Owners - Nelson Schick & Sue Schick
Windsor Park Stud (click for area map), is located a few minutes drive from the township of Cambridge, New Zealand, in the heart of some of the best thoroughbred breeding country in the world.
The famed Waikato region of New Zealand provides a year round environment that has enabled Windsor Park Stud to successfully breed and raise great thoroughbred racehorses for more than 25 years.
Windsor Park Studwas initially established in the early 1960s by Ian and Jessie Duncan. Nelson and Sue Schick took over ownership of Windsor Park in 1971. In 1979 they re-located to their current Kaipaki Rd, Cambridge, property which had previously been a dairy farm. They brought with them their leading sire Silver Dream who became the foundation sire on their new stud farm.
Major expansion has seen the purchase of neighbouring farms so that the main Kaipaki Rd farm of Windsor Park now totals over 450 acres.
With the purchase of the 300 acre Halidon Hill farm just north of Cambridge in 1993 and the inclusion of Mapperley Stud in Matamata in 1998, the current Windsor Park operation encompasses more than 1200 acres of prime farm land on three separate properties.
Today Windsor Park has a reputation for standing successful stallions and breeding top-class racehorses and is acknowledged as one of Australasia's leading thoroughbred nurseries. Windsor Park bred or raised racehorses have played an important role in the international success of the New Zealand thoroughbred in the important markets of Australia, Asia and South Africa.
Nelson and Sue Schick owners of Windsor Park have been joined in the management of the stud by son Rodney.
Farms - Windsor Park (Cambridge) & Mapperley (Matamata)
Windsor Park Stud provides excellent all-year round facilities for its horses with a carefully worked out farm management programme which ensures maximum pasture utilisation.
A major advantage for Windsor Park is that it has three properties at its disposal. Each property is prime farmland with varying contours ideal for raising and developing thoroughbreds.
Located on the main Windsor Park farm at Kaipaki Rd, Cambridge, are the stud's office, stallions, facilities for foaling and safe, quiet paddocks for mares, foals and yearlings.
The breaking-in and pre-training facility along with the yearling division is located on the adjacent farm down Thirwall Lane, a two-minute drive from the office.
The main property is rested during the autumn and winter months, which gives it time to freshen before the onset of the next breeding season.
Halidon Hill is a nearby property which we utilise for spelling racehorses, wintering in-foal mares, growing out yearlings and for broodmares and foals over the later months of the breeding season.
The Mapperley Stud property in Matamata is used for dry mares, yearling preparation and broodmares and foals. This property has a long history of producing high quality racehorses and is utilised for the maturing of racing stock owned by Windsor Park and their clientele.
Windsor Park currently has a roster of eight stallions which includes five champion sires. As well, the stud has a proven record of producing elite Group One winners on the race-tracks of New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong and South Africa. In 1990/91 Star Way won the prestigious Dewar Stallion Award for champion N.Z. based Australasian Sire. In the 2001 season Volksraad won the coveted Grosvenor Award for N.Z.'s Champion Sire. In 1998 and 2001 Windsor Park Stud was honoured for its achievements by the New Zealand thoroughbred industry when recieving the prestigious New Zealand Breeder Of The Year award.
However Windsor Park is not just about top class stallions. We strive to support our clients with expert thoroughbred advice, animal husbandry and high quality staff who care for our client’s thoroughbred investments.
At the heart of this success is a philosophy that has always put the horse first. At every level of Windsor Park's operation, from the careful consideration of each mating to the care of the stallions, mares and foals, everything possible is done to enhance the quality of each horse's life so they may reach their full potential.
It is a record and philosophy that we, and our clients, are proud of.
