Peninsula Estate Wines
Peninsula Estates philosophy is simple. To make world class, premium red wine. Wine that can be cellared confidently for many years, wine to be enjoyed with good food. We believe that great wine is made in the vineyard with careful canopy management and an eye to detail. Our wines are truly handcrafted. Situated high on a northern point of Waiheke which juts out into the Hauraki Gulf, Peninsula Estate is one of the most picturesque vineyards in New Zealand. To the east are the sands of Oneroa Bay, to the North Rakino Island, and to the west, Auckland city lies hazy in the distance, some 35km away.
Waiheke Island enjoys a warm, dry ripening season, and the combination of the maritime influence on the climate and good drainage has helped produce the wines that give the Island an international reputation for Cabernet. Peninsula Estate believe that Syrah is another variety that has a big future on the island.
The original 6.5 acre vineyard was planted in 1986/87 with the first vintage in 1989. These origanal plantings of Cabernets Sauvignon and Franc, Merlot and Malbec have since been expanded to 10 acres in total, with further Cabernet Sav, Merlot and Syrah. |
