OCEAN PARK OUTRIGHT FAVORITE FOR NZ DERBY 23 Jan 2012
After Boxing Day racing at Ellerslie we were talking up Ocean Park’s Telecom New Zealand Derby prospects after his desperately unlucky second in the $100,000 Great Northern Guineas (1600m).

After Saturday’s blistering 4 ½ length win over the same distance in the Group 3 Phil Cataldo Wellington Stakes at Trentham, the Trelawney- bred colt is now the $3 fixed odds outright favourite to win New Zealand’s premier classic on March 3.

His Matamata trainer Gary Hennessey, who shares the ownership with Hong Kong based partners Andrew Wong and Steve Yan, has no concerns about Ocean Park coping with the 2400m of the Derby.

He points to 2011 Derby winner Jimmy Choux and Ocean Park sharing the same sire in Thorn Park and the extra infusion of stamina provided by Zabeel, the sire of his dam Sayyida.

In her brief racing career which included two wins from five starts, Sayyida had showed exceptional promise but injury forced her into premature retirement.

However, the form of Ocean Park is shining through as a reflection of her own potential and in the sale-ring it has also been recognised with Ocean Park fetching $150,000 and her year younger filly by Iffraaj $290,000.

The first half of the 2011-2012 season has been most rewarding for Trelawney-breds and others who have figured in its sales drafts.
Antonio Lombardo was the spring flagbearer with wins in the Westbury Stud Challenge Stakes and, at group level, in the Hawke’s Bay Guineas and the James and Annie Sarten Memorial. Successes have continued to flow on both sides of the Tasman.

Notable recent Australian winners have been Pakari Toa (Darci Brahma-Alisara, Ire), who had a runaway debut win at Werribee and followed up with another at Moonee Valley at his only two starts for Mark Kavanagh and Bolton (Zabeel –Real Success), a brother to high class mare Vouvray. Bolton, who feteched $A425,000 when sold at the Sydney Easter Sales, won over 1700m at Flemington last Saturday and commentators are tipping him to go to better form.

Two graduates from Trelawney’s 2011 Karaka draft, Warhorse and Silk Pins, are prominent candidates for Sunday’s talent packed Karaka Million at Ellerslie and potential contenders for 2012 will be available for inspection at Karaka from Wednesday.

The Trelawney draft is stabled in Barn E and parades can be arranged on site or by contacting Brent Taylor on 021 949 644

History Repeats 5 Jan 2012
The merry time Trelawney Stud enjoyed at Christmas has been followed by an explosive start to the new year which highlighted the special winning vendor/buyer relationship Trelawney shares with David Ellis’s international Te Akau racing operation.

Te Akau’s Matamata stable, managed by Jason Bridgeman, provided Trelawney with its Ellerslie winner, Warhorse, while it was very much home thoughts from abroad when Mark Walker and jockey Opie Bosson proved the winning combination in Singapore with Flying Fulton. Both horses were clear-cut winners by more than two lengths.

Ridden by visiting Sydney jockey Nash Rawiller, Warhorse burst into strong contention for the Karaka Million when winning the $70,000 Stella Artois Eclipse Stakes L. By General Nediym from Rathlin Island, by Giant’s Causeway, Warhorse was sold at Karaka last year in the Trelawney draft on behalf of the stud’s vet and long time friend Jonathon Hope for $100,000.

Trelawney sourced Rathlin Island for Jonathon in Australia a couple of years ago when in foal to Fastnet Rock. The resulting foal was sold for $350,000 and now racing in Brisbane as Epona Princess, is also a Listed performer.

In partnership with Cambridge Stud, Jonathon will this year be offering Rathlin Island’s Zabeel filly as Lot 393.

Flying Fulton (Flying Spur – Fulton, by Zabeel), was a Stakes winner in New Zealand for Te Akau before going to Singapore. On New Year’s Day he recorded his second group success when winning the $153,140 New Year Cup Gr 3, the richest race on the programme.

The win was a notable start to the Singapore season for Mark Walker and also for Opie Bosson, once again Walker’s No. 1 rider after a great association with the trainer earlier in his career.

Trelawney congratulates Te Akau on its New Year’s Day successes and looks forward to yet again rubbing shoulders with David and his team at Karaka.

Pretty To Watch 29 Dec 2011
Trelawney Stud has taken on a classical glow after Christmas racing on both sides of the Tasman.

On Boxing Day at Ellerslie home-bred Ocean Park thrust himself into the forefront of New Zealand Derby discussions with a desperately unlucky second in the $100,000 Gr2 Great Northern Guineas (1600m), while in Brisbane another Trelawney product, Pretty Pins, recorded her fourth win on her march toward the Queensland Oaks.

Ocean Park (Thorn Park-Sayyida, by Zabeel), lost to Knight’s Tour by a mere head and, had Chad Ormsby been able to find clear air a fraction sooner in the straight, he would almost certainly have won.

Pretty Pins (Pins-Luna Tudor, Military Plume) is a half-sister to the Gr1 Toorak Handicap winner Allez Wonder and has now recorded four wins and three placings from seven starts. Her latest win over 2020m at Doomben on Christmas Eve is further encouragement she’ll cope with the 2400m of the Queensland Oaks, the long held goal of Patinack Farm.

Trelawney offers a yearling brother to Pretty Pins as Lot 302 in the Premier session of the National Yearling Sales at Karaka on January, 31.

Also winning her fourth race in Australia was the Peter Moody trained Granda Road (Encosta de Lago-Rationaine, by Centaine). Significantly it was Granda Road’s half-brother Amalfi (also bred at Trelawney) who gave Peter his first Gr1 winner when taking out the Victoria Derby.

Amalfi’s sister, Petit Verdot, is already the dam of the high-class Antonio Lombardo and Trelawney will be offering a filly by O’Reilly from her at Karaka. Also in the Trelawney draft is an O’Reilly colt from the same family, Lot 394, who ranks as a half-brother to Amalfi.

Moody struck another blow for Trelawney, when Zoomaina gave her rivals a five-length drubbing over 2000m at Caulfield. By Zabeel from Galapogos Girl, her granddam Reigntaine is an unraced sister to Centaine. With such impressive bloodlines the goal for Moody now is to put some black type on her CV as she races through the grades at 2400m or even beyond.

It was a case of bring on the Marton and Wellington Cups after Exquisite Choice’s Boxing Day second in the Dunstan Feeds Qualifier (2100m) at Ellerslie.

From the Roger James stable, Exquisite Choice is by Redoute’s Choice from Exquisitely, by Snippets and has won four of 20 starts. She should be in peak condition for her next two assignments and a lucrative career looks to be on the horizon. Trelawney will offer her half-sister by Alamosa in the Select section at Karaka.

Sayyida's potential at last realized 1 Dec 2011
Eleven-year-old broodmare Sayyida could be on the brink of providing widening smiles on the faces of Trelawney Stud proprietors Brent Cherry Taylor.

Back in 2003 the couple believed Sayyida was going to be a star and hopes were held she would flag this to the world in the $60,000 Avondale Guineas. But it was not to be. When having just her fifth start, after two of them had resulted in wins, she was badly galloped on and never raced again.

Last week at Ellerslie fond memories of Sayyida were rekindled when Ocean Park, her three-year-old son by Thorn Park, unleashed a devastating finish to beat even-money favourite Joy’s Choice in the Trevor Eagle Memorial (1500m).

It was an effort which suggests Ocean Park could be a serious contender for upcoming important races against his age group and he certainly has the family background. Sayyida claims Zabeel as his damsire and big names in the pedigree include, Courtza, (dam of O’Reilly), Hunza Court, Our Pompeii, Fixed Flush, nine-time winner Critic and ARC Easter Handicap hero Prince Kaapstad.

And, if ever a name was designed to put a smile back on a couple of Trelawney faces, its Ocean Park, named by his Asian owners for Hong Kong Kong’s famous nature and theme Park.

Situated at the southern end of Hong Kong Island, Ocean Park is one of the largest, most frequently visited and diverse ocean parks in the world – 170 acres of fun and laughter.

As with so many of Hong Kong’s social and recreational activities the Hong Kong Jockey Club is actively behind the enterprise, sponsoring a pair of giant pandas, Anan, the male, and Jiajia, the female.

Ultimately the Trelawney-bred Ocean Park will be fetched to Hong Kong by his owners, but meantime his future for the rest of the season in New Zealand could hardly be brighter.

Also on the upside for Trelawney last week was Sadist’s slashing second to Veyron at Group 3 level at Ellerslie. However, there was no luck for home-breds Antonio Lombardo in the Levin Classic after a bad getaway, or for Pretty Pins who had to settle for second in Brisbane after questionable riding tactics.

But hey, that’s racing.

Four two-year-olds sold on behalf of Trelawney Stud under the banner of Mana Park grossed $405,000 at New Zealand Bloodstock’s ready-to-run sale at Karaka.

Three were sons of former champion galloper Darci Brahma, whose first crop representatives are racing with such distinction, and the other by Elusive City.

Leading the quartet was Lot 200, from the Soviet Star mare Love Mary and representing a family studded with black type performers. The $160,000 he fetched was a significant increase on the $77,000 declined for him as a yearling. His future home is Queensland.

Ex-pat Kiwi and the dominant Singapore trainer for many seasons, Laurie Laxon, secured the Darci Brahma- Real Success colt for $130,000 which looked good buying for a half-brother to the Queensland Oaks winner Vouvray.

The half-sister to Group 1 Toorak Handicap winner Allez Wonder, by Elusive City, fetched $80,000 and high profile agent Paul Willetts secured the Darci Brahma-Thelma’s Decision colt for $35,000.

READY TO RUN.....we sure are !! 9 Nov 2011
Four colts, three by popular emerging sire Darci Brahma and another by the proven Elusive City, plus a filly by the champion Zabeel, give Trelawney Stud a dominant place in New Zealand Bloodstock’s ready-to-run sale at Karaka on November 15 and 16.

The five-strong draft will be marketed under the banner of Mana Park.

The oldest established nursery of champions in the Waikato, Trelawney is famous for producing seven Melbourne Cup heroes and a regular flow of high profile international performers from its sales drafts.

The up-coming ready-to-run sale marks the stud’s most serious entry into the two-year-old market and all five on offer are quality individuals with their futures backed by high performance pedigrees established in the world’s foremost racing jurisdictions.

In the order they will go under the hammer they are.-

LOT 30: The bay filly by Zabeel from the six-time winning stakes performer Altesino and a member of one of Australia’s outstanding black type families which includes champion three-year-old Zeditave ( 14 wins), Square Deal (9 wins), Allannon (8 wins), $1.6 million earner Military Rose and champion South African three-year-old Greys Inn. Sir Tristram figures on both sides of her pedigree and she offers huge residual value as a broodmare once her racing days are over.

LOT 200: A bay, almost brown colt by Darci Brahma from Soviet Star mare Love Mary, this fellow is a truly outstanding individual and probably as impressive as any that will be seen at the sales complex. Darci Brahma has done a great job in stamping his stock and now,as three-year-olds, they match their inherited good looks with their sire’s high level of performance. Famous names appearing in the pedigree of this individual include English and American Gr1 performer Crowded House, American Oaks winner and multiple group performer Ticker Tape and top performing NZ-based stallion Postponed.

LOT 205: This imposing colt is by Elusive City from Luna Tudor, by Military Plume. Among Luna Tudor’s 10 wins was the Perth Cup and at stud she has already produced the Toorak Handicap winner Allez Wonder to Redoubte’s Choice. Of even more topical interest is that Pretty Pins, a younger half-sister to this colt by Pins and raced by Patinack Farm, has won two of her first three starts and is already being hailed as a long-term prospect for the Queensland Guineas – a proposition endorsed by leading Brisbane jockey Jim Byrne.

LOT 277: A colt by Darci Brahma from the multiple Group performer Real Success, by Breeders Cup juvenile winner Success Express. Being a half-brother to the Queensland Oaks winner Vouvray, also placed in races like the Mackinnon Stakes, Ranvet Stakes, AJC Queen Elizabeth Stakes and Caulfield Cup, this fellow is bound to claim his full share of attention. He displayed a good turn of foot when recording 10.93 at the breeze-ups.

LOT 344: A half-brother to the highly performed Hong Kong galloper Taiji Spirits ($HK 4,210,100), this colt is another by Darci Brahma and is from the Noble Bijou mare Thelma’s Decision, who so far has produced five winners from eight to race. His second dam Lucky Witch, by Voodoo Rhythm, was a five-time winner in metropolitan company in Australia and her five winning foals include the stakes performers Lucky Diva, Spirit of Westbury, Gina Lollawitcha and Duke of Westbury.

This select draft of Ready to Run horses have been thoroughly educated and ready to join your racing team. They will be offered on behalf of Trelawney Stud by Mana Park who have presented our RTR draft for the past 4 years, they will be available for your inspection at Trelawney Stud until Friday 11th November and at Karaka from Sunday 13th at Barn E.

Sadist gives them a whipping 7 Nov 2011
Can-do-no-wrong apprentice Jason Collett was at it again at Te Rapa last Saturday with yet another treble.

As a bountiful last six months in New Zealand and Sydney continues, Jason brought his special brand of Joy to Trelawney at Te Rapa when he guided Sadist to a hugely encouraging win in the R80 event over 1600m.

The significance of the win for Trelawney was that Sadist is raced by proprietors Brent and Cherry Taylor and he claims as his dam Trelawney’s brilliant Marauding mare Dominatrix.

Sadist has won or placed in eight of his 12 starts for the John Sargent stable.

There has been long-time confidence Sadist could develop into a special galloper, but now four, he has taken a little time to get serious about his racing. However, the stylish way he accounted for his rivals at Te Rapa after dictating terms throughout, was a pretty clear message he has turned the corner.

At the 2012 edition of the National Yearling Sales at Karaka, Trelawney Stud will be offering an attractive half-sister to Sadist by Australian speed-machine Northern Meteor (Encosta de Lago), who stands at Widden Stud on behalf of Gooree Stud.

Raced by Gooree’s owner Eduardo Cojuangco, Northern Meteor holds the Randwick record for 1200m after running an earlier record at Canterbury when making his debut as a three-year-old from the Gai Waterhouse stable. He was retired after only nine runs because of his owner’s belief it is beneficial for stallions to be lightly raced.

Besides his blistering speed Northern Meteor boasts matching looks and was known around the Waterhouse stable as George as a staff tribute to actor George Clooney. With his celebrity status it is not surprising Flying Meteor commands a stud fee of $A33,000.

Trelawney’s Dominatrix filly belongs to his first crop.

By Marauding from a strong black type American family, Dominatrix won four of her seven starts, including the Pegasus Stakes (1000m) at Riccarton in 57.06 on a dead track. Her filly by Bernardini was bought by Peter Moody at Karaka this year for $300,000.

African Pulse - Wow 2 Nov 2011
The Melbourne Cup day magic which for so long has ridden side-saddle with Trelawney Stud was there again this year for client and friend Joan Egan when horses bred by her won at Flemington and Ellerslie.

African Pulse (Johannesburg-Bunya IRE, by Distance View) established himself as another potential star among Australian sprinting ranks, when comprehensively beating million dollar earner Karuta Queen over 1000m in a sizzling 57.58. At Ellerslie the aptly named November Rain, appreciating the deteriorating track conditions, out-finished her rivals in the $40,000 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m).

Offered through the Trelawney draft of the 2010 Select Session at Karaka, where he fell to the $130,000 bid of Paul Moroney, African Pulse races out of Mike Moroney’s Flemington stable.

He has now won two of his only three races. Though he had not started for over 20 weeks, African Pulse looked the standout in the field before the race and ran accordingly after a well-judged ride by Lisa Cropp.

A half-brother to African Pulse, by Lucky Unicorn, is being offered by Trelawney in the Select Session of the upcoming 2012 Karaka Sales.

The manner in which November Rain out-finished her rivals at Ellerslie has brought her into favour for the $200,000 DHL Counties Cup (2100m) on her home track at Pukekohe Park on November 19.

Joan Egan’s small broodmare band has been delivering consistently for her, with another of her breeding triumphs being the Karaka Million winner Fort Lincoln.

An impressive win by Daichi Dancer (Fusaichi Pegasus- Rogan’s Gem, by Orpen) at Te Awamutu has put a new focus on the Flying Spur-Rogan’s Gem filly Trelawney will be offering in its Premier Session draft for the upcoming Karaka Sales.

Daichi Dancer was bought as a yearling for $200,000 by his trainer Bruce Wallace who has always held him in high regard. It was therefore no surprise when he delivered, after being a trials winner and dropping back in class from the Eclipse Stakes won by Anabandana, to maiden company for his third raceday start. He is the first foal of his six-time winning dam, who in turn is a half-sister to high class Hong Kong galloper Able Prince and five-time South African winner Hurricane Queen.

You’re not hearing this first from us 25 Oct 2011
High profile Matamata trainer Peter McKay told the world on Trackside immediately after the running of the James and Annie Sarten Memorial Stakes at Te Rapa.

Trelawney Stud-bred Antonio Lombardo is probably better than former multiple Gr1 winning stable star Alamosa.

McKay was encouraged to make this vote of confidence after Antonio Lombardo’s clear-cut win over last season’s champion two-year-old Anabandana .

As accolades go, they could hardly get any better for Trelawney Stud’s latest rising star.

Alamosa won 10 of his 26 starts and was placed seven times for combined New Zealand and Australian stakes in excess of a million dollars. He was New Zealand’s champion three-year-old and at four won Australia’s coveted Gr1 Toorak Handicap (1600m).

Antonio Lombardo (Pins-Petit Verdot, by Carnegie) has now raced 12 times for six wins, four placings and $415, 315. He went into the Sarten Memorial as the decisive last-start winner of the Hawke’s Bay Guineas and fronting up to his third clash with Anabandana. At their previous clashes Anabandana had downed him by a mere nose in the Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes.

McKay is emphatic the colt has improved since his two-year-old days, but is bypassing the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas in favour of the closer to home Gr1 $250,000 Levin Classic on November 25.

At this stage plans don’t go beyond the Levin Classic but a joust with the older horses in the Telegraph Handicap is a race which could well come on the radar.

Two Trelawney sales graduates being pointed toward the Karaka Million, moved into the spotlight at Ellerslie when Silk Pins and Warhorse provided the quinella in the two-year-old event last Saturday.

Silk Pins (Pins-Silk Ending, by End Sweep), was offered at Karaka on behalf of breeder David Paykel with a reserve of $60,000 and it would seem the Whitby Bloodstock Trust have secured a bargain after the filly flagged her win with two successful trials.

Warhorse (General Nediym-Rathlin Island, by Giant’s Causeway), was offered at Karaka on behalf of Trelawney Stud’s veterinarian Jonathan Hope and was acquired by Te Akau Racing for $100,000.

Both youngsters have strong black type families backing their futures. Trelawney has a good record in the Karaka Million, with Wahid and La Italia being winners, while Antonio Lombado was second in the 2011 running.

RTR Breeze Up Draft 20 Oct 2011
Trelawney Stud’s coveted reputation for marketing winners at major thoroughbred sales is poised to make another positive step at the New Zealand Bloodstock’s Ready-To-Run sale at Karaka on November 15 and 16.
It will offer five highly credentialed two-year-olds under the banner of Maryanne Simon’s Mana Park, all of whom are back at Trelawney and available for inspection following the official breeze-ups at Te Rapa.
The scene-setter for the draft will be Lot 30, a bay filly by Zabeel from Altesino, by More Than Ready, who is Trelawney’s sole first day offering. The property of the Inglewood Partnership, she belongs to one of the most successful families in the Australian Studbook and is one of only three progeny of Zabeel in the sale.
She is the first foal of a six-time winner who also placed second in the Gr 3 Rotorua Cup. Close up in her pedigree are the likes of champion Australasian three-year-old of his year Zedative (14 wins and $1.2 million), South African champion multiple Gr1 winner Greys Inn, the Group performers Square Deal, Alannon, Zedegal and million dollar earning speedster Military Rose.
Besides her racing potential she has a built in residual value as a future broodmare. Her breeze-up time was 11.26 sec.
The depth of quality continues on day two when the Trelawney offerings in the Mana Park draft are Lots 200, 205,277 and 344.
Lot 200 is an October 25 colt by young sire of the moment Darci Brahma from the imported Soviet Star mare Love Mary (GB), who belongs to a family with an impressive list of European and American winners.
His dam is a placed half-sister to the high class international performer Crowded House and black type performers On Reflection, Riotous Applause and Forest Crown. Third dam Chapel of Dreams was a seven-time winner who earned US$643,912.
His breeze-up time was 10.87sec.
Lot 205, a colt by Elusive City from Luna Tudor, by Military Plume, has had a recent significant focus thrust on him by Pretty Pins, his three-year-old half-sister by Pins, who has won two of her three starts in Queensland for Patinack Farm and is being hailed as a long-range prospect for the Queensland Oaks.
Perhaps of even greater importance to prospective buyers is the fact that his dam numbered the Perth Cup among her 10 wins and has already produced the Toorak Handicap winner Allez Wonder. His breeze-up time was 10.87sec.
Lot 277, a colt by Darci Brahma from Real Success, by Success Express, will go into the ring with the backing he’s a half-brother to the Queensland Oaks winner Vouvray. A filly of great class, Vouvray also shone against the older horses at Gr1 level, finishing second in the STC Ranvet Stakes and third in the STC BMW Stakes and the VRC L.K.S.Mackinnon Stakes. Real Success herself was no slouch, winning six races and consistently performed well in Group company. His breeze up time was 10.93sec.
Lot 344, is the third of the Darci Brahma’s, being from the Noble Bijou mare Thelma’s Decision who is already the dam of five winners, including the big Hong Kong earner Taiji Spirit (by Soviet Star) who put together seven wins. His Breeze-up time 10.90sec.
Earlier ready-to-run graduates marketed by Mana Park on behalf of Trelawney Stud have included juvenile stakes winner and recent Singapore Gr 2 winner Flying Fulton and black type performer Anabaa’s Legacy.

Rippa fillies make for a Pretty Spring 18 Oct 2011
Two three-year-old daughters of Pins, Zippa The Rippa and Pretty Pins, kept a strong spring focus on Trelawney with significant October 15 wins at Morphetville and Eagle Farm.

Zippa The Rippa, a daughter of the eight-time winner and multiple Group performer Pernod, by Centaine, made it her second city win from three starts when scoring decisively at Morphetville for the syndication group, the BC3 Racing Club.

The style of her win has clinched a start in the Listed Gucci Stakes at Flemington on Oaks Day.

BC3 races 21 horses throughout Australia and in Singapore. Club membership, which includes an ownership share in the horses, costs $A7, 547 and there are no additional payments for three years.

The Melbourne –based operation, headed up by former high profile jockey Simon Marshall and Mark Gold, paid $250,000 for Zippa The Rippa, when offered by Trelawney at the 2010 premier session of the National Yearling Sales at Karaka.

A colt by O’Reilly from Pernod will be offered in Sydney at Easter. Like Zippa The Rippa, he is a half-brother to the Gr 3 Darley Plate winner Martini Red. A family of immense strength including former champion three-year-old filly Eastern Joy and Russian Pearl, almost $2.5 million in stakes.

Jockey Jim Byrne and the Gold Coast wing of the Patinack Farm operation were talking winter racing and the Queensland Oaks after Pretty Pins’ drubbing of the opposition over 1400m at Eagle Farm.

From Luna Tudor (Military Plume-Moon Storm, by Jungle Boy) Pretty Pins was acquired from Trelawney Stud on the same day as Zippa The Rippa went through the ring and cost $280,000 .

That there is confidence she will get the Oaks distance (2400m) is hardly surprising. Among her dam’s 10 wins was the Perth Cup (3200m). However, two wins from three starts, and the fact she is a half-sister to the Toorak Handicap winner Allez Wonder, suggests she is potentially much better than a plugger.

Following her latest win Byrne, a long-time star jockey in Queensland, described her as a filly with a big ticker and certain to improve with maturity.

Next month Trelawney has a half-brother to Pretty Pins by Elusive City in the ready-to-run sale at Karaka, while they will offer a full brother at the 2012 National Yearling Sales.

Lights of Heaven sparkles for Judi 12 Oct 2011
Seven Melbourne Cup winners is testimony to Trelawney’s influence on Australian spring racing and the influence continues.

The latest headline grabber is Lights of Heaven, who clinched the New Zealand Bloodstock sponsored four-race spring weight-for-age championship series with her third placing in the Gr1 Caulfield Stakes.

The Zabeel- I’m In Heaven mare went into the final leg of the series with eight points after finishing second to Whobegotyou in the first leg, the Gr 2 P.B.Lawrence Stakes, and the six she added with her third placing behind Descarado and Avienus clinched victory.

With the spoils went a $25,000 emerald and diamond clasp pearl necklace.

Lights of Heaven was born, raised and prepared for racing at Trelawney on behalf of her breeder and long time client and friend, Judi Wanless. With the mare’s trainer being Peter Moody, she has the unbeaten champion Black Caviar as a stablemate.

Trelawney’s draft for the premier session of the 2012 National Yearling Sales at Karaka includes a three-quarter sister in blood to Lights of Heaven, the result of a mating between I’m In Heaven and Zabeel’s high profile son Savabeel.

The four races comprising the New Zealand Bloodstock series were staged at Caulfield by the Melbourne Racing Club, had a collective value of $A1.15 million, were spaced between from August 13 to October 8 and were over distances ranging from 1400m to 2000m.

Another Mob hit to Antonio Lombardo 4 Oct 2011
There may be a dark side to Antonio Lombardo’s name, but only dazzling brightness regarding his future.
The manner in which the Trelawney Stud product won the DHL Global Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m) could only be described as scintillating and clearly points to him as one of the season’s most exciting three-year-old prospects.
By Pins from Petit Verdot (Carnegie-Rationaine, by Centaine), Antonio Lombardo claims both the equine pedigree and name to back his financial future. His dam is a sister to the VRC Derby winner Amalfi and his namesake a trusted advisor to America’s infamous Mafia crime boss Al Capone.
The defacto relationship Antonio Lombardo’s trainer Peter McKay has with Mafia legends is bringing in some handsome payoffs.
The Antonio Lombardo ledger is now standing at $370,000 as a result of five wins from 11 starts, with career highlights before the Hawke’s Bay Guineas being victory in the Gr1 Diamond Stakes at Ellerslie and a nod-of-the-head defeat at the hands of champion filly Anabandana in the Gr1 Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes.
From the same family as Antonino Lombardo, McKay’s Karaka Million winner Vincent Magano has won $778,000 and Joey Massino $290,000, a continuation of the crime family theme.
Crime boss Vincent Mangano was born in Sicily 1888 and died in New York in 1951. He headed up the Mangano crime family from 1931 to 1951 and went by the nickname of The Executioner. Joey Massino was known as Big Joey or The Ear. He was boss of the Bonanno crime family and worked closely with Murder Incorporated. Born in 1943, his CV read out in court when sentenced to life imprisonment in 2004 (still serving) included seven murders, arson , extortion, loan-sharking, illegal gambling, conspiracy and money laundering.
As rival trainers are finding out you don’t mess with Peter McKay’s mob on the racetrack.
Trelawney’s hopes in the New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Spring Classic rested with the John Sargent-trained Red Ruler (Viking Ruler-Ransom Bay (USA), by Red Ransom) who dead-heated with Hold It Harvey for second behind Cox Plate favourite Jimmy Choux.
The enterprise of Chad Ormsby in thrusting Red Ruler clear at the top of straight at a time when Jimmy Choux was still looking for clear air deserves top marks for enterprise. On another day it could well have been the winning of the race.
Bred by John Cornish and Trelawney Stud, Red Ruler was Lot 2 at the 2006 premier sale at Karaka and fetched $60,000. His earnings are just short of $1.6 million.

Flying Fulton 20 Sep 2011
First-year trainer Mark Walker notched his first Group success in Singapore when handy miler Flying Fulton (Flying Spur)landed the Committee’s Prize (Sing Gr 3, 1600m) at Kranji on Sunday, write Craig Brennan and Michael Lee.

Sent out as the $15 favourite in the 13-horse field, the Flying Spur five-year-old came off a handy spot for jockey Vlad Duric to first outgun race-leader and second-elect Arowana Dot Com (Hussonet) at the 200m before working home nicely to score by one length from a gallant Best Knight (King’s Best)with Singapore Derby (Sing Gr 1, 2000m) winner Clint (Casual Lies) turning in the eye-catcher of the race to pip Arowana Dot Com for third by a nose.

The winning time was 1:36.60 for the 1600m on the Short Course.

Walker, a five-time champion trainer in New Zealand and who held a mortgage on the feature races there, such as the Kelt Capital Stakes (Gr 1, 2040m) (three wins), was thrilled he had been able to savour his first feature success at his new backyard.

“It sure is a big thrill to win my first Group race in Singapore,”said the Kiwi conditioner. “Winning big races back home seems to happen all the time (he won 20 at Group 1 level), but it’s a bit of a struggle when you are in a new country. “It’s only our first season here and if you think about it, we’ve been punching well above our weight in the big races here.

“This horse (Flying Fulton) is very interesting because (Te Akau principal) David (Ellis) bought him at a Ready-To-Run in Karaka and paid a bit of money (NZ$210,000) for him. “He won a Listed race as a colt but after that his form dropped. It was a hard decision to geld him, but it turned out to be the best decision. David always buys beautiful athletes and this bloke is certainly one. He has come through as an older horse and I think he will improve further.”

Walker’s appetite for feature wins may now be whetted as the next big race on the mile is only two weeks away – the Panasonic Kranji Mile (Sing Gr 1, 1600m) on 2 October. “I think he is more of a 1600m-1800m horse. The Kranji Mile and the Raffles Cup (1800m) will be right up his alley,” he said. “But I’m not sure about the 2200m of the Gold Cup. It all depends what weight he gets in.” Flying Fulton, who was a veteran of 14 Kranji starts for four wins before his landmark win, was surprisingly ridden for the firsttime by Duric, who does team up with Walker a fair bit.

“Vlad rides a lot of trackwork for me and as he wasn’t committed to any horse, I gave him the ride,” said Walker. “We’ve clicked well together since I started training in Singapore. He’s riding in great form as you can see, and he rode him very well today.”
Duric will undoubtedly keep fond memories of the Committee’s Prize day as he not only took the honours with a four-timer and the win in the Group 3 race, but he also achieved a career milestone by riding his 200th Singapore winner with The Comedian (Encosta de Lago) three races earlier. “He deserved this win as he had been around the mark in some of the feature races as a four-year-old,” said Duric. “He’s going to be better for the run and I’m happy to be riding him. He puts himself in a nice spot during his races and he finishes his races off strongly.”

The ride aboard Flying Fulton came about when Moreira committed himself to the ride aboard Waikato a couple of weeks ago in a 1400m race that was eventually scrapped.
Walker asked Duric to ride the gelding in a trial and test him as a possible Triple Crown Series ride which, besides the Kranji Mile on 2 October, the Raffles Cup on 23 October, culminates with the $1.35 million Longines Singapore Gold Cup (Sing Gr 1) over 2200m on 13 November. “I jumped on him in the trial and I liked what I felt,” said Duric.

“He was well weighted under the conditions of today’s race and with improvement he’s going to be competitive in the weight-forage races (Kranji Mile and Raffles Cup) and we know he can run a trip. “What I wanted today was to be positive from the draw, to ride him well and get a result. “The race panned out the way I thought it would. That doesn’t happen often and it worked to my advantage today. “Mark has been a great supporter of mine since he first arrived here. I ride quite a few for him in the morning and he’s got a good team working for him. It’s good to be able to repay him with a good winner.”

Flying Fulton (5 g Flying Spur – Fulton, by Zabeel) has now registered five wins from 15 starts and has brought his stakes earnings past the $430,000 for the Te Akau Racing Stable.

Antonio Lombardo "kills them" at Ruakaka 14 Sep 2011
An evergreen family of the New Zealand Studbook, and one doing stellar service for Trelawney, captured the headlines again last week with Antonio Lombardo’s resounding win at Ruakaka.

After covering himself with glory as a two-year-old, Antonio Lombardo launched his three-year-old campaign with an electrifying five and a half length win in the $45,000 Listed Westbury Stud Challenge Stakes (1200m).

The win has pushed him right into the forefront of discussions surrounding the $85,000 Group 2 New Zealand Bloodstock Hawke’s Bay Guineas (1400m) at Hastings on October 1. However, trainer Peter McKay has already declared his intention to bypass the Group1 Two Thousand Guineas in favour of the Levin Classic which follows on November 25.

Factors McKay has taken into consideration include less stressful travel by avoiding a Cook Strait crossing and the smaller stakes margin this year between the two races. The Two Thousand Guineas has dropped from $1 million to $400,000, while the Levin Classic, which also has Group 1 status, has been upped to $250,000.

The race that last season stamped Antonio Lombardo as a young galloper of exceptional potential was the Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes in which he went under by a mere nose to the season’s champion two-year-old Anabandana. Before that he had won the Group 3 Waikato Stud 2YO Classic and the Listed Wellesley Stakes as well as finishing second in the Karaka Million.

So far his 10 starts have produced four wins and $315,000, already a highly profitable return on the $120,000 he cost as a yearling.

By Pins, Antonio Lombardo is from Petit Verdot (Carnegie-Rationaine, by Centaine), which makes his dam a sister to the VRC Derby winner Amalfi.

The family is peppered with high achievers like Rationaine’s own dam Rationale, a multiple Group performer, and others such as Wise Lass, Wise Son, Egoli Lass, Steely Dan, Gold Onyx and Prince Standaan who have made their mark in New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

Rationable (Housebuster-Rationale) produced Joey Massino ( O’Reilly) and Vincent Mangano ( No Excuse Needed) to provide the training career of Peter McKay with a massive and thoroughly deserved boost. She has also produced the multiple Australian Group performer Vigor.

Trelawney accessed the family when Brent Taylor secured the moderately performed Rationaine from former Sydney trainer John Morish through Bruce Perry and was quickly rewarded when she produced the classic winning Amalfi.

Trelawney will be offering colts at the 2012 yearling sales series by O’Reilly from Rationaine and by Encosta de Lago from Rationalize by O’Reilly. Petit Verdot will be represented by an O’Reilly filly at Karaka, while she has a colt by Mastercraftsman at foot and has already been served again by Pins.

Trelawney Golden Girl 1 Sep 2011
Trelawney Golden Girl
Roll, a four-year-old son of headline-grabbing stallion Savabeel, brought more glory to one of the golden girls of Trelawney’s broodmare band when exiting maiden ranks in South Australia on the final day of August racing.
In winning over 1600m at Balaklava, Roll provided his dam Carmel Valley (Last Tycoon-Diamond Stone, by Baguette), with her 11th individual winner from 11 starters.
Though only a two-time winner herself, Carmel Valley comes from Australian family which has provided a big list of significant winners on both sides of the Tasman and a raft of durable and successful broodmares.
Hill of Grace (by Zabeel) got Carmel Valley’s own breeding career off to a sizzling start when she was rated second on the New Zealand Three-Year-Old Free Handicap of the 1999-2000 and joint third top filly of the Australasian three-year-old classifications.
Her five career wins included the STC Gr.1 Ansett Australia Stakes and the Gr.2 Moonee Valley Oaks. Notable Gr1 placings included seconds in the New Zealand Derby, New Zealand Oaks, VRC Mackinnon Stakes and the STC Ranvet Stakes.
Further placings against top Australasian company took her earnings well beyond $1.5 million mark.
Outstanding among Carmel Valley’s subsequent progeny has been five-time winner Renewable (Zabeel), the most important of which was the Gr.2 Autumn Classic at Caulfield.
Trelawney has sold nine of Carmel Valley’s foals for an aggregate of just under $2 million and has retained two fillies to carry the bloodline on. Graeme Rogerson paid $160,000 for Roll on behalf of Melbourne’s famous Williams family which spends millions in search of Melbourne Cup winners.
Roll’s clear-cut win over 1600m at Balaklava was a good indicator he’ll manage longer distances and it could be a starting point to his own trek to the first Tuesday in November, perhaps not this year, but next.
Carmel Valley’s last foal is an unraced three-year-old gelding in Perth named Attention Todetail. Bought by Fred White at Karaka and will be in the care of master W.A. trainer Trevor Andrew . . . . . you would think he would be odds on to be a winner.

Hard-fought second for Antonio Lombardo in Gr.1 2 Apr 2011
In a field that had been labelled a one horse race Antonio Lombardo (NZ) (Pins) has put in a gallant effort to come second in the $200,000 Gr.1 The Oaks Stud Stallions Manawatu Sires Produce Stakes at Awapuni this afternoon.

The colt clearly won the start then proceeded to lead the field for the entire 1400m until, in what was a desperately close finish, he was inched out by a nose by the champion filly Anabandana (AUS) (Anabaa).

Opie Bossom, jockey of the winning filly, who recently rode Antonio Lombardo for his win in the Gr.3 Waikato Stud 2YO Classic said of today’s run “he just kept fighting back. It’s hard to get past him when he’s right.”

Trainer, Peter McKay graciously conceded the race to the super-filly but was adamant that other runners would figure and praised Antonio Lombardo’s efforts this season, “He’s a good horse, he’s done as well as he could all season and kept stepping up to what we asked of him. He’ll go out now and come back as a better three year old”. In his debut season Antonio Lombardo has had nine starts for three wins and three seconds including in the Karaka Million and accumulated over a quarter of a million dollars in earnings.

McKay purchased Antonio Lombardo for $120,000 from Trelawney Stud’s 2010 premier yearling draft. He is out of Trelawney mare, Petit Verdot (NZ) (Carnegie), a full sister to VRC Derby-winner Amalfi and a daughter of Rationaine (NZ) (Centaine). This pedigree page features the likes of Rationale (NZ) (Sound Reason), Wise Lass (NZ) (Straight Strike), Egoli Lass (NZ) (Kaapstad), Vigor (NZ) (O’Reilly) and the 2008 and 2010 Karaka Million winners, Vincent Mangano (NZ) (No Excuse Needed) and Joey Massino (NZ) (O’Reilly).

Trelawney Stud is offering a half-brother to Antonio Lombardo at the Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney next week. Lot 402; a colt by O’Reilly.

Queensland based Kiwi peaks with Group One victory 28 Mar 2011
By Dennis Ryan for NZTM
For many years Australia has been home to New Zealand-born Judi Wanless, but her unbeaten filly Lights Of Heaven (NZ) (Zabeel) has lately provided ample reminder of her homeland.

On Saturday at Adelaide’s Morphetville racecourse, Lights Of Heaven (NZ) took her unbeaten sequence to four in the best possible manner with victory in the Gr. 1 Schweppes Australasian Oaks (2000m). The Peter Moody-trained filly has had a meteoric rise, graduating from a Cranbourne maiden in late January to midweek Sandown company, then to the Gr. 2 Moonee Valley Classic and ultimately Saturday’s fillies’ classic.

“It’s my proudest achievement as a breeder,” Judi Wanless said from the Brisbane office at her family’s recycling business Wanless Enviro Services. “My husband Ron and I did win the VRC Derby with Amalfi, but we didn’t breed him. To own and breed a Group One winner is something else.”

Amalfi (NZ) (Carnegie), the winner of the Flemington Classic, will always hold a special place in the affections of the Queensland couple. It’s through that horse that they developed a lasting relationship with the Taylor family at Cambridge’s Trelawney Stud, where Amalfi was bred, as well as confirming their belief in former Queenslander Peter Moody.

“Amalfi was Peter’s first Group One winner when he set up in Melbourne and it’s been wonderful watching his career develop,” says Mrs Wanless. “He’s a top trainer of top horses.”

A round trip from Brisbane to Adelaide on Saturday did nothing to lessen the enjoyment of Lights Of Heaven’s big win. “Our grand-daughter Brooke came with us, so that added to the fun seeing her at 18 starting to share our involvement in racing.”

Lights Of Heaven (NZ), the 41st individual Group One winner by her great sire Zabeel, is the third foal of the Volksraad mare I’m In heaven (NZ), the winner of six in Brisbane and Melbourne and a sister to the Gr. 3 Highview Stakes winner Eloa (NZ) (Volksraad). This is also the family of top class galloper Alamosa (NZ) (O’Reilly).

I’m In Heaven is one of several Wanless-owned mares that reside at Trelawney Stud. Other breeding successes have been the black-type winners Gondorff (NZ) (Montjeu) and Celeris (NZ) (Fusaichi Pegasus).

“Our relationship started with Amalfi and it’s gone on to be very rewarding,” said Judy Wanless. “It’s become a friendship and it’s been a wonderful journey having our mares at Trelawney and getting such valuable advice from Brent (Taylor).”

Plans for Lights Of Heaven (NZ) are undecidedfor the short term, with a possibility she may travel to Sydney for the AJC Oaks, but her owner will leave it to the horse herself and Peter Moody to decide that.

“She’ll tell us what she’s up to but Peter’s been very patient and that will continue. Given what she’s done so far I’d like to think she might be some chance for a race like the Caulfield Cup, but that’s still only a dream at this stage.”

Hat trick for Lights Of Heaven 7 Mar 2011
Zabeel filly Lights Of Heaven is now three for three in her debut season after taking out the Gr.2 Sportingbet Fillies Classic (1600m) at Moonee Valley on Friday evening. The win follows an impressive seven length maiden victory at Cranbourne in January and has trainer, Peter Moody excited for next season.

Moody told Racenet “We’ll have the maturity of a four-year-old Zabeel mare that is going to be relatively untapped come the spring”. For now however Moody plans to give the three-year-old a gentle autumn to give her time to mature.

Lights of Heaven (NZ) out of the six-time winning Volksraad mare I’m In Heaven, who is a sister to the Gr.3 winner Eloa (NZ). This if the family of Alamosa, the four time Group One winning sire now standing at Wellfield Lodge.

For long-time Trelawney client Judi Wanless, the filly’s breeder and owner, this win is latest in what has been a great season. She also bred Gondorff (Montjeu) who won the Listed Kalgoorlie Boulder Cup, Celeris (Fusaichi Pegasus) winner of the Listed Levin Stakes, Princess Annaliese (Van Nistelrooy) winner of the Listed Wairarapa Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes along with breeding and racing Gr.2 winner Returntosender (Elusive City).

“Judi has four mares with us at Trelawney and she has bred five group and stakes winners out of those mares in the last 18 months; a fantastic achievement for any breeder” says Brent Taylor, Managing Director at Trelawney.

Group win for Antonio Lombardo 21 Feb 2011
Outstanding 2YO Antonio Lombardo (NZ) (Pins) one-upped his last-start performance to score an impressive win in the $70,000 Gr.3 Waikato Stud 2YO classic (1200m) at Pukekura Raceway on Saturday. The colt held off Australian- trained Chateauneuf Dupape (NZ) (Darci Brahma) to win his first Group race.

The Group win is a welcome reward after coming second by a nose to Fort Lincoln (Charge Forward) in the Karaka Million in January. The colt has now won 3 of his 7 starts including the Listed Life Members’ Wellesley Stakes and has amassed over a quarter of a million dollars in earnings in his debut season. This weekend’s race also scored his connections a $30,000 bonus through the TBS Scheme.

Antonio Lombardo is a graduate of Trelawney Stud’s 2010 premier yearling draft where he was purchased by Matamata trainer, Peter McKay for $120,000. He is out of Trelawney mare, Petit Verdot (NZ) (Carnegie), a full sister to VRC Derby-winner Amalfi and a daughter of Rationaine (NZ) (Centaine). This pedigree page features the likes of Rationale (NZ) (Sound Reason), Wise Lass (NZ) (Straight Strike), Egoli Lass (NZ) (Kaapstad), Vigor (NZ) (O’Reilly) and the 2008 and 2010 Karaka Million winners, Vincent Mangano (NZ) (No Excuse Needed) and Joey Massino (NZ) (O’Reilly), both of whom were also trained by McKay.

McKay plans to line the colt up for the $200,000 Group One Diamond Stakes (1200m) during Auckland Cup Week.

Trelawney Stud will offer a half-brother to Antonio Lombardo at the 2011 Australian Easter Yearling Sale in April; Lot 402, a colt by O’Reilly.

Red Ruler gets his Group One 14 Feb 2011
By NZB
Red RulerUp until Saturday the coveted Group 1 victory had eluded top stayer Red Ruler, but all that finally changed with an outstanding performance in the $200,000 Group 1 Darci Brahma International Stakes (2000m).

Trained by John Sargent, Red Ruler (Viking Ruler x Ransom Bay) was made to fight in the straight after travelling in the box seat in transit. Showing plenty of courage in the final 300 metres, the son of Viking Ruler was not to be outdone, staving off the dual Group 1 winner Booming (Don Eduardo) and the late finishing Passchendaele (Montjeu) to win by three-quarters-of-a-length.

A true campaigner, Red Ruler has lined up in no fewer than 22 Group 1 races, competing all over New Zealand and Australia in races including the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, New Zealand and AJC Derbies, Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Kelt Capital Stakes, Mackinnon Stakes and many more.

His feature wins before Saturday's race included three victories at Group 2 level, including the City of Auckland Cup and the Wellington Cup, and trainer John Sargent was thrilled to see him notch up his first Group 1 win.

"He's a top horse, he has raced in so many top class contests and has run second in Group 1 races including the Kelt Capital Stakes and the AJC Derby.

"He put in a big performance on Saturday and ran a very strong race and he has never looked better.

"He has pulled through the race in great order so we will be looking to the New Zealand Stakes or the Auckland Cup for his next assignment. We will be taking it one step at a time but it would be great to see him over in Hong Kong and Singapore running in the invitational races in April as well."

Red Ruler was bred by John Cornish & Trelawney Stud and was bought by his trainer John Sargent from Trelawney Stud at the 2006 Karaka Premier Sale for $60,000. The six-year-old is owned by local and international owners in Ron Arculli, Andrew Meehan & Guy Sargent and has raced on 43 occasions for nine wins and nine placings for over $1.5 million in stakes.

Red Ruler is the eighth individual Group 1 winner for New Zealand Bloodstock this season and he holds a nomination for the Group 1 Auckland Cup on 9 March where he is currently rated a $12 chance with the TAB.

Miss Confidential in contention for the Karaka 3YO Mile 18 Jan 2011
Antonio LombardoSaturday’s Hollymount Bloodstock Class 2 Handicap (1200m) at Kembla Grange saw Miss Confidential win her third race from four starts for trainer Mark Wallace. The filly by Stratum is registered for the Karaka 3YO Mile and the weekend’s win should ensure her a strong position in the order of entry for the $200,000 race at Ellerslie on January 30th.

Miss confidential was bred by Trelawney Stud from resident mare Exquisitely (Snippets) and was sold through the 2009 Select yearling draft to Blue Sky Thoroughbreds for $100,000.

Also carrying the Trelawney Brand at Ellerslie will be Antonio Lombardo in the hotly contested Karaka Million. The 2YO colt by Pins has had a successful season so far with two wins including in the Listed Wellesley Stakes and close up performances in the Listed Murdoch Newall Stakes and Group 3 Eclipse Stakes. His earnings of close to $38,000 have put him at the lead of the order of entry for New Zealand’s richest juvenile race.

Trelawney will also be well represented this weekend at Trentham with two graduates in the running for the Group 1 $1,000,000 Telegraph Handicap; last start Group 1 place-getter, Tip The Wink (Stravinsky) and this season stakes winner Celeris (Fusaichi Pegasus). Also racing on Saturday will be Trelawney owned gelding Sadist who will contest the Group 3 $70,000 Wellington Stakes.

A great start to the New Year 5 Jan 2011
AhdashimTrelawney Stud graduates have seen a fantastic start to 2011 with horses carrying the Trelawney brand putting in some superb performances over the New Year holiday.

Across the Tasman a graduate of the 2007 Trelawney Premier sales draft, Ahdashim, won the $200,000 Group 3 Standish Handicap at Flemington on New Year’s Day. The five-year old by Elusive City (USA) out of Clinique (Dance Floor) was purchased by Sydney trainer Gerald Ryan for $150,000.

Ryan said Ahdashim would possibly return to Melbourne for the Newmarket Handicap. "He may be a lightweight chance in the Newmarket," Ryan said. "The horse has been going terrific; he deserves to win a good race. He's been placed behind some good horses and if you take the wet track runs out of his form, he's a very honest, consistent horse."

So Pristine (AUS) a five year old mare by Zabeel, produced a big finish to win the $75,000 Dunstan Feeds Championship Final at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. Bred and raced by long-time Trelawney clients David and Angela Paykel, So Pristine is out of Pristine Kristine (USA) (Spinning World), a Singapore stakes producing mare. Ready to Run Sale of 2YOs - Breeze Up results 22 Oct 2010
Trelawney Stud is offering seven colts in the New Zealand Bloodstock 2010 Ready to Run Sale of two-year-olds on the account of Mana Park. The colts are being prepared by Darryn Weatherly and had their first opportunity to perform at the Breeze Ups at Te Rapa Racecourse on Tuesday.

Their times were 10.78 seconds and 10.81 seconds respectively. Darryn commented that both horses had responded well to the pressure and hit the line full of running.

The fastest Breeze Up time of the seven horses was provided by Lot 58, a bay colt by California Dane from Snipped in the Bud who stopped the clock in a smart 10.60 seconds.

Lot 181 saw two sons of Fast ‘n’ famous go head to head. Lot 181 from Group Two winner Astralita had a time of 11.12 seconds while Lot 318, from High Tudor, a half sister to Trelawney Group One winner, Allez Wonder, was right behind him with 11.13 seconds. Darryn said “they are both very nice types with good attitudes”.

A son of Pins, Lot 317 is out of Group Two winning mare Highflying. This chestnut colt completed the 200 metres in 11.03 seconds. Partnering him in heat 199 was a colt by Strada from Andneedles with a time of 11.06 seconds. Darryn reported “both horses have nice strides and have improved a lot from day one. We’re very happy with their times as they still had more to give”.

Darryn says of the Trelawney graduates “we were very impressed with all of these horses’ attitudes, condition and how far they have come”.

The 2010 Ready to Run Sale of two-year-olds will be held on the 16th and 17th of November at Karaka. For further information contact Brent Taylor on 021 949 644 or for inspections contact Maryanne Simon at Mana Park on 021 184 8530.

Trelawney salutes Melbourne Cup history 11 Oct 2010
By Rosie Woods
Melbourne Cup trophies on display at Trelawney StudMelbourne Cup fans from the New Zealand racing community descended on Trelawney Stud on Sunday to celebrate the stud’s remarkable Melbourne Cup history and for the unveiling of a sculpture as tribute to that success.

The stud has produced seven Melbourne Cup champions so far, with the winners Hiraji in 1947, Foxzami in 1949, Macdougal (1959), Hi-Jinx (1960), Polo Prince (1964), Galilee (1966) and Silver Knight (1971).

The event was also to commemorate the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup with a conjugation of delegates attending from the Victoria Racing Club as part of the Cambridge leg of the 2010 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour. This year’s coveted trophy along with five of the trophies from past New Zealand bred Melbourne Cup winners were a feature of the afternoon.

Representing the VRC, 2010 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour Manager, Joe McGrath said: “We are thrilled to share the 150th Melbourne Cup celebrations with the world famous Cambridge. This milestone year offers the VRC an opportunity to pay tribute to the heroes, stories and destinations that have shaped the history of our nation’s great race and Cambridge is certainly a vital link producing a great number of Melbourne Cup winners”.

Escorting the trophy as Tour Ambassadors were champion jockey, Mr John Letts who rode Piping Lane to Melbourne Cup victory in 1972 and Beldale Ball in 1980, and Sheila Laxon, the first female trainer to win a Melbourne Cup with Ethereal in 2001 who provided guests with an exclusive insight into their personal memories and experiences.

Racing Minister, John Carter joined the stud’s owners, Brent and Cherry Taylor in unveiling a sculpture by Australian artist Jane Dawson, while Special guests throughout the afternoon’s events included Cambridge Studs, Sir Patrick and Lady Justine Hogan; local Minister of Parliament, Louise Upston; Waipa Mayor, Alan Livingston and former Racing Minister Winston Peters; VRC guests included Chief Executive, Dale Monteith; Deputy Chief Executive Sue Lloyd-Williams; and Marketing Manager, Joe McGrath.

Others with connections to Melbourne Cup winners present were Victoria and Petrea Vela (Ethereal, 2001), Tim and Karen Bodle (Empire Rose, 1988), Alicia Moroney (Brew, 2000), Andrew Fyfe (Van Der Hum, 1976), John and Wendy Norwood (Silver Knight, 1971), Warwick and Heather Spring (Rising Fast, 1954), Trevor Knowles (Hi Jinx, 1960), Ron Taylor (Polo Prince, 1964) and a Mike and Vicky Sanders who represented the Barry Family of Hastings who hold the 1916 trophy won by Sasanof; a fascinating piece of Melbourne Cup memorabilia.

Of the farm’s intrinsic relationship with the Melbourne Cup, Brent Taylor said: “Whilst the history of the farm is remarkable I am sure that history is on-going and we continue an outstanding annual flow of Group winners, one of which will one day be the 8th Trelawney graduate to win the Melbourne Cup. We the Taylor family, are proud to be the custodians of Trelawney’s iconic heritage and are dedicated to its continuance”.

Trelawney Stud has produced a publication documenting the history of the farm and its Melbourne Cup winning horses. To obtain a free copy please email rosie@trelawneystud.co.nz or call +64 7 827 8581.

The Leading Apprentice Award was sponsored by Trelawney Stud and Cherry Taylor presented James with a saddle and jacket.

Black type racing underway for Trelawney graduates 17 Sep 2010
by Rosie Woods
This Saturday will see three Trelawney Stud graduates contest group and listed races in Australia.

Red Ruler (NZ) (Viking Ruler) will start in the Gr. 1 Rokk Ebony Underwood Stakes (1800m) at Caulfield. The six-year-old gelding is trained by John Sargent who purchased him from the 2006 Trelawney Stud premier yearling draft at Karaka. Sargent paid a bargain $60,000 for the horse that has gone on to win seven races and over $1.28 million in stakes. Red Ruler is nominated for the 2010 Emirates Melbourne Cup and if successful will be the eighth winner of the race to carry the Trelawney brand.

Also at Caulfield, La Rocket (NZ) (Rock of Gibraltar) will line up for the Gr. 1 Patinack Farm Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m). Trainer, Dale Sutton, will be looking to emulate the form of the gelding’s last group start when La Rocket won the Gr. 2 St. George Stakes in February. La Rocket is out of Trelawney Stud resident mare, La Bella Dama (NZ) (Desert Sun) who won seven group and listed races in her career. La Rocket is a graduate of the Trelawney Stud 2005 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling draft where Sutton purchased the colt for A$300,000. La Bella Dama will be represented in the 2011 Karaka Premier Sale by a filly by Iffraaj.

The consistent Trelawney graduate, Gondorff (NZ) ( Montjeu) is aiming to make history repeat after being successful in the Listed Goldfields Expo-Boulder Cup (1760m) last weekend. He came second in the same race last year then went on to win the Listed XXXX Gold Kalgoorlie Cup (2300m) the following week. Gondorff is set to defend his win in Cup tomorrow and if successful will be the first horse to win the race two years in a row.

Trelawney colt leads the chase for Karaka Million 15 Sep 2010
by Rosie Woods
A convincing three length win in the 100% Barrells 2YO (880m) at Ruakaka on Saturday has propelled Antonio Lombardo to the head of the order of entry for the 2011 Karaka Million; New Zealand’s richest two-year-old race.

The colt by Pins is a graduate of Trelawney Stud’s 2010 premier yearling draft where he was purchased by Matamata trainer, Peter McKay for $120,000. McKay has retained Antonio Lombardo to race himself and is off to a strong start with the colt also being placed second in the Danfive at Grangewilliam 800m at Wanganui the previous week.

The final field for the Karaka Million, to be run on January 30th at Ellerslie, is determined according to prize money won; Antonio Lombardo currently sits on $8,975, $6,775 ahead of his closest rival in the table, French Connection.

Antonio Lombardo is out of Trelawney mare, Petit Verdot (NZ) (Carnegie), a full sister to VRC Derby-winner Amalfi and a daughter of Rationaine (NZ) (Centaine).

Petit Verdot has a 2009 colt by O’Reilly who will be offered by Trelawney Stud at the 2011 Australian Easter Yearling Sale and has just last week foaled a filly, also by O’Reilly.

Gondorff (NZ) on Target for Dual Kalgoorlie Cups 13 Sep 2010
NZTM
Gondorff (NZ) (Montjeu) is on track to become the first horse to win dual Listed XXXX Gold Kalgoorlie Cup’s (2300m) after an impressive win in the Listed Goldfields Expo-Boulder Cup (1760m) yesterday.

The $2.50 favorite flashed home to win by two and a half lengths, in the hands of jockey Troy Turner.

The seven-year-old son of former Windsor Park Stud shuttle sire Montjeu, ran second in the same race last year and went on to win the Listed XXXX Gold Kalgoorlie Cup (2300m) the following week.

Gondorff (NZ) was bred by Mrs J M Wanless and is out of My Funny Face (Marscay). He was bought by Mr D O’Brien (Victoria) for $200,000 at the New Zealand Bloodstock 2005 Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Trelawney stud. He has since amassed earnings of A$425,400.

Trained by Western Australian Harness Racing driver Mark Reed, he is the winner of seven races, including the Gr.3 WATC Queen’s Cup (2400m).

The Listed XXXX Gold Kalgoorlie Cup (2300m) will be run on Saturday September 18.

Red Ruler wins Champion Stayer 4 Sep 2010
by Rosie Woods
Red Ruler was awarded Champion Stayer at New Zealand’s annual Mercedes Thoroughbred Racing Awards for the 2009-10 season, held at the Ellerslie Event Centre on Friday night.

Red Ruler captured 36 of a total 40 votes to beat Harris Tweed for the title.

A graduate of the 2006 Trelawney yearling draft, the son of Viking Ruler was purchased by John Sargent and has gone on to win seven races and over $1.28 million in earnings. His wins for the season in contention included the Group 2 Wellington Cup, Group 3 Trentham Stakes and the Group 2 City of Auckland Cup.

Red Ruler is now in Australia preparing to contest the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. The 6 year old gelding was unfortunately scratched at the gates last week at Caulfield so will have his first run of the campaign this afternoon at Flemington in the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes over 1600m.

Trelawney graduates finalists for Horse of the Year 9 Aug 2010
by Rosie Woods
BoundlessNew Zealand Thoroughbred Racing has announced the finalists for the 2009-10 Mercedes Thoroughbred Racing Awards including three graduates of Trelawney Stud.

Nominated for Champion Three Year Old is Zarzuela. The 2006 daughter of Zabeel (NZ) (Sir Tristram) was born at Trelawney Stud and bred by David and Angela Paykel out of his Group One-winning mare, Star Satire (NZ) (Volksraad).

Zarzuela’s successes of the most recent season include multiple Group-wins comprising the Championship Stakes, New Zealand Great Northern Guineas and the Waikato Guineas. She also ran third in the Group One New Zealand Oaks, going down to Keep the Peace and fellow Trelawney graduate, November Rain, in a photo finish. The filly will start the new season out of Peter Moody’s Stable at Caulfield and with a bit of luck add some Australian conquests to her form.

The next finalist, Red Ruler, graduated from the 2006 Trelawney yearling draft and is nominated for Champion Stayer. Bred by the Stud in partnership with John Cornish the colt by Viking Ruler (AUS) (Danehill) was sold to John Sargent for what was considered a bargain at $60,000. He has since gone on to win seven races and over $1.28 million in earnings.

2009-10 Group-achievements for Red Ruler include winning the Wellington Cup, Trentham Stakes and the City of Auckland Cup. The gelding also fought on to run second in the Group One Zabeel Classic in December. Red Ruler, who holds a nomination for this season’s 150th running of the Melbourne Cup, is heading across to Australia for the Spring Carnival and if successful, will be the eighth winner of the Cup to have been bred at Trelawney Stud.

Also nominated for Champion Stayer is Trelawney Stud mare, Boundless. Not only was this mare bred and sold by Trelawney, she is by Van Nistlerooy (USA) (Storm Cat) who stood at the stud; Boundless was his first Southern Hemisphere Group One winner. Moreover, co-breeder, Cherry Taylor, retained shares in the mare to race which proved extremely worthwhile as now the Group-one winner has returned to Trelawney for the 2010-11 breeding season.

Nevertheless, prior to retiring, Boundless had a successful 2009-10 racing season taking out the Hawkes Bay Gold Cup, Counties Cup and the Nicolas Feuillatte Stakes bringing her career total to nine wins and four placings including runner up in the Group-one AJC Oaks.

Managing Director, Brent Taylor, commended the finalists, “although it is fantastic to have performers in our main market, Australia, it is also very pleasing that our New Zealand form is holding up with the accomplishments of horses like Boundless and Red Ruler both domestically and across the Tasman. We hold high hopes that Zarzuela will also have a successful season in Australia. It is great to have three representatives performing for the brand and we would like to wish the connections the best of luck for the night; all three finalists deserve their nominations and are strong contenders to take home the award.”

As finalists in their particular horses-in-training categories all three horses will be in contention for the Mercedes Horse of the Year. The awards are to be held at Ellerslie Racecourse on the evening of Friday, 3 September 2010.

Trelawney's Inglis Easter Yearling Draft Possibly the Best Yet 23 Mar 2010
A top-class selection of the best bloodlines Australasia has to offer are featured among Trelawney Stud's classic draft to the upcoming Sydney Easter Yearling Sale.

The Cambridge nursery's Brand of Success will be carried by six outstanding youngsters with the looks to match their pedigrees at the Inglis auction at Newmarket from April 6-8.

Champion sires Zabeel, Redoute's Choice and Encosta de Lago are represented along with heir apparent Fastnet Rock and the prolific Flying Spur. "As individuals they speak for themselves - great types from superb families - and make up as good a draft, if not better, than we've ever taken to Sydney," said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud.

Photographs of the Inglis draft can be viewed on the stud’s website at www.trelawneystud.co.nz in the ‘Sales’ section.

The first of Trelawney's star-studded line-up to grace the sale ring will be Lot 27, a son of the mighty Zabeel. The colt is a classic example of his sire with the scope and length to develop into another of his spring three-year-old stars. He also has winning European Gr 1 form in his blood with his dam a half-sister by Soviet Star to Dubai World Cup contender Crowded House (Gr 1 Racing Post Trophy). The international flavour to the family is further strengthened by the presence of Gr 1 Hollywood Oaks winner Ticker Tape and successful Gr 1 producing stallion Postponed.

Lot 69 is by Australia's two-time champion sire Encosta de Lago out of the stakes-winning Zabeel mare National Treasure, a half-sister to the Gr 2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes winner Ferragamo. The colt is a shining example of the Zabeel-Encosta de Lago mix with the size, strength and presence to make waves in the ring.

The continued success of Fastnet Rock at the top level recently - Wanted (Newmarket Handicap) and Rock Classic (Australian Guineas) - will draw further attention to Lot 122. The daughter of the red-hot son of Danehill is a half-sister to the Gr 1 Victoria Derby winner and sire Amalfi. To match her rich pedigree, the filly combines size and strength with great muscle and balance.

Her dam is the Centaine mare Rationaine whose multiple winning daughter Rationalize is represented next-up by a cracking Flying Spur colt. His presence and athleticism is indicative of a 'running family' that claims Vigor (Gr 2 Makybe Diva Stakes), Joey Massino (Gr 2 Avondale Guineas), Wise Son (Gr 2 Greyville Gold Cup) and Listed winners Vincent Mangano, Wise Lass and Egoli Lass among its celebrated ranks.

Stallion sensation Redoute's Choice has claimed champion Australian sire honours on three occasions and his son, Lot 159, is a stunner. Out of the Strategic mare She Will Be Loved, the colt is a strong, mature individual with an early-performing look about him. His dam was top class and made $A2.2 million while carrying this colt. It is also the family of Gr 1 Hong Kong Sprint winner All Thrills Too and Gr 2 Royal Stakes winner and leading Gr 1 New Zealand Oaks contender Adaline.

Trelawney's Sydney consignment is completed on day two of the auction by a filly with outstanding classic credentials. She is by Encosta de Lago out of Trelawney's Queensland Oaks winner Vouvray, a daughter of Zabeel and the Gr 2 Dulcie Stakes winner Real Success.
The filly is a cracking individual who puts a tick in every box as far as type and pedigree is concerned.

Trelawney Horses to the Fore 24 Feb 2010
Trelawney Stud enjoyed an outstanding weekend on both sides of the Tasman with the promise of further Gr 1 glory to come in the autumn.

The Cambridge farm's 'Brand Of Success' was carried to victory on the home and away fronts with crack filly Zarzuela leading the charge.

She strengthened her New Zealand Derby claims while Ellerslie was also the scene of Boundless' stunning return to racing.

In Australia, La Rocket emerged as a genuine Australian Cup contender and Bolton stamped himself as a three-year-old to follow.

The best is yet to come from crack filly Zarzuela who continued her march toward upcoming feature race targets with victory in the Championship Stakes.

She again proved superior to her male challengers in the Gr 2 feature to confirm her favouritism for next month's Blue Riband Classic.

"There's further improvement to come from her out of Saturday and she'll be right on her game come Derby Day," Matamata trainer Mark Walker said.

Bred and raced by David Paykel, the daughter of Zabeel and Gr 1 Otaki-Maori WFA winner Star Satire was foaled and raised at Trelawney Stud.

Zarzuela has won four of her eight starts with victories in the Gr 2 Great Northern and Gr 3 Waikato Guineas preceding Saturday's Ellerslie triumph.

"She's come through the race very well and I'd love to get her to Sydney to show the Australians how good she is - I think she's a very, very good filly," Walker said.

The off-shore target he has in mind is the Gr 1 $A350,000 AJC Oaks at Royal Randwick on April 17.

"There's a month between the Derby and the Oaks and she showed when she won the Waikato Guineas she can perform off a decent break," Walker said.

Zarzuela also revealed another side to her game at Ellerslie by racing closer to the pace after coming from the tail-end to post previous successes.

"She raced handier than normal, but having said that barrier draws had dictated her getting back in her races," Walker said.

"She's progressed very well and all we want now is a good track for the Derby and she'll be right at her best."

Top-quality mare Boundless successfully returned from a 10-week break on Saturday to account for the open handicappers over 1600 metres.

Bred by Brent and Cherry Taylor, who has retained a racing share in the daughter of Van Nistelrooy, she will also be in action on Derby Day.

Boundless will run in the Nathan's Memorial on March 6 as a lead-in to the Gr 1 New Zealand Stakes a week later.

Meanwhile, Trelawney graduate La Rocket downed a host of Australian Cup contenders in the Gr 2 St George Stakes to press his claims for higher autumn honours.

The previous winner of five races, including the Listed Seymour Spring Classic, La Rocket was a $A300,000 yearling at the Sydney Easter Sale.

He was bred by major Trelawney client Deborah Ho and sold through the Cambridge farm's 2006 William Inglis draft.

La Rocket is out of the former top-quality Desert Sun mare La Bella Dama who was a seven-time winner for Ho.

Her career highlight was victory in the 2001 Gr 1 Mackinnon Stakes and she also won at Gr 2 level in the Eight Carat Classic and Royal Stakes and the Gr 3 Tesio Stakes and Waikato Guineas.

The regally-bred Bolton added performance to his illustrious pedigree after striking his first winning blow in Melbourne.

He finished second at his sprint debut earlier this month and appreciated the step up to a metric mile at Bendigo yesterday to coast home with authority.

Bolton was bought out of Trelawney's 2008 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale draft for $A425,000 by high-profile owner Lloyd Williams.

By Zabeel out of the Gr 2 Dulcie Stakes winner Real Success, he is a brother to the former crack galloper Vouvray.

She carried the Trelawney colours to victory in the Gr 1 Queensland Oaks and elite placings in the Ranvet, BMW, Mackinnon and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and the Caulfield Cup.

Vouvray's first foal is the Flying Spur colt Right Vintage, who made $A260,000 at Sydney last year and is a recent trial winner for Victorian trainer Rodney Douglas.

Trelawney's seven-strong draft to the upcoming Easter Sale will feature his outstanding half-sister by Encosta De Lago.

Another Outstanding Yearling Draft for 2010 19 Jan 2010
One of New Zealand’s leading vendors at yearling sales for the past decade, Trelawney Stud will present a draft of high quality yearlings at Karaka 2010 – a draft that will be among the most well inspected on the sale ground.

“Since taking over Trelawney in the early nineties we have set out to improve the quality of our broodmare band and in turn, the quality of our yearling draft each year,” said Brent Taylor of Trelawney Stud. “We’re firm believers in providing our young horses with the best possible care and attention in their early development and there’s no doubt that the most important time in a thoroughbred’s life is the first 18 months and the yearling preparation is a major part of that development,” said Brent.

Among the leading vendors at Karaka over the last decade, Trelawney Stud will offer a total of 42 yearlings at the sale, 23 in the Premier Sale and 19 in the Select. “We have achieved some solid results in the sale ring but most importantly, the results have come on the racetrack,” says Brent. “We have produced Group One winners each season for the past ten years – Wahid, Taatletail, Mr Celebrity, Vouvray, Boundless, Black Mamba, Red Ruler, Amalfi, Allez Wonder, The Duke, The Mighty Lions, Carnegie Express, Hill Of Grace – so if history repeats, there is at least one Group One winner among our 2010 draft,” he said.

2009/2010 has seen yet another Group One winner added to the Trelawney tally with the success of Allez Wonder (Aus) (Redoute’s Choice) in the Group One Toorak Handicap (1600m) whilst Red Ruler (NZ) (Viking Ruler) notched up a further Group One placing in the Zabeel Classic (2000m) before taking out the Group Two City of Auckland Cup (2400m). Other stakes performers bred, reared or sold by Trelawney Stud so far this season include Boundless (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy), winner of the Group Two Counties Cup (2100m) and the Group Three Nicolas Feullatte Stakes (2000m), Black Mamba (NZ) (Black Minnaloushe) who added a Group Two and two further listed wins to her tally of 15 stakes performances in the USA, Group Three winner in Australia Gondorf (NZ) (Montjeu), Listed winner Scarlet Vanhara (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) and stakes performers Ruud Van Slaats (NZ) (Van Nistelrooy) and Ahdashim (NZ) (Elusive City). Another to add to that impressive list is the pre-post favourite for the $2.2 million dollar New Zealand Derby and last start winner of the Group Two Great Northern Guineas (2100m) in Zarzuela (NZ) (Zabeel) who also carries the brand of success.

The bar is lifted each year at the yearling sales and Trelawney and their clients relish the challenge by offering a complete line up of yearlings where there is a horse to suit all tastes. “This year a third of our Premier draft are first foals from Group, Stakes or high class race mares,” says Brent. “That is a reflection of the investment we have made in the pursuit of producing racehorses of the highest calibre that will be at home in the best stables of Australasia,” he said.

Trelawney will offer yearlings out of no less than six Group One winners or producing mares with a further 14 yearlings out of Group or Stakes performer or producers. To balance that, the Trelawney draft offers buyers the opportunity to purchase yearlings by some of the best, proven sires available in Australia and New Zealand – a truly impressive line up.

Trelawney Stud’s 2010 yearling draft can be viewed on line by visiting the sales section of the Trelawney website – www.trelawneystud.co.nz For more information in regard to the yearlings or to book an on farm parade prior to the yearling sales, please feel free to contact Brent Taylor – 021 949 644.
