Te Motu Vineyard
Te Motu Vineyard was established by the Dunleavy family in 1989 on Waiheke Island, in the heart of Auckland's Hauraki Gulf. The goal to produce high quality red wine has been achieved with the flagship Te Motu Cabernet/Merlot being awarded multiple international gold medals (1994 and 1996). Since 1995, a second label is also available under the Dunleavy brand.
'The Shed' restaurant opened in early 2003. The Shed provide visitors to Te Motu leisurely dining outdoors or under The Shed's cool verandas, with a selection of red and white wines and methode sparklings. Download Brochure (pdf)
The Te Motu Vineyard lies in the heart of the Onetangi Valley, sheltered from the north by the ridge which guards Onetangi's famous beach, and from the west by the massive rocky outcrop known as Stonyridge. One of its boundaries is formed by the Rangihoua creek which flows into an inlet of Putiki Bay named Te Rangihoua ('day of renewal') by Tamatekapua, captain of the Maori canoe Te Arawa, because it was his first landfall in the long voyage from Hawaiiki. There, Te Arawa was re-lashed before continuing on to its final landing place at Maketu.
The vineyard's name comes from the original Maori name for Waiheke, Te Motu-Arai-Roa ('island of long shelter'). The soil of Onetangi Valley is based on the Jurassic-age Waipapa Group. The original rock fabric has been largely converted to clay minerals. Experience has shown that the Onetangi soils and micro-climate are some of the best anywhere in the world for the red Cabernets and Merlot grape varieties.
Te Motu and Dunleavy wines are wholly grown by sustainable viticulture, hand-picked, fermented and barrel-aged on the vineyard estate.
Te Motu Vineyard offers cellar door wine sales and tastings in its picturesque setting, and, from Boxing Day 2002, casual lunches. The new facility will also be available for private functions and weddings. |
