Bachelor Duke provides breeders a nice return on 2007 service fee at Karaka 2010

Bachelor Duke’s four Karaka Premier yearlings sold for an average of $76,250, with a top price of $105,000 for Seaton Park’s Lot 317 from the Cape Cross mare Cape Princess.  This average provides a return of nearly ten times his 2007 service fee of $7,000.

Lot 409 Bachelor Duke – Flying Firebird (Stravinsky) Colt.  Purchased from The Oaks Premier draft for $60,000 – buyer John Sargent.

Lot 463 Bachelor Duke – Jemima Jones (Star Way) Colt.  Purchased from The Oaks Premier draft for $60,000 – buyer Shaun Ritchie.

Bachelor Duke’s six Select yearlings averaged $33,583, and his four Festival’s averaged $29,500.  The Festival highlight for Bachelor Duke was Richfields Lot 1246, an imposing colt from the Kenfair mare Qui Richfield purchased by Trevor McKee for $45,000.

Asgoodasitgets – He’s GREEN... but TALENTED!

January 22 2010.

Bachelor Duke's 3YO gelding Asgoodasitgets is rated very highly by his trainer Stephen Marsh and looks to possess enormous talent.  The $1.90 favourite made short work winning his maiden over 1600m at Pukekohe on Wednesday, hinting he could perhaps be yet-another autumn stakes prospect for his sire.

Though very green, Asgoodasitgets was far too good for his opposition and despite the horse ‘gawking’ most of the way down the Counties straight his rider James McDonald kept him on a straight line to win untested.

With Asgoodasitgets holding a nom for the New Zealand Derby on March 6th, Marsh will need to continuing working his magic and further advance the geldings  mental development to have him ready for the big race in just six weeks time.

Owned by Dominic Li, Asgoodasitgets was purchased from The Oaks 2008 Premier draft and is out of the Gold Brose mare Fairy Crown, an unraced half sister to Keyora.

Bachelor Duke colt Keyora takes the Gr.2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas in impressive fashion

OCTOBER 4th 2009:  Saturday’s win by Keyora in the Gr.2 Hawke’s Bay Guineas saw Bachelor Duke record his first Southern hemisphere group win as a sire.  The winning style with which the good looking Bachelor Duke colt beat top filly St Germaine, suggests him as now a top chance to further his stakes tally when advancing to the 2000 Guineas at Riccarton next month.

Encouragingly, the form to come from the Hawkes Bay Guineas has always been seen as very strong - past winners include Tell A Tale in 2008, Alamosa 2007, Jokers Wild 2006 and Darci Brahma in 2005.

Keyora’s trainer John Wheeler was quoted in pre race discussions as ‘expecting Keyora to show further improvement as he steps the colt up further in distance as the season progresses.’

The winning manner in which Keyora ran home so strongly (from off-the-pace) over the 1400m on Saturday backing Wheeler’s opinion ‘that the mile at Riccarton will suit Keyora admirably.’

Post race, Wheeler revealed he’d always had a ‘big wrap on Keyora’ and that he’d just taken a little while to develop his ring craft, but now has the makings of a top quality racehorse.’

Bred by The Oaks Stud out of Fairy Lights (by Fairy King)

Bred at The Oaks, Keyora was purchased by John Wheeler at the 2008 New Zealand Bloodstock Premier Yearling Sale for $200,000 for connections: Eddie Bourke and his daughter Nicola, Matt Eliason, Jenny Washer, Allan Piercy, & Est Late B J Fleming.

The purchase intention was to secure the well bred colt as a stallion prospect – a plan which now looks one giant step closer to eventuating.

The well related Keyora, is a half-brother to New Zealand Derby runner-up Roman Chariot (Faltaat) and former top Japanese galloper Roc de Cambes (Red Ransom) and hails from the immediate family of Moon Solitaire, Germano, Pilsudski and Fine Motion

The Oaks Stud has a Darci Brahma colt from Fairy Lights heading to the Karaka Premier session in February.  A full sister by Darci Brahma was born at the stud in September, and the mare is to be bred to Bachelor Duke this season.

Bachelor Duke heads New Zealand’s Second Season Sires Table

After finishing last season as New Zealand’s leading first season sire, Saturday’s stakes win by Keyora puts Bachelor Duke at the top of the second season sire’s table on earnings – Bachelor Duke ($91,375) ahead of Savabeel ($48,200), High Chaparral ($42,463) and Kings Chapel ($22,450).  Figures: Arion Pedigrees October 6th, 2009

BACHELOR DUKE

LEADING FIRST SEASON SIRE 2008/09

AUGUST 1 2009:  Bachelor Duke has taken out the 2008/09 New Zealand First Season Sires Award finishing ahead of King’s Chapel, Savabeel, One Cool Cat, Handsome Ransom and Scaredee Cat.

This early achievement, a most encouraging start for the young Miswaki stallion; more-especially given he achieved his first season sire’s title from a first foal crop of just 51foals (his smallest foal crop too date).  With Bachelor Duke’s popularity increasing year by year, his 2nd and 3rd foal crops number 64 and 69 and there are 122 mares in foal to him this season.

“We are very happy with what we’ve seen to date and the signs are good,” said The Oaks General Manager Rick Williams.

“The trainers are saying they like his progeny.  They seem happy to give them a bit of time and generally expect them as three year olds to really begin to hit their straps.”

With a number of Bachelor Duke's impressive juvenile trials winners turned out to spell without racing, and 29 of his first crop colts and fillies still unnamed at the end of the two year old season, this adds weight to the opinion held by trainers that his progeny will be seen at their best as three and four year olds.

Bachelor Duke three year olds to watch for early this spring include: Prince of Wales (ex Serenity Princess by Encosta de Lago) – trainer Paul Moroney, Bewitch (Star of Flight by Marscay) – Andrew Scott, Keyora (ex Fairy Lights by Fairy King) – John Wheeler, Disarm (ex Amaroo by Zabeel) – Stephen McKee, Single Currency (ex Pennies in Heaven by Pompeii Court) – Chris Wood, Obsession (ex Mystery Creek by Kaapstad) – Frank Ritchie, Crystal Duke (ex Starfire Glow by Danasinga) – Kevin Hughes.

Obsession -  A bright spring 3YO prospect for Frank Ritchie

Obsession unwinds strongly down the outside for an impressive win on debut at Counties

The Dick Karreman owned and Frank Ritchie trained filly Obsession opened Bachelor Duke’s winning sires account in New Zealand with a stylish debut effort scoring at Counties on January 30th 2009.

Obsession, ridden by Michael Coleman, was slow to jump and showed herself green in the running, but once balanced in the straight she showed a touch of class unwinding strongly for a dominant win.

Obsession had showed immediate ability for Ritchie, scoring an impressive trials win by 3½ over 800m back in November.  Ritchie in seeing the filly as talented but immature decided then to take a patient approach and sent her immediately to the paddock after the trial win.

GROUP TWO -  MATAMATA BREEDERS STAKES

Following her winning debut, Ritchie stepped Obsession into Group company against the fillies in the Gr.2 Matamata Breeder’s Stakes raced on February 21st.  Her effort to finish fourth (3.7 lengths) on an unsuitably wet track impressed jockey Hayden Tinsley and reinforced Ritchie’s big opinion of the filly.

Ritchie was further impressed when hearing afterwards from Tinsley that Obsession had twice suffered interference early in the running at Matamata.

GROUP ONE – FORD DIAMOND STAKES

With the exciting promise shown by Obsession, Ritchie stepped her out next in the Gr.1 Ford Diamond Stakes at Ellerslie on March 7th.  This time on a dead track Obsession finished strongly along the inside to close to 1.8 lengths from the winner Kaaptan, with Seven Schillings, Corsage and The Heckler filling the minor placings.

A lovely striding filly, Frank Ritchie sees a big future at three for Obsession.  With the promise of firm footing, the Hawkes Bay spring carnival will be Ritchies immediate focus for Obsession.

Bewitch – Twice stakes placed for Andrew Scott including third the rich Karaka Million

Bewitch – surprised Andrew Scott with her precociousness and another Bachelor Duke likely to be seen out early as a spring 3YO

Andrew Scott’s Bachelor Duke filly Bewitch (pictured) has shown herself to be among the leading juveniles with a second placing on debut in the $55,000 listed Wellesley Stakes at Trentham and also a slashing run for 3rd in the $1,000,000 listed Karaka Million race at Ellerslie.

Bewitch battled bravely in the wet going to finish fifth (3.8 lengths) in the Gr.2 Matamata Breeder’s Stakes.  Like Obsession the filly prefer better going and will be another of Bachelor Duke’s progeny expected to be seen out as an early spring 3YO.

September 9th 2008 - Bachelor Duke’s half brother by Storm Cat fetches US$1.2 million

Lot 442 - the colt by Storm Cat from Bachelor Duke’s dam Gossamer went through the ring at Tuesday’s session of the Keenland September Sale selling for US1.2 million (sales average for the 146 yearlings sold at this session - US$392,534).

The colt purchased for his future racing and obvious stallion prospects.  The winning bidder was John Ferguson representing Sheik Mohammed of Darley Stud.

By Storm Cat from Bachelor Duke’s illustrious stallion producing family, the colt will be a valuable addition to Darleys stallion ranks should his racetrack ability match his pedigree.

Bred by Airlie Stud (Ireland) the colt was consigned by Tree Chimneys Farm.

First Season Group Winner for Bachelor  Duke

July 16th 2008 - Dermot Weld’s Luminous Eyes IMPRESSIVE in taking the Group III Silver Flash Stakes

Luminous Eyes and jockey Pat Smullen in front and cruising to an all-the-way victory in the Gr.3 event for juvenile fillys run at Leopardstown (Ireland)

The Oaks Stud's Group One Classic winning stallion Bachelor Duke notched his first stakes winner when front-running juvenile daughter Luminous Eyes (Bachelor Duke-Mood Indigo, by Indian Ridge) scored an impressive 2.5-lengths victory in the €70,000 Gr.3 Silver Flash Stakes (7 furlongs) for 2YO fillies at Leopardstown.

In this Group Three event she was ridden by Pat Smullen for top trainer Dermot Weld and defeated favourite Chintz (Danehill Dancer-Gold Dodger, by Slew O' Gold) & Mark Of An Angel (Mark Of Esteem-Dream Time, by Rainbow Quest).

Purchased for NZ$220,000 at the 2006 Goffs October Sale, Luminous Eyes had shown trainer Dermot Weld her potential when scoring at her second start by five and a half lengths. With further improvement the Bachelor Duke filly stepped up at just her 3rd start to land the Group Three in very good style – her winning margin a comfortable 2.5 lengths.
