2009/10 Racing season. With the Karreman Racing Team coming through last year’s rebuilding stage, some bright lights among the team make their way onto the race track. Looking forward to the summer and autumn racing ahead, we await to see which individuals might make it to through to the top echelons, joining Dick Karreman’s past star performers: Seachange, Chant, Magnetism, Keepa Cruisin, Diamond Deck, Roman Chariot, and Upstaged.
Obsession Bachelor Duke – Mystery Creek 3YO filly Obsession was a standout juvenile for Frank Ritchie. An injury ruled her out of the spring 3YO opportunities, but her slashing second first-up to Nina From Pasadena on December 28th, followed by a win at Ellerslie on January 16th proved she’d lost none of her dash or competitiveness. Ritchie will target Obsession towards The Oaks in March, and though supremely confident she has the necessary ability, he is also conscious of the tight deadline leading into the March feature. Race Record - Obsession 2 wins-1 at 2-at 1200m, 1400m to 2009-10, ARC Darci Brahma at Karaka H., 2d ARC New Zealand Herald Christmas Carnival H., 4th Matamata Breeders' S., Gr.2.
Keepa Cruisin Keeper ex Just Cruising 4YO mare Already a Group One winner, her trainer Stephen McKee will seek to add further to Keepa Cruisin’s broodmare value by adding another win to her record. The main target this season for the group one winning half sister to Seachange is the Gr.1 Te Aroha Breeders Stakes in May. Race Record - Keepa Cruisin 3 wins-1 at 2-at 900m, 1600m, NZ$397,600, Levin Classic, Gr.1, WRC Desert Gold S., Gr.3, 2d New Zealand One Thousand Guineas, Gr.1, Taranaki 2YO Classic, Gr.3, Egmont RC Stoney Bridge S., Gr.3, ARC Soliloquy S., L, Waikato RC James & Annie Sarten Memorial S., L, Avondale JC Component Sheetmetals 2YO S., BOP RC Hills Haden Valuers 3YO H., 3d Te Aroha JC New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' S., Gr.1, ARC Eight Carat Classic, Gr.2, Wanganui JC Carters-Gib S., L, 4th Counties RC Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders' S., Gr.2-twice, ARC Newmarket H., L. Crossthestart Cape Cross – Startling Lady 4YO gelding The winner of seven from 23 starts, Crossthestart was second behind Zupacool in the listed Bendigo Cup last spring, before running second to Sterling Prince in the $250,000 Gr.3 VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Flemington in November. Queensland trainer Bevan Laming and will now look towards the upcoming Sydney and Brisbane carnivals for further stakes opportunities. Race Record - Crossthestart 7 wins from 1200m to 2150m, NZ$26,363, A$218,900, to 2009-10, BRC Ray White H., Avondale JC Governor General's Cup, Hawke's Bay Sunsmart 3YO H., Ipswich TC Optus Business Direct Ipswich Mile H., BRC The Beginning H., Blacks Trucks P., 2d VRC Queen Elizabeth S., Gr.3, Bendigo Cup, L, MRC Rogilla H., 3d Qld Tatt's RC Tattersall's Mile, L, BRC Paynter Dixon Queensland H., ARC Radio Sport 3YO H.
Oakwood Spartacus – Guardian Miss 3YO filly Spartacus filly Oakwood returned to work with trainer Richard Otto after an injury enforced break. Twice stakes placed, Otto rates the filly as top-class and consideration is now been given to taking her to Sydney or Brisbane in the Autumn. Race Record - Oakwood Winner at 2 in 2008-09, 2d Foxton RC Castletown S., L, Levin RC Ryder S., L.
Likeyourstyle Zabeel ex Calceolaria 3YO filly The Ralph Manning trained Likeyourstyle (pictured) got up in the last few strides to win on debut beating Latino Lady over 1200m, at New Plymouth on December 27th. Her $27 win dividend indicates the surprise result for punters, but Manning was far from surprised and rates this filly as group class. By Zabeel and a half-sister to Magnetism, Likeyourstyle has both the style and pedigree to suggest Manning’s judgement may once again be spot on! Race Record - Likeyourstyle Winner at 1200m in 2009-10 in NZ.
Latino Lady Spartacus ex Latin Lass 3YO filly Trainer Allan Sharrock has long held a good opinion of this filly and confidently predicted a win first-up at New Plymouth on December 27th. Jockey Michael Walker did his utmost to gain the desired result and looked the likely winner until Masa Tanaka weaved his way through the field to score late on Likeyourstyle. Next-up at Trentham on January 26th, Michael Walker and Latino Lady cleared maidens in convincing fashion taking out a 1200m race by 1.5 lengths. This filly is a sister to Karen Zimmerman’s talented gelding Spartanicus, and like him she is expected to improve with maturity as a 4YO. Race Record - Latino Lady Placed at 3 in 2009-10 in NZ
Lightly raced, Country Dane continues her progress towards a staying career. Trainer Roger James has taken a patient approach with her, and she now looks like stepping through the grades. Her first two starts over ground resulted in a bold run for third followed by a short neck second behind Senor Zorro at Ellerslie on January 2nd. Race Record - Country Dane Winner at 1600m in 2008-09, 2d ARC New Zealand Herald H., 3d ARC Blandford Lodge H., Twilight 9 December H., BOP RC Tauranga's 93.4 More FM H.
Spontaneous Spartacus – Solanto 4YO gelding Stakes placed at two in the listed ARC Champagne Stakes, Spontaneous recorded a Gr.1 placing when 2nd behind Altered Image in the Levin Classic. After racing well (with little luck) in a number of the 3YO stakes races Spontaneous was been sent to Michael Moroney’s Melbourne stable to continue his career and was a winner at Moonee Valley in the $70,000 MVRC Autocentro Mile Handicap on January 8th. Race Record - Spontaneous 2 wins at 1600m, 1800m, NZ$76,225, A$53,375, to 2009-10, MVRC Autocentro H., 2d Levin Classic, Gr.1, 3d ARC Champagne S., L, MRC Taralye Foundation Cup H., ARC Lindauer Brut Cuvee H., BOP RC John Warren Insurance 3YO H., Hawke's Bay Wine Country H. Caparison Cape Cross – Stever House 4YO mare The Mark Walker trained Caparison scored a winning double from Te Akau’s southern stable in the spring. Now fully matured, Walker is confident the mare is up to stakes class and will set her for two black-type races in February. Race Record - Caparison 4 wins from 1400m to 1950m to 2009-10, 2d CJC Travel Practice H., 3d CJC Ballantynes H., Worcester Tavern H.
Miss Curiosity Keeninsky – Kharlie Princess 2YO filly Miss Curiosity has been placed second at her two raceday starts, running home strongly each time. Her trainer Ralph Manning bekieves with natural improvement the filly could be a likely type to tackle the Gr.2 Matamata Breeders' Stakes in February.
Race Record - Miss Curiosity Placed at 2 in 2009-10 in NZ. Peace Lilly Bachelor Duke – Peace and Quiet 3YO filly The Ralph Manning trained Peace Lilly ran 3rd on debut at Taupo, beaten 1.8 lengths on December 30th and is another of Bachelor Duke’s progeny that looks to show above average ability. Placed at 3 in 2009-10 in NZ. UNRACED HORSES TO FOLLOW IN THE SUMMER AND AUTUMN Flower Girl Bachelor Duke – Rose of Ockie 3YO filly The Chris Wood trained Flower Girl has been to the trials twice, for two seconds. Her trainer rates her highly! Mastermind Traditionally – Moulin Rouge 3YO gelding Trained by Ralph Manning, and impressed winning two trials at 2YO. Keenly Keeninsky – Marlena 2YO filly Trained by Robert Priscott Unnamed Cape Cross – Just Cruising 2YO filly Full-sister to Seachange, trained by Ralph Manning. Unnamed Cape Cross – Stever House 2YO filly Full sister to Kelantan and Caparison, trained by Graeme and Mark Sanders. Unnamed Stravinsky – Khapkap 2YO filly Trained by Mark Walker. Unnamed Zabeel – Shadowplay 3YO filly Trained by Andrew Scott. Dick Karraman's Star Race Performers include:
Seachange Cape Cross – Just Cruising Dick Karreman’s champion racemare Seachange was born at The Oaks in 2002, arriving with a pair of front legs Rick Williams describes as ‘less than ideal.’ Her conformation made Seachange an early omission from the list of colts and fillies destined for the 2004 yearling sales. With the sales off the agenda, she was left to grow-out at a natural pace, before being put into work as a 3YO with Cambridge trainer Ralph Manning. Seachange showed immediate ability winning her first start in maiden class at Paeroa. Her rider that day was Gavin McKeon, who immediately recognized her as a filly ‘out of the ordinary.’ McKeon made it his business to visit Rick Williams soon after the win, making his high opinion of Seachange known, whilst also stating his desire to continue the association. For Seachange’s owner Dick Karreman, racing manager Rick Williams, trainer Ralph Manning and jockey Gavin McKeon; this was the beginning of a fairytale journey and an association which was to result in seven Group One wins. In beating New Zealand’s best on seven occasions at Group One level, Seachange was also placed five occasions at Group One level. Included among these placings were two Australian Group Ones; the Gr.1 VRC Myer Classic and Gr.1 MRC Futurity Stakes. Rated ‘unlucky’ by the Australian press when not winning the Myer Classic, Seachange had her chance of making amends in Australia prevented by the Equine Infuenza, which would have left her stranded were she to again visit Australia. Instead Seachange was to make her way on the international stage, venturing first to Dubai for the World Cup meet and then on to the United Kingdom. Her effort when sixth in the US$5 million Gr.1 Dubai Duty Free firmly cemented Seachange’s reputation as a ‘worldclass’ racemare. Seachange finished just 2.4 lengths from the winner Jay Peg in a field which included eleven international Group One winners. Jay Peg’s winning time that night was 1:46:2 for the 1770m, a new track record. Seachange’s own finishing time in sixth place, was said to be fast enough to have won any of the past runnings of the Dubai Dutyfree. On to Great Britain, under the care of new trainer Graeme Sanders, wet tracks foiled Seachange’s effort when unplaced in the Gr.1 Golden Jubilee Stakes and again in the Gr.1 Newmarket Falmouth Stakes over 1600m where she ran a brave fourth.
Retired following her international campaign, Seachange was bred to Zabeel and on December 5th 2009 foaled a colt which is destined for the 2010 yearling sales. Race Record - Seachange 14 wins from 1200m to 1600m, £10,740, NZ$1,240,250, A$299,000, 386,400Dhs, New Zealand One Thousand Guineas, Gr.1, WRC Telegraph H., Gr.1, Waikato Draught Sprint, Gr.1, Hawke's Bay Mudgway S., Gr.1-twice, Stoney Bridge S., Gr.1-twice, MRC Mannerism S., Gr.3, Hawke's Bay Zabeels Sports Bar & TAB H., WRC Catwalk Trust 3YO Fillies S., 2d VRC Myer Classic, Gr.1, WRC Telegraph H., Gr.1, Captain Cook S., Gr.1, MRC Futurity S., Gr.1, 3d Hawke's Bay Kelt Capital S., Gr.1, Waikato RC Foxbridge P., L, 4th Hawke's Bay Kelt Capital S., Gr.1, Newmarket Falmouth S., Gr.1.
