This stallion has a number of key features in his pedigree, notably a reinforcement of Northern Dancer through potent male and female ancestors in his third generation. Given that it probably is not desirable to have too much more Northern Dancer in the pedigree, his dual presence can nevertheless bring all the component parts of his pedigree twice over to any potential matings. By this I mean of the strong female line of Nearctic, for instance, the influence of Mahmoud twice over, and the influence of valuable ancestor Native Dancer, again twice over. If we add to this the riches of the pedigree of Halo, again descending through the direct female line of Northern Dancer and introducing a further strain of Mahmoud, we have concentrations that are really worth exploiting.
In addition, the pedigree of Halo contains influential ancestors Turn To and his sire, Royal Charger, along with Cosmic Bomb, whose sire, Pharamond, is a half-brother to Hyperion, and whose damline is also that of the very influential broodmare sire, Prince John.
Icing on the cake comes in the form of the direct female lines of Storm Bird, Secretariat, Turn To, Van Nistelrooy himself.
These potential affinities are listed below, 1-5, and we have tried to concentrate on those readily available that we believe will have the greatest influence. So, the stallions listed below are potential broodmare sires whose pedigrees will ensure a high degree of compatibility.
It would take forever to elaborate all the affinities present in combination with the stallions listed below. Rather I have attached a handful of examples that demonstrate the sort of affinities created in combination with the listed broodmare sires.
Sample 1 with Sir Tristram presents a goldmine of potent reinforcements, from Turn To, Somethingroyal, Princequillo, My Babu as a close relative of Turn To, Mahmoud and Pharamond. Sir Tristram himself descends through the direct female line of Hyperion prominently in the pedigree of Northern Dancer, and also that of Pharamond, the sire of Cosmic Bomb. An outstanding candidate.
Sample 2 with Arch Sculptor offers a variation on the Sir Tristram pedigree, with linebreedings to Turn To, Somethingroyal and Nasrullah, but also featuring a strain of Bull Dog whose line is so prominent further back in the pedigree of Van Nistelrooy. A quality broodmare sire, that appears highly compatible with Van Nistelrooy.
Sample 3 with Gay Mecene is a valuable broodmare sire who may or may not be available in Australasia, but who is certainly worth considering. Obvious features here include further strong reinforcement of the pedigree of Sir Gaylord with My Babu and Turn To prominent in good position. Nearco is also present in good position as a reinforcement of his own pedigree through Nearctic twice over in the pedigree of Van Nistelrooy.
Sample 4 with Imperial Prince to a large extent offers more of the same, being by Sir Ivor, but his pedigree also contains an instance of Bois Roussel close up, a half-brother to Bull Dog and Sir Gallahad so prominent in the pedigree of Van Nistelrooy.
Sample 5 with Gielgud is the subject of similar comments, except that Hyperion is also close up in his pedigree as a half-brother to Pharamond, while Discovery is influential in the pedigree of Northern Dancer twice over in the pedigree of Van Nistelrooy.
Some of the stallions listed below have not had a particularly inspiring career as stallions, but it is perhaps worth mentioning that many stallions that are not particularly successful in the role of a stallion, come into their own as broodmare sires (where the inefficient decision-making of breeders is less likely to interfere!) They have a better chance in this capacity for the strengths of their pedigrees to show through. So I don’t believe it too necessary to downgrade a potential broodmare sire on account of his limited success in the role of a stallion.
I have also included some stallions that may not even have begun their career as stallions, but which we already have in the database, on the basis that this study can last a number of years.
It is important to remember that the recommended broodmare sires and bloodlines are just a starting point and it does not hold that every broodmare by the various broodmare sires listed will automatically be a good mating for Van Nistelrooy.
The bottom half of each mare’s pedigree will have an impact on the overall suitability of any particular mare.
For example, a Sir Tristram mare whose bottom half has no affinity with Van Nistelrooy would not be as suitable as a Sir Tristram mare whose bottom half does complement the stallion’s pedigree.
Further, affinities identified could appear in the bottom half of any mare’s pedigree and be just as effective. For example, if Sir Ivor, Sir Gaylord and Somethingroyal are major contributors to Sir Tristram being a suitable broodmare sire, then Sir Ivor, Sir Gaylord or Somethingroyal appearing in the bottom half of a mare’s pedigree in the same generation would be just as influential as she is in the position they appear in Sir Tristram’s pedigree.
If you wish to double-check any particular mare’s pedigree with how its overall pedigree suits Van Nistelrooy, then that mare’s pedigree can be specifically analysed with Van Nistelrooy by Brain.
In the case of Van Nistelrooy Patrick Brain has also produced a supplementary list of potential broodmare sires which are more likely to be found in New Zealand.
Please now find below the main broodmare sires associated with the affinities mentioned above.
HULA TOWN - Brings the attributes of his grandsire Sir Tristram, albeit one generation further back. However Hula Town’s female family provides a strong affinity between Turn To and Klairon plus an additional strain of Nasrullah through Never Bend once more.
INDIAN ORE - Indian Ore’s pedigree reinforces Native Dancer, Nasrullah (and his female line), Hyperion (and his female line), Discovery and Bull Dog, all influential ancestors prominent in Van Nistelrooy’s pedigree.
KAAPSTAD - Once again Sir Tristram is one generation further back than ideal however Kaapstad has the significant benefit of descending through Nasrullah’s direct female line (which is so prominent in Van Nistelrooy’s pedigree) via Tessa Gillian, who is a full sister to Royal Charger. Further, Kaapstad’s second dam is by Klairon, who has such a strong affinity with Turn To in Van Nistelrooy’s pedigree.
KINGDOM BAY - Kingdom Bay provides an additional strain of Nasrullah through the affinity between Bold Ruler and Rocky Thumb, as well of several strains of Hyperion to reinforce those already in Van Nistelrooy’s pedigree.
PRINCE FERDINAND - Tudor Minstrel, Grey Sovereign and Pherozshah in Buisson Ardent’s pedigree complement the multiple strains of Nasrullah’s female line in Van Nistelrooy’s pedigree.
SPECTACULAR LOVE - Spectacular Love complements Van Nistelrooy’s pedigree well. Fourth generation line-breeding to Bold Ruler, plus Royal Charger, also in the fourth generation provide further reinforcement of Nasrullah’s female line with influential ancestors Princequillo, Bull Dog and Mahmoud reinforced further back in the pedigree.
STRAUSSBROOK - Straussbrook provides another strain of Nasrullah which is part of a greater affinity between Turn To and Nantallah. This is supported by another affinity between Bold Ruler and Coogee.
