About Woodbine Farm

The Cox Plate winner – The Phantom Chance (1989 Noble Bijou – The Fantasy) – PC to his friends - is retired to Woodbine Farm. He has just turned 22 and is in good health.

The Phantom Chance is pictured above winning the 1993 Cox Plate, and in later life being ridden by Chris Luoni.

The Chianti Stallion Partnership is very proud to be the inductee sponsor of the first announced inductee into the New Zealand Racing Hall of Fame - Carbine www.racinghalloffame.co.nz
The inaugural induction event was held in Auckland on Friday 3rd March 2006.

Chris Luoni is the owner of a small horse breeding property of 25 acres at Matangi near Hamilton. This property operates under the name “Woodbine Farm” and has been breeding horses on a small scale since 1988.

In 2004 Woodbine Farm and partners imported the Danehill stallion Chianti (1998 Danehill – Sabbah). Chianti is standing at Ashford Park near Otaki.

In 2005 Woodbine farm and partner imported the former Trelawney Stud stallion Dance Floor (1989 Star De Naskra – Dance Troupe) back to New Zealand from California. Dance Floor sadly died last year.

In 2007 Woodbine Farm imported the quality dual Australian Group winning 2 year old - Danger Looms who is also standing at Ashford Park, Otaki.

We are principally breeders and we believe that racing is the exam for breeding. To date we have bred three stakeswinners (including two Dance Floor foals that we raced). We have enjoyed success in Asia and we have bred multiple winners in Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau and Malaysia.

Chris and his father, George Luoni, have been involved with horses since the 1950’s and have enjoyed success with horses such as:

  • HAPPY UNION (winner of 4 Group I races – including two Avondale Cups in the 1970s),

  • BALRANI (Ellerslie Group II winner of 7 races in the 1980s),

  • Suncatcher (Group placed winner of 12 races in the 1980s and 1990s),
    and more recently –

  • the home-bred stakewinners MA DANSEUSE- 10 wins (Dance Floor ex Double Sandbags) and OLIVERDANCE - 12 wins (Dance Floor ex Lillibet).
