The much-awaited inaugural New Zealand Bloodstock Racing Hall Of Fame inductee gala dinner was held in Auckland on 3rd March, 2006, and has been described by some attendees as one of the greatest celebrations of the racing industry's achievements ever held.

The inaugural event was the launch function for the exciting new Auckland Cup Carnival week which featured Cups races for the galloping, harness racing and greyhound codes and attracted international interest.

Inductees were chosen from right across New Zealand thoroughbred history, in two categories, Horses and People.

The Moonee Valley Racing Club of Melbourne identified its close relationship with New Zealand winners of the WS Cox Plate and inductees who had a winning involvement with the Cox Plate were presented with Cox Plate gold tiepins and ties by Norman Carlyon (former Chairman).

The inaugural Selection Committee, chaired by Don Hancock and comprising journalists, historians and industry professionals, completed its selection process and selected fourteen inductees.

These inductees were announced on the night which added to the anticipation and excitement of the event.
