented filly will take on Katie Lee and co in the Gr.3 Desert Gold Stakes at Trentham, and though drawn wide, Ritchie rates her a strong chance on  reasonable footing.

With Bachelor Duke eldest progeny 3YO’s, he continues his rapid rise as one of New Zealand’s most exciting young sires.  The leading first season sire of 2008/09, his first-crop again have him to the fore as the leading second season sire.

Frank Ritchie has Obsession on target for The Oaks in March 17 Jan 2010

Obsession’s reputation as ‘a top filly in the making’ continues to gather momentum, and she now looks a serious contender for the Gr.1 New Zealand Oaks in March.

Obsession was a standout juvenile for Frank Ritchie, and he rated her highly as a 3YO prospect  - though injury ruled her out of the spring opportunities.

Returning to the racetrack on December 28th , Obsessions first-up effort (pictured) resulted in her running a slashing second to the well regarded Redoute’s Choice filly Nina From Pasadena.  Showing she’d lost none of her dash or competitiveness, her resuming effort that day was full of merit and though beaten (by a nose) Ritchie and regular jockey Michael Coleman and were all smiles.

Obsession's return to top form continued with an emphatic win yesterday at Ellerslie.  Her dominant win, saw Kilkenny and hot favourite Blonde Bombshell struggling as she cruised two lengths clear of both at the winning post.  This latest win continues the exciting run among Bachelor Duke's first crop, with his colts Keyora and Prince of Wales both fancied in the Derby calculations.

Ritchie will target Obsession towards the New Zealand Oaks in March, and though supremely confident she has the necessary ability, he is conscious that the filly must continue to do everything right given the tight deadline leading into the March feature.

Prince of Wales - Another leading Derby prospect for Bachelor Duke 28 Dec 2009

Prince of Wales - Another top Derby prospect for Paul Moroney and for Bachelor Duke

Paul Moroney’s Bachelor Duke colt Prince of Wales looked every inch a top New Zealand Derby prospect when running second in Saturdays $100,000 Gr.2 Great Northern Guineas.

Stepping-up from the mile to 2100m, Prince of Wales showed an impressive turn-of-foot when kicking away from the field by 2½ lengths in the home straight.  Mark Walker’s well regarded Zabeel filly Zarzuela set chase, and showing the benefit herself of having a previous run over ground, she fought strongly to peg the colt back and win by a head.

Purchased by Moroney as a stallion prospect, Prince of Wales looks a big chance to gain further valuable black type over the summer/autumn months; though the colt is perhaps a little unlucky not to have already further enhanced his stakes record after some luckless runs which include the Gr.1 Levin Classic where he was denied a clear run in the home-straight.

Moroney has made no secret that he rates Prince of Wales a ‘serious horse,’ and reports some ambitious plans for his charge.  Firstly though, the colt will take a short break and freshen-up before his immediate target – either the Wellington Stakes or Trentham Stakes at the end of January.

Following on, Prince of Wales will return to Ellerslie for the Derby Trial and the $2.1 million  New Zealand Derby, giving Moroney an enviable double shot at the riches with illustrious stablemate Monaco Consul also on the Derby trail.

Prince of Wales also gives his own sire Bachelor Duke a great double shot at the Derby, with John Wheeler’s dual guineas winning colt Keyora also rated a leading chance in the early betting market.

Champion mare Seachange foals at The Oaks 11 Dec 2009

Zabeel colt for Seachange

Dick Karreman’s champion racemare Seachange foaled a bright and healthy bay Zabeel colt,  Saturday December 5th at The Oaks.

The Oaks foaling manager Kylie Burt reports the foaling went very smoothly, and that Seachange is proving herself to be a very attentive (and protective) first-time mother.

A seven time group one winner, Seachange was renowned for her courage and class on the racetrack, and also for her less than perfect front leg conformation.  However, to his satisfaction The Oaks General Manager Rick Williams reports her Zabeel foal was born correct and with plenty of leg for a first foal.

"He's a good sized colt for a first foal.  He's got good legs and we're very happy with him," Williams said.

With Seachange foaling so late in the season, Williams will wait to see how she comes through her foal heat examination before deciding on whether to breed Seachange this season.

Sakhee's Secret receives his opportunity in Year One at The Oaks 10 Nov 2009

The Oaks new stallion Sakhee’s Secret has been enthusiastically received by top New Zealand breeders in his first season at stud.

The Champion European sprinter of 2007 was guaranteed his stallion opportunity when The Oaks’ General Manager Rick Williams first put together the New Zealand syndicate to purchase equity in the horse.

Among those who enthusiastically committed to take up the available shares in Sakhee’s Secret were high profile breeders such as: Sir Patrick Hogan (Cambridge Stud), Peter & Philip Vela (Pencarrow Stud), Kevin & Joanne Hickman (Valachi Downs), former New Zealand Breeder of the Year Scott Williams, and Tom Jamison.

A number of New Zealand’s prominent private breeders have also shown their support and booked mares to Sakhee’s Secret, ensuring him a top- class book in Year One.

By agreement with The Oaks northern partner Whitsbury Manor Stud (Britain), Sakhee’s Secret is restricted to serve a maximum book of 120 mares and is expected to serve close to that number.

*Attached below is a list detailing some of the mares in Sakhee’s Secrets current book.

Mark Walker’s former top race filly Shikoba is among the quality mares now in-foal to Sakhee’s Secret. Owned by Micaela Murray, Shikoba is pictured here at The Oaks with her Encosta De Lago colt at foot.

Another stakes winner for the family of Sakhee's Secret 2 Nov 2009

Queen’s Grace in the pink & purple proves too dominant in the finish up the testing Newmarket straight.

Daughter of Sakhee's Secrets’ half sister wins Bosra Sham Fillies' Stakes

The Listed £30,000 EBF Igloos Bosra Sham Fillies' Stakes over six furlongs at Newmarket on Friday was won by the Hughie Morrison-trained Queen's Grace (Bahamian Bounty), who raced prominently under Steve Drowne before finding plenty up the rise to the line when refusing to buckle despite pressure from the 13-8 favourite Puff and Henry Cecil's Tomintoul Singer.

A Newbury maiden winner in August, Queen's Grace was third in a Salisbury Listed contest last month on her first try in stakes company.

Morrison said: She was not quite right and came back coughing after her run at Salisbury, but she is tough in all walks of life and has a real good engine.

She didn't seem to be stopping at the end today so we'll put her in the One Thousand Guineas next spring and see how we go.”

Homebred by Bridget Swire, Queen's Grace is out of five-time Listed sprint winner Palace Affair, herself a sister to the Listed-placed winner King's Caprice and a half sister to Group One July Cup winner Sakhee's Secret. The second dam Palace Street won the Listed John of Gaunt Stakes and the Cammidge Trophy.

Keyora Wins Wellington Guineas 27 Oct 2009

Keyora and Hayden Tinsley have the Guineas parcelled up

THOROUGHBRED NEWS, October 3 - by Jeff Dore

A horse labelled by trainer John Wheeler as a potential superstar, Keyora (3 Br. C. Bachelor Duke – Fairy Lights, by Fairy King) recorded his second guineas success in October, with an authoritative win the the $85,000, Group II, New Zealand Bloodstock Wellington Thoroughbred Breeders Guineas over 1500 metres for Three-Year-Olds at Trentham on Saturday.

On Kelt Day at Hastings on October 3 Keyora had produced a herculean performance to win the group two Hawkes Bay Guineas and again with Hayden Tinsley in the saddle the gelding of great temperament to match his ability was far too good.

After travelling keenly towards the rear in a field of eight, Keyora easily reeled in the leader when asked to quicken at the 300 metres and apart from second placed Descarado (High Chaparral) he won virtually unopposed.

The margin separating the first two was one and a quarter lengths, with a further four lengths to Military Move (Volksraad) in third.

After receiving over one-hundred millimetres of rain in the week leading up to the meeting, the initial track reading was Heavy11, but upgraded to Heavy10 prior to the Guineas in the middle of the programme, and described by jockey Mark Du Plessis, when asked for his opinion, as ‘very holding’.

Keyora had proved his mettle when not only coming from the rear of the field over 1400 metres to win his previous start at Hastings, but sustaining a massive run in the straight after being flushed very wide on the home turn, to beat high-class filly St Germaine (Keeper) in a head bobbing finish.

Bred at The Oaks Stud by Karreman Bloodstock Ltd, Keyora was purchased by John Wheeler at the 2008 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale for $200,000 and races for owners E M & Miss N A Bourke, M I Eliason, J P Fleming, A R Piercy, J A Washer & Est Late B J Fleming.

The focus for Keyora is now the $1m, Group I, 2000 Guineas at Riccarton Park Racecourse in Christchurch on November 7.

Bachelor Duke's Single Currency rated 'Top Class' by Cambridge trainer Chris Wood 16 Oct 2009

Bachelor Duke gelding Single Currency set to put the Chris Woods stable name back ‘in lights’

Single Currency makes it two-from-two when cruising to the post 1½ lengths ahead of a game Sitara yesterday at Hastings.

THOROUGHBRED NEWS, October 15 - by Jeff Dore

The performance by Single Currency (pictured) suggested the winner of two races from as many attempts has a promising future.

Scratched on a couple of occasions due to unsuitable footing after bolting in by nearly four lengths on good ground over 1200 metres when debuting at Taupo on September 9, Single Currency was equally impressive taking out the www.thekiwichallenge.com Rating 70 over 1200 metres.

Wood said, “He has to have reasonable footing to show his best and we had to put a line through him on a couple of occasions before getting this opportunity.”

In a race for apprentice riders, Samantha Collett managed to balance Single Currency in tight quarters handy to the pace, yet he lost touch with the leader from third when covering some extra ground rounding the home turn.

But once Collett balanced him up again he produced a big finish to reel in the leader and score impressively by one and a half lengths before rolling on past the post in good fashion.

In a competitive field, he covered the 1200 metres in 1:11.31 after a shower of rain prior to the race had dampened the footing to dead.

Proven to be a bargain buy at the 2008 New Zealand Bloodstock Festival Yearling Sale, Wood outlaid $29,000 and shares part ownership with G H Mander, Mrs F McDonald, G J McMahon, P G Proverbs, R P Rosenberg, & Miss J Wah.

A son of The Oaks Stud stallion Bachelor Duke (Miswaki), Single Currency follows in the footsteps of Keyora (ex. Fairy Lights, by Fairy King), another talented son by the same sire who recently took out the group two Hawkes Bay Guineas on the Hastings track.

“I like the Bachelor Duke’s”, said Wood, “they’ve got good attitudes and the four in my stable all have ability.”

With twenty-two in work, Wood said it was timely to have a horse like Single Currency to put the stable name ‘in lights’ and he is hoping to step his charge up a notch by contesting the $85,000, Group II, Wellington Thoroughbred Breeders’ Guineas (1500m) at Trentham on October 24.

“We’ll go there if the footing is okay and maybe look at Levin at the end of November. He might go over more ground as he seems to relax, so there is also the Derby.”

Acting on a range of footing, his dam, Pennies In Heaven, won five times from 1400 metres to 2170 metres and the genuine attributes that she displayed seem set to offer Wood and fellow connections plenty of scope with their latest star.

Sakhee's Secrets half-brother Palace Moon takes listed £40,000 BET365 Hopeful Stakes at Newmarket 31 Aug 2009

Sakhee’s Secrets dam Palace Street adds another stakes winner to her impressive broodmare resume.

The Oaks new stallion Sakhee’s Secret received a further boost on Saturday with his half-brother Palace Moon (pictured) taking out the £40,000 listed BET 365 Hopeful Stakes over 1200m at Newmarket.

Confidently backed into 9-4 favourite, Palace Moon (Fantastic Light) scored by a neck from Swiss Diva.  The winning margin slightly flattering to the runner-up with Palace Moon edging left in the final running despite clearly having the measure of Swiss Diva.

Palace Moon, who has had just six runs previously, put in a solid performance at his last two starts when fourth in the Gr.2 CGA Hungerford Stakes at Newbury and second in the listed Salisbury Cathedral Stakes.

Rated highly by trainer Hughie Morrison, consideration is now been given to starting the talented four year old in September’s Gr.2 Diadem Stakes at Ascot.

Palace Moon’s dam Palace Street was a multiple stakes winning sprinter-miler, competing 19 of her 22 starts in Group or listed company.  Having already produced one Champion sprinter in Sakhee’s Secret (Sakhee) as well as the five-times listed winning sprinter Palace Affair (Pursuit of Love), her latest stakes winning sprinter is by Fantastic Light a stallion  renowned as a high class stamina influence.

The impressive turn-of-foot shown by Palace Moon simply adds further credence to the family’s reputation for producing top-class speed horses – a family which includes the highly respected Champion sprinter (and sire) Stravinsky.

BACHELOR DUKE : LEADING FIRST SEASON SIRE 2008/09 4 Aug 2009

The Oaks resident sire Bachelor Duke has taken out the 2008/09 New Zealand First Season Sires Award finishing ahead of NZ based sires King’s Chapel, Savabeel, One Cool Cat, Handsome Ransom and Scaredee Cat.

An encouraging start to his stallion career and more-especially given this was achieved from a first foal crop of just 49 foals.

With Bachelor Duke’s progeny widely expected to improve as three and four year olds his future at The Oaks looks assured.

“We are very happy with what we’ve seen to date and the signs are good,” said The Oaks Manager Rick Williams.

“The trainers are saying they like his progeny.  They seem happy to give them a bit of time and generally  expect them as three year olds to really begin to hit their straps.”

With a number of Bachelor Duke's more impressive trials winners turned out to spell after winning and some talented juveniles seen out on raceday, one gets the impression the richly bred Bachelor Duke is well on the way to establishing himself among the up and coming sires.

Some Bachelor Duke three year olds to watch for in the spring include: Prince of Wales (ex Serenity Princess by Encosta de Lago), Bewitch (Star of Flight by Marscay) – Paul Moroney, Keyora (ex Fairy Lights by Fairy King) – John Wheeler, Disarm (ex Amaroo by Zabeel) – Stephen McKee, Single Currency (ex Pennies in Heaven by Pompeii Court) – Chris Wood, Obsession (ex Mystery Creek by Kaapstad) – Frank Ritchie, Crystal Duke (ex Starfire Glow by Danasinga) – Kevin Hughes.

Presvis joins Sakhee's Secrets as another top-liner from Sakhee's first season foals 3 May 2009

Hong Kong’s QE 11 Cup winner Presvis boosts the stocks of new sire Sakhee’s Secret

The Informant – Friday May 1st

The Oaks Studs’ Rick Williams had reason to smile after Sundays impressive winning performance by Presvis in the HK$14 million Queen Elizabeth Cup (2000m).  Presvis and The Oaks new sire and former Champion European Sprinter Sakhee’s Secret (pictured) both hail from the first crop of young British sire Sakhee.

Sakhee himself is best remembered as a former Goldolphin trained superstar galloper that won the 2001 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and was voted 2001 Horse of the Year.

Presvis, trained in Newmarket by Luca Cumani, showed his own star qualities on Sunday night when storming home from last to win the rich Hong Kong Group One race.  His winning margin a comfortable one length and going away from the Hong Kong champion Viva Pataca with former Kiwi galloper Thumbs Up in 3rd place.

Presvis is rated by Cumani as a ‘star in the making.’  The lightly raced gelding had already shown his class when previously beating home nine individual Group One winners while running second to Gladiatorus in the $5 million Dubai Dutyfree Stakes.

Cumani is now considering a trip to Singapore for the Gold Cup and his ambitious plans include a return trip for Hong Kong’s big race in December, the Hong Kong Cup.
